Baby Humpback Whale

Born at Koloa Landing !!!

We witness this once every 4 or 5 years !!!

Humpback born in Whalers Cove

Early Saturday morning, the pool technician at Whalers Cove in Po'ipu witnessed something rarely seen inside the South Shore cove.

A humpback whale gave birth while a protective adult whale paced back and forth protecting the newborn inside the cove, according to Marianne Martin, general manager at Whalers Cove. She said the whale was so large on-lookers wondered how she could turn around inside the small cove.

The whales stayed inside the cove and surrounding area for a couple hours. The mother whale was gently pushing the new baby up as if to show the world her new creation, Martin says. 'It was the most precious, amazing thing I have ever seen!'

COMMENT from Scuba Steve :

This picture does NOT do justice to the excitement of the birthing event!

There must have been over 100 by-standers and on-lookers when the baby was born!

When I drove to the Landing that morning to check on diving conditions, I saw the crowd that had gathered up on Hoonani Road (overlooking the water) and at first I thought that either a catamaran had struck the rocks and/or had capsized, or - worse - I feared that there was an in-water rescue taking place.

Much to my surprise ... I saw the baby Humpback!  It rose to the surface ... rolled over on its back and "waved" with one flipper to the excitement of the crowd!

(Fish have "fins", and since a whale is a mammal and not a fish, it has "flippers"".)

Then, it seemed like Mom said, "Son, let me show you how it's done!", and then SHE rolled over on her back and "waved" with BOTH of her flippers !!!  Junior took off, with Mom chasing him all around the "Bowl" for about 10 minutes.

Then, what looked like the bow of a HUGE Nuclear submarine started to breach the surface of the waters !!!  It was Dad, coming in to gather up his new family !!!

Now ... those of you who know me will understand this next statement ... I think I heard Dad say something like "Come on, guys!  We're on a mission!  Plan your work ... Work your Plan!    We gotta get to Home Depot and CostCo before it gets too crowded!  Let's get moving!"

And, with that, all three whales swam out into the open waters !!!  You should have been here !!!
