Two UHD Powerlifters, coach receive Top Twenty rankings in sport
Two members of UHD's Club Powerlifting Team, Jesus Sanchez and Linda Okoro, received the
prestigious "Top Twenty" ranking for 2009 in the June issue of
Powerlifting USA magazine. UHD Powerlifting Head Coach and Assistant Professor of English John
Hudson also received The Top Twenty ranking in his weight category. Powerlifting USA releases The Top Twenty rankings in its
June issue each year for each weight category for the following groups: Teenagers,
Women, and Masters (male lifters over the age of 40). The rankings
include all lifts in 2009 in the sport of powerlifting from every
federation and include drug-tested and non-drug-tested lifts. UHD Powerlifting
competes in only drug-tested events. Sanchez is ranked #4 for bench press in the 114 weight class
with his 215 lb. effort performed at the WABDL World Championships in Reno,
Nevada last November. Jesus recently benched 253 to tie the Teen
18-19 World Record at 114, a press that would have ranked him #1 on the 2009
list. Okoro is ranked #16 in the deadlift in the 148 weight class
with her 402.2 lb. effort also performed at the WABDL World Championships last
year. Linda should move up the rankings this year as she recently pulled
an easy 420 deadlift in training. Coach Hudson was ranked #13 in the bench press for
Superheavyweights, a class that includes two weight classes: 308 and
308+. Coach Hudson lifts in the 308 weight class and earned the #13 spot
with a 639 bench press performed at the WABDL World Championships last
November. In 2008, Coach Hudson was ranked #3 with a 700 bench press, but he
dropped about 30 pounds of bodyweight in 2008.

UHD's Veterans Services moves to its own campus headquarters in S-244
UHD's Veterans Services department moved to its own headquarters recently in 244 South, One Main Building.
Started last year in a corner of the Registrar's office, Veterans Services works closely with men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families as they seek to earn their college degrees and return to civilian life.Michael Records, a veteran and UHD alum, is manager of Veterans Services. He provides information to veterans on the benefits and services available and answers questions on educational benefits and certifying enrollments for the Department of Veterans Affairs. His office also monitors students' degree plans and academic progress and can refer veterans to the appropriate agencies for help.
During its first year of existence, Veterans Services worked with more than 300 UHD student veterans, and that number is expected to grow. The larger and separate office space allows for a computer lab and study area for veterans. Once computer terminals, furniture and other details are in place, Veterans Services will schedule an open house later this summer. Stay tuned for the time and date.
