Navy/Army Phase II SBIR Meeting a Huge Success |
On July 1st, OptiPro held their Phase II Navy / Army SBIR Review Meeting. OptiPro presented and demonstrated its current progress in developing technologies to grind, polish and measure aerodynamic infrared domes and conformal sensor windows. 49 participants attended the event, our largest group ever (standing room only!). Those attending the meeting included Raytheon Missile Systems, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Goodrich Aerospace, Exotic Electro-Optics, Raytheon Missile Systems, Elcan Raytheon, and TA&T. SBIR updates were given by OptiPro, Optimax, QED Technologies, ASE Optics, Applied Science Innovations, CeraNova, Penn State University Electro Optics Center (EOC), and the University of Rochester. Demonstrations of four of OptiPro's newest machines, including the ePX 200, the eSX 200, UltraForm Finishing (UFF 150), and the 5 axis non-contact measuring system "UltraSurf" were given by Jayson Tierson, Adam Farnung, Scott Bambrick and Scott DeFisher respectively. Mike Bechtold, President, OptiPro Systems, mentioned that "the increased level of interest in our new technologies this past year proves that we are quickly moving in the right direction." |

OptiPro Receives Navair Phase II SBIR |
On June 25th, 2009, OptiPro Systems received their contract for completion of a two-year Phase II SBIR with the NAVY. The title of the proposed effort is "Conformal Sensor Window." OptiPro will be teaming with the University of Rochester Mechanical Engineering Department, Penn State's Electro-Optic Center, and NASA Goodard in an effort to create techniques for grinding, polishing, and measuring conformal/freedom shaped precision optics.
During this contract, OptiPro will be developing the beta version of an OptiPro SXL 500: Bridge Style Optics Machining Center. With this new platform, we will be testing both a scaled-up version (4 inch wheel) of the UltraForm Finishing process and a high torque grinding spindle. Our eventual goal is to produce a window with approximate dimensions of 200mm by 200mm according to a design to be reached by mutual agreement with the government. For example, a possible challenging window shape would be a section of a torroid with a radius of 100mm along one axis and 600mm along the perpendicular axis.
Future air vehicle will benefit from sensor windows that conform to the shape of the airframe. Conformal shapes have the potential to reduce drag, increase the field of view, and decrease signature. |

OptiPro Introduces UltraSurf |
OptiPro introduced its new "UltraSurf" 5-axis metrology system at OptiFab trade show in Rochester this past May. This latest addition to OptiPro's metrology product line is the first ultra-precision measurement system capable of non-contact measurement of complex optical shapes. It is the only measurement system that can measure the thickness of the inside and outside surfaces of unusually-shaped optics without touching them! Both the dual probing option and the powerful analysis software makes the OptiPro "UltraSurf" the "best in class" for non-contact measuring of complex optical components.
