UHD Name Selection Poll Results
The overwhelming choice in UHD's recent Name Change Straw Poll was Houston City University with 1,702 votes. City University received 401 votes, and 404 individuals selected neither name in the advisory web-based survey.
Some 2,507 individuals participated, including 1,652 students, 358 faculty and staff and 497 alumni. Public Affairs is reviewing and categorizing comments and  will report that data in Skyline as soon as the work is complete.

During the summer, UHD administrators will continue to meet with alumni and other key individuals about the name-selection process. The straw poll is advisory.   UH System Board of Regents will select a new name for UHD and will consider input, including the straw poll results.

UHD garage reopened for parking

The top levels of the Faculty-Staff Garage reopened at 8:20 a.m. today following repairs to perimeter fencing over the weekend. UHD Facilities Management had outside engineers evaluate damage June 11 after an employee vehicle accident late June 10. The engineers are expected to make recommendations to enhance garage safety with perimeter protection options and installation of speed bumps.

UHD Sustainability Council hosts talk
on oil spill impact on Galveston Bay

The UHD community is invited to a UHD Sustainability Council  presentation on the BP oil spill and its possible effects on Galveston Bay at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, in room N420.

Presenters from the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) will be Lisa Gonzalez, research scientist, and Jim Lester, vice president and chief operating officer. For more information about HARC, please visit the website.

UHD team participates in and raises funds for vets during Impact A Hero 5K

Impact A Hero Team

Several members of the UHD community helped raise more than $250 for U.S. veterans and their families as they received pledges and participated in the June 5 Impact A Hero 5K held in Sugar Land. The UHD group was among more than 1,700 participants who helped raise money to support veteran heroes and their families, several of whom were at the event. More than $228,000 was raised. Results are posted on the Impact A Hero website.

Two training sessions available to explain new UHD Contract Agreements

Two training sessions are planned for Thursday, June 17, to introduce new Contract Agreements, demonstrate the new contracting web pages and offer additional details about pending changes. UHD employees who handle contracts are urged to attend one of the two training sessions, which are planned for 9 to 10 a.m. and from 2 to 3 p.m. in Room 1099-N.

Besides introducing the new agreements and the new contracting web pages, the sessions will include information on the following:
  • Restrictions on use of new Agreements
  • Pricing options on the Standard Purchasing Agreement
  • Use of Service Order pricing option
  • Insurance requirement options and when insurance is/is not required
  • Update of Contract Cover Sheet
Please register through PASS by Wednesday, June 16, to attend one of the training sessions.

Get the Scoop sessions set to explain state changes to employee benefits

Pending changes to the Employees Retirement System (ERS) benefits will be explained during a series of Get the Scoop information sessions, starting with the first session from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 24, in the Library Event Room.

UHD's summer enrollment for employees to make changes to their group insurance coverage runs from July 5 to 30 this year, so the Get the Scoop meetings offer good opportunities to better understand benefit changes and to ask questions about the pending changes to the FY 2011 benefits.

Get the Scoop sessions will help employees make informed decisions. Scoops of ice cream will be served. Additional sessions - all from 2 to 4 p.m. - are planned for:
  • Wednesday, July 7, Library Event Room
  • Monday, July 12, White Oak Room
  • Thursday, July 15, White Oak Room
  • Tuesday, July 20, Library Event Room
  • Monday, July 26, Library Event Room

Summer Sustainable activities to start with bath salt workshop June 18

Several sustainability events are set for this summer, including two Do-It-Yourself  workshops this month, starting with "Make Your Own Bath Salts" from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, June 18, in room N-420.

Participants will use organic color and fragrance to create their own unique bath salt. The second workshop, "Make Your Own Notebook," will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, June 25, in room N-420. Participants are asked to bring misprints and other used paper that can be re-purposed into notebooks.

Sustainable events continue in July with a workshop for those interested in learning how to hold "green" events and meetings on campus.  The "G.E.M. Workshop" will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, July 23, in room C-100.  The workshop itself will demonstrate many green practices, and lunch will be provided for participants.

Also in July, with a date and time to be announced, will be the "Reuse Market" where everyone will be invited to bring new or gently used items that they no longer need and pick up items that interest them.  All surplus items will be donated to a local charity.
