Eleftherios Gkioulekas, assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Texas-Pan American, will discuss "The Effect of Asymmetric Ekman Damping on Energy and Enstrophy Injection in Two-Layer Quasi-Geostrophic Turbulence" at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in room A-628 in the Academic Building.
UHD's online eservices portal will get new name on Nov. 22

OnlineUHD's online portal to eservices, UOnline, will become MyUHD on Nov. 22.

During the next few weeks, individuals across campus will be working to make the switch on web pages across the university.

Laramie
Tickets on sale for University Theatre's staging of drama 'The Laramie Project'

The University Theatre will present its fall production of The Laramie Project beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in the O'Kane Theatre, third floor, One Main Building, and tickets are on sale starting today.

Written by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre Project, this powerful stage piece is based on the 1998 kidnapping, torture and death of University of Wyoming student, Matthew Shepard, and seems most timely today with all the current news events dealing with hate crimes and sexual discrimination, said Thomas Lyttle, professor of Arts and Humanities. The thirteen students appearing in the show find the script to be emotionally involving and intellectually stimulating and hope their work touches their audiences spiritually and intellectually, he said.

Additional performances will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 30 and Nov. 4, 5 and 6; 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31; and at 1:30 p.m. for special student performances on Wednesday, Nov. 3 and Friday, Nov. 5.

Tickets are $3 and can be purchased at the University Cashier's Office on the third floor beginning today. Any unsold tickets will be available at the theater door 30 minutes before each performance.  Seating is open.

Guest lecturer discusses energy and enstrophy problem Friday

Eleftherios Gkioulekas, assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Texas-Pan American, will discuss "The Effect of Asymmetric Ekman Damping on Energy and Enstrophy Injection in Two-Layer Quasi-Geostrophic Turbulence" at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, in room A-628 in the Academic Building.

For more information onf Gkioulekas visit the website, http://www.math.utpa.edu/lf/. The presentation abstract follows:

"In the Nastrom-Gage spectrum of atmospheric turbulence we observe a  k-3 energy spectrum that transitions into a  k-5/3 spectrum with increasing wavenumber k. The transition occurs near a transition wavenumber kt located near the Rossby deformation wavenumber kR.

The Tung-Orlando theory interprets this spectrum as a double downscale cascade of potential enstrophy and energy, from large scales to small scales. We show that in a temperature forced two-layer quasi-geostrophic model, the rates with which potential enstrophy and energy are injected places the transition wavenumber kt near kR, as long as most potential enstrophy and energy cascade to small scales. We also show that, contrary to what occurs in two-dimensional turbulence, the effect of asymmetric Ekman damping is to intensify the energy flux in the subleading downscale energy cascade and it may increase or decrease the flux of the downscale potential enstrophy cascade depending on the distribution of energy between kinetic and potential energy for the forcing range wavenumbers.

Using a random gaussian forcing model we also show that suppressing the bottom layer forcing term decreases the ratio η / ε of injected potential enstrophy over injected energy thereby tending to decrease kt further. Based on these results we argue that the Tung-Orlando theory can account for the approximate coincidence between kt and kR."

Sports and Fitness announces weigh-in for holiday weight-loss program

Sports and Fitness is sponsoring a program, Maintain Don't Gain, to help participants avoid gaining weight during the holiday season starting with weigh-ins Monday on the third floor of the Student Life Center.

The average American gains 7 to 10 pounds during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. One way to avoid the gain is to be more accountable to yourself and the scale during these times. Sign up with Sports and Fitness for weekly weigh-ins and weekly email tips on avoiding holiday weight gain.

Five simple tips that can help you avoid a weight gain:

·   Drink lots of water

·   Increase your exercise a little bit each day

·   Cut back where you can at non-holiday meals

·   Eat what you like - but

only a few bites

·   Don't eat after 7p.m.

Weigh-ins will continue through Jan. 7. Participants who do not gain weight during this time will receive a T-shirt and water bottle. Interested participants can register by visiting www.uhd.edu/sports&fitness. A flyer is available here.
