pace with changing job titles and the expanding responsibilities of today's

Help support National Police Week, get blue ribbons from UHD Police
The University of Houston-Downtown Police Department invites the UHD community to pick up a complimentary blue ribbon to show support for National Police Week May 9-15.
The number of ribbons is limited so get yours as soon as possible. Ribbons are available at the UHD Police Department headquarters, Room 118-North, or the parking office at 354-North.
The blue ribbon tradition started several years ago when a group called Concerns of Police Survivors encouraged the general public as well as police cruisers to fly blue ribbons from their car antennae during National Police Week. The resulting sea of blue shows support for police officers on the street and for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
UHD Police thank the University community for its continued support.

Deadline is June 1 for urban high school teacher preparation
program
Students interested in joining the University of
Houston-Downtown's special master's program to prepare high school teachers
should apply before June 1 for the fall 2010 semester.
Secondary Educators Engaged in Quality Urban Education (SEEQUE) is funded by a
nearly $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education and represents
UHD's innovative approach to preparing teachers to work with high school
students. These teacher candidates gain valuable teaching experience while
earning teacher certification and a master's degree (Master of Arts in
Teaching, MAT).
"Within the first year of the graduate program, teacher candidates can be
designated as 'highly qualified,' which allows them to seek employment as a
teacher," said Project Director Anjoo Sikka, professor in UHD's Department of
Urban Education.
To earn the designation as "highly qualified," students must complete
required coursework and pass the grades 8-12 teacher licensure exam. UHD
faculty Sikka and Ron Beebe received the grant in October 2009.
For the
complete story, see the news release.

Recognizing volunteer opportunities on UHD campus during National Volunteer Week April 18-24
National Volunteer Week is April 18-24 and UHD is involved in several service-learning initiatives through the Office of Community Engagement and
volunteerism through the student-driven Community Involvement Center.
Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week is a time to inspire and encourage people to engage with their
communities by volunteering, and UHD has had a memorable year along these lines. UHD was
named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll - read more here - and was recently certified to distribute presidential service awards to
volunteers in the greater Houston area. See attached. The President's Volunteer Service Award is an initiative of the
Corporation for
National and Community Service (see Web site)
and administered by the Points of Light Institute. Visit its Web site for more information and ideas.
The hours given in service demonstrate collective
power for social change. This year, the Points of Light Institute recognizes
the one-year anniversary of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act and
creation of the Volunteer Generation Fund.
The Office of Community Engagement will have information on volunteer and community service ideas and available scholarships at its table at UHD's Earth Day celebration April 22 on the South Deck.
