| Powerlifting team plans trip to world championship in Las Vegas
Twenty members of UHD Club Powerlifting Team are going to the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters (WABDL) World Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday, Nov. 19.
The powerlifting team, still undefeated in collegiate powerlifting, is looking to improve on their 8th place finish at WABDL Worlds in 2009. Coach and Assistant Professor John Hudson said he is confident UHD can place much higher this year, particularly with the new freshmen talent in the lineup. In fact, Hudson said he thinks UHD has a good shot at first place if UHD lifters perform up to their potential. A win by UHD Powerlifting would mark the first team championship at WABDL Worlds by a collegiate team.
Several UHD lifters will be taking shots at new World Records. Linda Okoro, already the Junior and Open World Record Holder in the deadlift at in the 165-pound weight class, will attempt to break the Junior World Record in the 148-pound class, which has stood at 462.7 pounds for the last 12 years. Okoro also has her sights set on being the first woman in WABDL history to pull a 500 pound deadlift at 148. Freshman Sasha Martinez will attemmpt to break the women's heavyweight deadlift record for the Teen 18-19 Division, which is currently 435.2 pounds and has stood for eight years.
