Network maintenance scheduled for Friday; Banner backup this weekend

Information Technology will perform important security updates on several computing servers between 4 and 7 a.m. Friday, June 11. During this time, the following services will be unavailable intermittently:

Blackboard Vista
Exchange e-mail (Outlook Client, Outlook Web Access and Outlook Mobile Access)
Xpressions voice mail system (access to messages via phone or e-mail)
Access to UHD network remotely via VPN
Access to files residing on network share drives H and S
Faculty & Staff e-services (payments, personal data and class roster)
Student e-services (payments, schedules, personal data and grades)
Access to Student Account Info via e-services (usernames and passwords for GatorMail, Network ID and Blackboard Vista)
Fortis document management system
PowerFAIDS financial aid system
Print control system for students
AdAstra (classroom scheduling system)
Espaces (SharePoint)
Video On-Demand and Live Video Streaming
UHD Online Calendar

Also, IT will perform monthly backup of Banner (Student Records System) from 7 p.m. Saturday, June 12, until 7 a.m. Sunday, June 13. The following services will be unavailable during the backup period:

Banner (Student Records System)
Faculty & Staff e-services (payments, online password reset, personal data and class roster)
Student e-services (payments, schedules, personal data and grades)
Access to Student Account Info via e-services (usernames and passwords for GatorMail, Network ID and Blackboard Vista)

Urban Education extends application deadlines to July 1 for some programs

The Department of Urban Education has extended the application deadlines until July 1 for the following programs:

Master of Arts in Teaching
Masters of Arts in Teaching with Certification (ACP/MAT)
Alternative Certification (ACP)

Freshman Orientation sessions begin today for Fall 2010 semester

Freshman Orientation sessions at UHD begin at 7 a.m. today in the Special Events Center and Auditorium. Today's daylong orientation runs through 4 p.m. UHD faculty and staff are encouraged to wear their name tags and welcome new students as they get to know the UHD campus.

Several orientation events are planned this summer, including a second freshmen orientation from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 10. Upcoming sessions include the following:

June 15 and 16 - Freshman Orientation
June 22 - Non-Traditional Student Orientation
June 29 and 30 - Freshman Orientation
July 7 - Non-Traditional Student Orientation
July 19 - Transfer Orientation
July 20 and 21 - Freshman Orientation
July 27 and 28 - Freshman Orientation
July 30 - Non-Traditional Student Orientation

UHD will form MS-150 Cycling Team for 2011 charity bike event to Austin

If you are interested in raising money for multiple sclerosis research, consider joining UHD's 2011MS-150 Cycling Team, which plans its first meeting from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, in the Library Events Room, N420.

Entrepreneurship Workshop set for UHD College of Business June 25

UHD's College of Business and MYOBusiness have teamed up to offer a daylong workshop for entrepreneurs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, June 25, in Room B140 of the Shea Street Building. Dubbed "Mind Your Own Business Entrepreneurship Workshop," the session is designed for longtime business owners, those just starting out or those whose business remains in the dream stage.

Working entrepreneurs will share real-life scenarios, address critical issues, offer proactive marketing and sales strategies and information on best practices. Presenters include Ken Jones, director of UHD's Center for Entrepreneurship; Deborah Hroch, president of Hroch & Associates; and Scott Black, president of MarSell & Associates. The June 25 workshop is the first of an upcoming series of workshops; registration remains open for the July 23 session.

Admission is free to UHD students and alumni if they register using code STU0625 and using a student ID. Cost is $295 for other registrants.

Skyline eNews to publish Tuesdays and Wednesdays during summer 2010

The UHD community can stay updated on campus news and events this summer through semiweekly publication of Skyline eNews. The electronic newsletter will be delivered to employees through their UHD e-mail accounts on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings until the fall 2010 semester. Special editions of Skyline will be sent out if needed.

Students will continue to receive their own electronic newsletter - the Landing - also on Tuesdays and Wednesdays via their gatormail accounts. Please continue to send Skyline and Landing information on your events to the publications' e-mail links at the bottom of the newsletters or call UHD Public Affairs at 713-226-5504.

UHD Sports & Fitness offers summer CPR/AED certification training sessions

Learning how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to use automated external defibrillation (AED) devices can be life-saving training. UHD Sports & Fitness will offer certification training on these topic in June and July.

CPR/AED certification training is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 10 and 11, and also from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, July 16. The certification training costs $5 for UHD students, faculty and staff members and is limited to the first 15 people who prepay for the class. Certification is valid for one year. Stop by the Student Life Center to reserve your spot.

UHD's year-end deadlines announced for FY 2010 purchase requisitions

Purchase requisitions to be processed against FY2010 funds must be submitted to the Purchasing Department by specific deadlines in June, July, August and early September. For a complete list of specific deadlines and explanations, please click here and print out the list.

Information on FY11 purchase requisitions will be sent out to the UHD community later this summer.

Register this week for Sports & Fitness Biggest Loser summer competition

UHD Sports & Fitness will host the UHD Biggest Loser competition for teams or individuals who can compete to lose the most weight in 10 weeks, from June 9 to August 13.

Register by June 11 to participate in the campuswide competition designed to help people lose weight in a healthy and fun way. Click here for a registration form and flier on the Biggest Loser event. Cost is $5 per person to register.

The contest is open to UHD students, faculty and staff members. Teams must have at least five members, and all must work in the same University department.

Aerobics, fitness programs and personal trainers available during summer

UHD Sports & Fitness invites the University community to participate for free in aerobics and fitness programs, the first time these sessions have been offered during the summer months.

The Sneak Peek Fitness Programs, which include pilates, yoga, martial arts and a boot camp, are under way now through August with classes from noon to 1 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays. Click here for a summer schedule.

Aerobics classes also are under way through August 4, with a wide variety of classes offered at different times throughout the way. Check out the full schedule of exercise opportunities here.

Scholars Academy Alumni reunion unites students, faculty and alums

Alums, students and faculty from the College of Science and Technology viewed student poster presentations and visited during the opening reception, which was followed by a dinner. The Scholars Academy started in 1999 with 20 students and has grown to about 150 students and 400 alumni.

Encourage students to use Career Services throughout their time at UHD

Career Services can provide support and resources for UHD students from their first day of class through their graduation and beyond. Please remind your students this summer that Career Services offers year-round workshops and services, including the following:

New students - Career Services can help students choose majors and narrow down career paths. Assessments can be given to determine majors and careers that best fit students' skill sets and personalities.
Interim students - Continued career counseling may be given throughout students' time at UHD. Career Services can help find career- related internships and part-time or full-time jobs.
Upper classmen - Job search preparation like resume reviews, mock interviews, expanded job search assistance and one-on-one career counseling are all part of Career Services' resources.
All students - All current students and UHD alumni may take advantage of Career Services' resume and interview workshops, Career Expos, jobs4gators database, career assessments and counseling and employer events.
