Legislation Updates - 6th April 2010

Fire safety: Employers in England will have to assess a worker's capabilities to carry out fire safety-related tasks.

Sickness absence: A new statement of fitness for work is being introduced to replace existing medical statements (or 'sick notes')

Conventional tower cranes: Businesses responsible for ensuring that conventional tower cranes used on construction sites are thoroughly examined by a competent person must give the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) information about such cranes.

Building Regulations: Construction businesses will have to comply with changes to the Building Regulations 2000. These will introduce for new buildings:

·         a minimum water efficiency requirement

·         a maximum temperature requirement for bath water

·         The rules will also be strengthened and clarified on:

·         the safety of hot water systems

·         the supply of water of suitable quality for personal and food hygiene

·

Street works supervisors and operatives: Supervisors and trained operatives will have to be reassessed every five years before they can re-register on the Street Works Qualification Register and continue to carry out street work
Employee Vehicle Safety

Did you know that if an employee has an accident on the road whilst driving for work that you could be liable - even if the car is their own? Or that a fatal crash on company time can oftencost a business around £1 million?

The truth is that you are responsible for the health and safety of your employees at work. And that includes time spent driving, whether in a private or company car. It's clear that you need to effectively manage the risks that are on the road, day in, day out. Otherwise, the impact on your business's finances, reputation (and your own peace of mind) could be terrible.

There are a number of documents held by your staff that should be checked regularly. The principle document is the Driving Licence, which should be checked every 6 months, as a minimum and we can help you to do this.
