Colloquium focuses on modeling of genomic regulatory networks Dec. 3
The Computer and Mathematical Sciences Department Colloquium will feature Ivan Ivanov of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University who will discuss "Compression and Control of Boolean Models of Genomic Regulatory Networks" at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, in room A-623, Academic Building.
Abstract
"Computational modeling of genomic regulatory networks holds the promise to provide better understanding, predicting, and influencing the long-term behavior of these systems. Owing to the inherent computational complexity of the optimal control methods, it is often infeasible to design control policies for large networks. Thus, strategies for complexity reduction become a key requirement in this process. Removing genes from the model and interpreting them as latent variables imposes constraints on the dynamics of the reduced network.
We use the Boolean network (BN) model to develop the general framework for selection and reduction of the model's complexity via designating some of the model's variables as latent ones. This framework is based on a 'collapsing' heuristic and utilizes the concept of a selection policy. We discuss the effects of selection policies on the steady-state distribution and on stationary control, in particular, the Mean-First-Passage-Time (MFPT) control policy. Because every binary probabilistic Boolean network (PBN) is a collection of Boolean networks with perturbation, we treat selection policies within the framework of Boolean networks with perturbation. After establishing how difficult is to find the optimal selection policy and its corresponding reduction mapping, we present a novel compression algorithm for Boolean networks with perturbation that not only facilitates the control of model, but also provides the framework for synthetic study of biological properties via simulation of network dynamics.
The Coefficient of Determination (CoD) approach is used to decide which gene is the best candidate for removal from the network. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by its effects on the steady-state distribution and on the stationary control for the network, in particular, MFPT control policy."

UHD's MS150 Cycling Team sponsors jersey design contest for this year's ride
UHD's MS150 Cycling Team is sponsoring a jersey design contest in preparation for this year's MS150 ride in the spring.
Information, rules and regulations are included in the linked document. All submissions should go to Lea Campbell at campbellc@uhd.edu.
The cycling team encourages individuals interested in riding in this unique event to get their registration in quickly.
Event organizers register participants until the 13,000 rider limit is reached. Initial registrants filled 80 percent of the openings. Team UHD members say registration will likely pick up again and if interested UHD riders do not sign up soon, it may be too late.
The Team UHD roster is at 16 members and they look forward to an increase before the end of the year. Please spread the word to students, staff, faculty and alumni.
For more information about the team, contact Jose Cantu at CantuJ@uhd.edu or Lorenzo Morales at MoralesL@uhd.edu.

The Skyline eNews is produced Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the school year by the Office of Public Affairs, and
you will receive the Skyline eNews via email while you are a UHD
employee. We update our email list weekly. The eNews is a University faculty and staff newsletter and is designed to keep employees informed of university activities, policy changes, human resources issues, business office information and security information.
The deadline for submitting items is 9 a.m. the day before publication. Past issues are archived on UHD's website. The archive link is in the lower right column.
We are always interested in your activities. Let us know at least 24 hours in advance so we can include your event in the Skyline eNews. We also try to photograph University activities, but we need to know when and where your event is taking place. Email skylinenews@uhd.edu or call Public Affairs at 713-221-8010. |
