The WRoCk OWL is ready to fly
UHD's Writing & Reading Center (WRoCk) will pilot two versions of real-time online tutoring this summer to help meet different online learning styles. Its On-Line Writing Lab (OWL) is now
available to all students, especially fully online students and students at the
remote campuses.
WRoCk's version of OWL is available through Second Life,
a virtual environment currently being used for educational purposes at
UHD. Students who enjoy video games may
benefit from online tutoring in Second Life.
They create their own avatar, much like a video game, and meet with a
tutor
in WRoCk's specially designed Second Life UHD Writing Center. For more
information and instructions about
Second Life tutoring, go to http://www.uhd.edu/wrock and click on the
Second Life tab.
For students familiar with Skype, the second OWL
will look familiar. If students
have a webcam and a microphone, tutors and students can communicate and share
documents, all in real-time. If students don't have a webcam or a microphone,
they can still have a consultation with a tutor by uploading documents and
using a chat function to communicate.
Appointments for OWL tutoring are available at http://www.rich15.com/uhd. Late evening and weekend hours are available
for OWL tutoring. Back to Top
