UHD's Veterans Services moves to its own campus headquarters in S-244
UHD's Veterans Services department moved to its own headquarters earlier this week in 244 South, One Main Building.
Started last year in a corner of the Registrar's office, Veterans Services works closely with men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families as they seek to earn their college degrees and return to civilian life.Michael Records, a veteran and UHD alum, is manager of Veterans Services. He provides information to veterans on the benefits and services available and answers questions on educational benefits and certifying enrollments for the Department of Veterans Affairs. His office also monitors students' degree plans and academic progress and can refer veterans to the appropriate agencies for help.
During its first year of existence, Veterans Services worked with more than 300 UHD student veterans, and that number is expected to grow. The larger and separate office space allows for a computer lab and study area for veterans. Once computer terminals, furniture and other details are in place, Veterans Services will schedule an open house later this summer. Stay tuned for the time and date.

See UHD's Hispanic Quiz team members on Channel 13's Viva Houston show
Congratulations to members of UHD's Hispanic College Quiz team. Members were featured on Channel 13's Viva Houston show Sunday, June 20, with host Erik Barajas, left. The group taped a segment of Viva Houston. Photographed with Barajas are: team coach Michelle Falcon, assistant director of Student Activities; team helper and UHD senior Tracy Chanthavong; and, from left, team members Manuel Fernandez and Jose Uribe.
If you didn't have a chance to catch the show June 20, click here for a taped video. Once on the Viva Houston website, click the third box under the screen for segment 3 of the June 20 show.
A full five-member team represented UHD in Chicago in April during taping of the 2010 "Know Your Heritage: Hispanic College Quiz" produced by Central City Productions. Results of that competition are embargoed until the show airs during Hispanic Heritage Month next fall.
Meanwhile, Fernandez and Uribe were put to the test again during Viva Houston when the author of "Hispanic Firsts: 500 Years of Extraordinary Achievement" joined them on the set. Author Nicolas Kanellos' 372-page reference book was used to formulate questions for Hispanic College Quiz, and Kanellos tested team members' knowledge again on Viva Houston by asking a few spontaneous questions. Watch the show to see what happened.
