Candidate visits for Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dec 6-9, at UHD.

Yvonne Kendall, associate professor of music, will direct the Houston Flute Choir in a live broadcast on TV Channel-55 at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 5.

Information Technology plans to install a new backup system for the Exchange e-mail system so.access to Exchange/Outlook e-mail as well as Xpressions voice messages will be unavailable intermittently between 9 a.m. and noon Sunday, Dec. 5.

Registration continues for UHD's first online Winter Term which runs from Dec. 27, 2010, to Jan. 14, 2011.

Committee announces candidates for Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs position

UHD will host four candidates for Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs next week.  Candidates will each be on campus for one day of interviews, conversations and tours. 

  An open forum for faculty, staff and students will be held from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. with each respective candidate on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the Academic Building, Room 405. Search Committee Chair Don Bates said he hopes members of the campus community will come out and meet the candidates.

Monday, Dec. 6, Manuel Avalos, Ph.D., Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Support and Development, Division of Academic Affairs, University of North Carolina, Wilmington;

Tuesday, Dec. 7, Ben Latigo, Ph.D., Dean and Professor, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, University of the District of Columbia;

Wednesday, Dec. 8, Brian Chapman, Ph.D., Professor of Biology and Marine Biology, University of North Carolina, Wilmington; and

Thursday, Dec. 9, John Ronnau, Ph.D., Director and Professor, School of Social work, College of Health and Public Affairs, University of Central Florida.

Exchange/Outlook email planned downtown for Sunday, Dec. 5

Information Technology is planning to install a new backup system for the Exchange e-mail system on Sunday, Dec. 5.


During the installation period, access to Exchange/Outlook e-mail as well as Xpressions voice messages will be unavailable intermittently between 9 a.m. and noon Sunday, Dec. 5.


Please plan accordingly to arrange for access to important e-mail messages that you may need during the three hours of planned intermittent downtime on Sunday, Dec. 5.

Kendall directs Houston Flute Choir on Channel 55 Sunday at First Methodist

Yvonne Kendall, associate professor of music, will direct the Houston Flute Choir in a live broadcast on TV Channel-55 at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, at First United Methodist Church, Clay at Main Street. 

The group will also perform at the 8:45 a.m. service. By watching the streaming video ( you can also see the prelude, which will feature the Houston Flute Choir and First Methodist handbell choir in an arrangement of the Coventry Carol. For more on the Flute Choir, see

Last year's Best of Show was the College of Public Service.

Staff Council sponsors holiday Office Decorating Contest; entries due Dec. 17

The Staff Council is sponsoring an Office Decorating Contest with multiple categories and the deadline to enter is Dec. 17.

Departments can enter for the office decorations or their door decorations, but not both. Office decorations will be judged on the categories of most creative, most traditional, most humorous, best door and best theme.

-          Contact name and extension,

-          Department and room number and

-          Door or office decoration theme

Judging will be held throughout the day Monday, Dec. 20, and the winners will be announced Tuesday, Dec. 21. A flyer is available here.

Holiday Open House set for

Dec. 9, in Special Events Center


 UHD's Staff Council will host the Holiday Open House from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in the Special Events Center in the Academic Building.  Refreshments will be served.

Fall 2010 Fact Sheet is now available

A new report is available on the Office of Institutional Research's website reflecting information for the fall semester.


The Fall 2010 Certified Fact Sheet is available here:  It includes information on UHD students broken down by ethnicity, gender, student type, classification and majors. It also includes information on the breakdown of semester credit hours students are taking this semester.

Urban Education MAT Program presents Graduate Project Exhibition Dec. 6

The UHD Department of Urban Education Master of Arts in Teaching Program will hold a Graduate Project Exhibition from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, in room C-100, Commerce Street Building.


Graduate students will present poster sessions on capstone projects in grant writing, position papers, curriculum revision and research studies.

Student Initiated Project production features comedy in English and Spanish

UHD senior, Emil Niz, will present his Student Initiated Project production of the play, "La Señora Martín", at 8 p.m. today and Saturday in the O'Kane Theatre, room N-364, One Main Building.

Enjoy an evening of laughter with high school student, Martina, in the world of James Day High School and see if her teacher, Mrs. Martín, will succeed in forcing her to "never speak in Spanish again!" The play contains dialogue in Spanish and English and requires no reservations. The seating is open and first come - first seated. Admission is free.

Arts and Humanities Dept. sponsors holiday music, cookies Dec. 6 and 7

Harpist Laura Smith and the Chancel Bells Quartet of Houston's First Presbyterian Church will perform holiday music from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dec. 6 and 7, near the large Christmas tree on the third floor, Academic Building. 

Free cookies will be available. The Arts and Humanities Department sponsors the annual event. For information, contact Carrie Allen, assistant professor of music, at 713-226-5550.

NotTooLatteeOffice of Admission hosts 'It's Not too Latte" on Saturday, Dec. 11

UHD's Office of Admissions is hosting the "It's Not too Latte" event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 11, so potential students can apply for admission and receive admission assistance on campus.

To be admitted on the spot, a potential student should bring a check or money order for the $35 application fee and a copy of his or her official transcripts.

UHD will hold its first online Winter Term from Dec. 27, 2010, to Jan. 14, 2011.

Currently enrolled UHD students will be able to take one course during the session, and registration for Winter Term will open today.

The eNews is a University faculty and staff newsletter and is designed to keep employees informed of university activities, policy changes, human resources issues, business office information and security information.

The deadline for submitting items is 9 a.m. the day before publication. Past issues are archived on UHD's website. The archive link is in the lower right column.
