Ang Lee Film series begins today in Cullen Robertson Auditorium


The UHD Cultural Enrichment Center and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston are co-sponsoring the Ang Lee Film Series this week in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium, third floor, Academic Building.


The series begins today with a reception at 5:15 p.m. followed at 5:30 p.m. with a showing of the film "Pushing Hands," and at 7:15 p.m. by a tai chi demonstration.

 
 

The film "The Wedding Banquet" will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20.


The film, "Eat, Drink, Man, Woman," will be shown at 5:30 p.m. followed at 7:30 p.m. by a closing reception in Room A-300, third floor, Academic Building and at 7:45 by a scholarly roundtable, Ang Lee Now, and a question and answer session with Chuck Jackson, assistant professor; Edmund Cueva, Arts and Humanities Department Chair; William Nowak, associate professor, and Johanna Schmertz, associate professor.

Student Activities needs donated cakes to support its fund raising at fall festival


The Office of Students Activities and Events is seeking donated cakes for its Cake Walk during the annual Fall Family Festival noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23.


The festival will include a kids costume parade, raffles, hot dog eating contest, arts and crafts show, Houston Rockets inflatables, games, music and more. A flyer is available here. For people who would like to donate a cake, but who cannot attend the festival, SAE will collect the cakes on Friday, Oct. 22.

Campus Sustainability Day features movies and presentations Wednesday


In recognition of Campus Sustainability Day, the sustainability committee will show two movies on Wednesday, Oct. 20, and students in the BIOL 2306 "Fundamentals of Nutrition" class will present posters, displays and demonstrations.

 

Campus Sustainability Day is an annual celebration of sustainability in higher education. On Wednesday, colleges and universities throughout the country will sponsor events to encourage students, faculty, and staff to promote sustainability principles at school, at home, on the job and in the community.

 

The first movie, "Super Size Me," will be shown at 10 a.m. in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium, third floor, Academic Building.This film examines the influence of the fast food industry. Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock personally explores the consequences on his health of eating nothing but McDonald's Restaurant food for one month.

 

The second movie, "Killer at Large," will be shown at 11:30 a.m. in the Cullen Robertson Auditorium, third floor, Academic Building. This documentary takes a broad look at many causes of obesity including our toxic food environment, the problems with school lunches and vending machines and the impact food lobbyists have on determining government policies.

 

Additional displays will be available from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the hallway outside the Special Events Center, Room 300-A, third floor, Academic Building.

Natural Sciences T.E.A.C.H. session scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 20


The Department of Natural Sciences is hosting the second T.E.A.C.H. lunch  from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, in room N612 on the topic of  "How Do You Combine Student Engagement with Student Learning Outcomes", moderated by Jerry Johnson, assistant professor of Natural Sciences, and Rachna Sadana, assistant professor of Natural Sciences.


The T.E.A.C.H. lunches (Trading Education And Classroom Hints) is a program designed to promote faculty engagement and cooperation in improving pedagogy and teaching effectiveness for the benefit of UHD students. At these lunches, interested faculty hold discussions concerning, but not limited to: encouraging student participation in class, problem-based and inquiry-based learning strategies, effective exam design, use of technology in the classroom, SACS assessment, and the challenges and rewards of teaching to a diverse student population. A total of three lunch programs are planned.

College of Humanities and Social Sciences hosts information session


The College of Humanities and Social Sciences Advising Center will host a "Declare your Major" information session from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, in the Advising Center.


A brief session will be held in N-1099 from 12-12:30 p.m. informing students of the benefits of declaring their majors early. Advisors will be on hand to do on-site declarations for qualified students. Please see flyer for additional information.

Sports and Fitness announces weigh-in for holiday weight-loss program


Sports and Fitness is sponsoring a program, Maintain Don't Gain, to help participants avoid gaining weight during the holiday season starting with weigh-ins Oct. 25 on the third floor of the Student Life Center.

 

The average American gains 7 to 10 pounds during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. One way to avoid the gain is to be more accountable to yourself and the scale during these times. Sign up with Sports and Fitness for weekly weigh-ins and weekly email tips on avoiding holiday weight gain.

 

Five simple tips that can help you avoid a weight gain:

ˇ   Drink lots of water

ˇ   Increase your exercise a little bit each day

ˇ   Cut back where you can at non-holiday meals

ˇ   Eat what you like - but

only a few bites

ˇ   Don't eat after 7p.m.

 

Weigh-ins will continue through Jan. 7. Participants who do not gain weight during this time will receive a T-shirt and water bottle. Interested participants can register by visiting www.uhd.edu/sports&fitness. A flyer is available here.

National Save for Retirement Week courses help people prepare to retire


In recognition of "National Save for Retirement Week", whose goal is to increase personal financial literacy and to raise public awareness of the retirement-savings vehicles available to all workers, onevaluable and timely training will be offered to UHD faculty and staff.


Retirement Strategies for Life, Course Code: UHD070, Session #: 0001, will be offered from noon - 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, White Oak Room, Academic Building.


A VALIC representative will discuss the challenges faced in retirement including managing retirement income, Medicare, Social Security, long term care, and the effects of inflation on retirement savings. A free lunch will be provided by VALIC on a first come, first serve basis to those who register in advance.

Order Winter Commencement regalia by Nov. 24 to avoid late or rush fees


The December 2010 Commencement ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 19, and the UHD Bookstore wants everyone to be ready. 


For those who plan to participate in the graduation ceremony, it is important to order regalia no later than Nov. 24.  After Nov. 24, an additional $10 fee will be added to your order for rush shipping.


Orders placed prior to Nov. 24 should arrive the week of Dec. 8 and you will be contacted to pick up your regalia.


For any orders placed after Dec. 1 , there will be no guarantee regalia items will arrive prior to the day of Commencements.


The UHD Bookstore requires pre-payment  for all orders and accepts cash, all major credit cards (with a valid identification), or a charge to your department via PCard or purchase voucher with prior approval from your department.

Texas Renaissance Festival discount tickets available to UHD employees

The "Texas Renaissance Festival" festival is being held 9 a.m. to dusk though Nov. 28, Saturdays and Sundays only (with the exception of the Friday after Thanksgiving), .


Employees may purchase tickets at the 'Group Ticket' rate. The discounted rates are $15 for adults and $6 for children (5 yrs - 12 yrs). The ticket handling fee of $1 per ticket will be waived. To receive the 'Group Ticket' rate, you must use our discount code UHS-1488 and must purchase tickets in advance via credit card by phone or fax.

Fall Open House Destination Downtown set for Saturday, Oct. 23

UHD's fall open house Destination Downtown will be from 9 am. to noon Saturday, Oct. 23, starting in the One Main Building.

The open house will feature campus tours, opportunities to meet faculty and staff members, previews of UHD's five colleges and 44 degree programs, financial aid information and information on student organizations. There also will be prizes and giveaways.

ESO announces ESO Cafe blog

Employment Services and Operations announces the ESO Café, UHD's first employment related blog. 

Through this interactive tool, employees will be able to read and comment on articles relevant to the UHD community, professional/personal wellbeing, new employee introductions, important announcements and upcoming events - all geared towards enhancing your quality of life at work. The ESO staff is excited to provide this opportunity and encourages everyone to access ESO Café and sign-up for automatic email notifications. To access the blog, click on ESO Café, or navigate to esocafe.wordpress.com.

New subscribers will automatically be entered into a weekly drawing for a free combo meal at the UHD Food Court, complements of Aramark*.

Dependents now eligible for benefits coverage up to age 26

The Federal Health Care Reform bill includes a provision that extends benefits coverage to dependent children up to age 26.

This provision goes into effect in the first plan year after Sept. 23, 2010. Because the Texas Employees Group Benefits Program (GBP) plan year begins with the State's fiscal year on Sept. 1, coverage for dependents to age 26 will not begin until Plan Year 2011.

For now, dependent children are eligible in the GBP until they turn 25 years old, as long as they are not married. They do not have to be students.

If you have a dependent child who is turning 25, Employee Retirement System (ERS) automatically drops the child from coverage at the end of the month he or she turns 25. ERS sends you a letter about six weeks before the coverage ends. The letter includes a COBRA Election form. If your dependent wants to continue coverage under COBRA (the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985), he or she must mail the completed form with the correct premium payment to ERS by the due date stated in the letter.

Fall Family Festival includes food, crafts, games, contests and music Oct. 23


The fifth annual Fall Family Festival will be noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at several UHD venues featuring a day of fun activities including games, rides, a craft show, food, contests, and more for UHD students, faculty, staff, alumni and their families.


The Office of Student Activities hosts the event that has grown to become one of UHD's biggest on-campus traditions. Activities will take place on the North and South Decks, the Main Portico, the UHD Coffeehouse area and Special Events Room. Special attractions include a kids' costume parade and hot dog eating contest.


Food from local area vendors such as My Fit Foods, Domino's Pizza, Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and Cielo offer a great variety of choices for children to adults. The Houston Rockets, General Mills and Downtown Aquarium Restaurant will also have booths.

UHD is moving to an online assessment records management system

The University of Houston - Downtown is moving to an online assessment records management system called Assessment Information Management (AIM). 

This online system allows UHD faculty and administrators to post, update, archive, share and review assessment documents. All UHD faculty and academic administrators have accounts for their affiliated academic programs.Beginning with the 2009/10 program assessment reports (due to the Office of Academic Assessment on Nov. 1, 2010) all assessment reports, plans and data will be archived in the AIM system. Faculty are strongly encouraged to review the assessment data for their discipline.

Please bookmark the following and use it to access the site:  https://aim.uhd.edu/AIM/AIMAssessmentPlanOutcomes.uix Once you reach the login page, you will access the site by entering your e-mail username and password. The original URL for AIM () will be disabled late this week and should be removed as a bookmark. Please note that none of the data entered under the old RAT URL will be lost as we migrate to the permanent URL.

Veterans Services Office sponsors information fair Saturday, Oct. 23

UHD's Veterans Services Office is sponsoring a Veterans Information Fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, in the Special Events Room, A-300, in the Academic Building.

Representatives from difference agencies will be on hand to answer questions about benefits and services. For more information, contact Michael Records, UHD's manager of Veterans Services.

Management Development Program Legal Compliance Update Fall 2010


There have been significant changes in the legal/compliance landscape over the previous two years.  UHD managers must have a firm grasp of the do's and don'ts surrounding the various legal landmines that may come their way.  As a result, the Management Development Program (MDP) has added a Legal Compliance Update to provide managers the information they need to make good business decisions. 


The MDP Legal Compliance Update will be divided into two 3-hour sessions.  The first session will include the following topics: Genetic Information Non-discrimination Act (GINA), Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), new employee onboarding, and successful recruitment and selection techniques.


The second session will include the following topics: Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), employee recognition, and UHD policy updates (sexual harassment, Title IX, non-retaliation, and discipline & dismissal).


Both 3-hour sessions are mandatory for all UHD managers.  Due to scheduling challenges, managers will be assigned a session time and date.  If anyone needs to reschedule to a different time/date, please contact Doug teDuits at teduitsd@uhd.edu to arrange a more convenient time/date.
