TIP OF THE MONTH

Organizing and Developing Your
Asset Reliability Improvement Program

As I work with organizations around the world assisting them in improving their asset reliability and maintenance management programs, the first thing that must done is to develop a Master Plan. A Master Plan will provide you with an organized approach from which to develop your plans and track your progress.

The key component to a Master Plan is developing a list of all the tasks needed to accomplish your objectives, and then placing them in the proper order. An example of this: you cannot populate your Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software until you develop the rules and guidelines. This would include how to write, when to write, and who can write a work order.

Other examples to help you get your list started are:
  • Develop the vision
  • Communicate the vision
  • Maintenance management training
  • Work order format standards
  • Backlog development and management
  • Performance measures
  • Spare parts needs and issues
  • Planning meetings
  • Transportation issues
Remember the key to any successful project or program is to document what you are planning to do, prioritize, assign a responsible person, and measure your performance to the Master Plan.

If you would like a detailed list of Master Plan tasks, you can find one here: Master Plan List. Or, if you would like the Excel spreadsheet version, email Anne at Anne@cemaintenancesolutions.com and she'll send one to you.
