Early Saturday morning, the pool technician at Whalers Cove in Po'ipu witnessed something rarely seen inside the South Shore cove.
A humpback whale gave birth while a protective adult whale paced back and forth protecting the newborn inside the cove, according to Marianne Martin, general manager at Whalers Cove. She said the whale was so large on-lookers wondered how she could turn around inside the small cove.
The whales stayed inside the cove and surrounding area for a couple hours. The mother whale was gently pushing the new baby up as if to show the world her new creation, Martin says. 'It was the most precious, amazing thing I have ever seen!'
