Ladder Exchange Initiative 2009

HSE launched their Ladder Exchange Initiative for 2009 this week. Running from 1st September to 31st December if you have a ladder which is bent, broken or battered you can part exchange it for a new one at any of the HSE's partner outlets who are offering discounts on the sales of all ladders.

It also provides dutyholders with an opportunity to review pre-use checks, training, supervision and other arrangements for ladder work.

During 2007/8, 58 workers died and 3623 suffered a serious injury as a result of a fall from height. Ladders remain the most common agent involved and account for more than a quarter of all reported falls from height incidents.

Business Continuity Plan - Top Tip

Is your business close enough to be affected by problems next door? Have you assumed that you will be covered by your neighbours insurance? If you do, you may get a nasty shock, as insurance works best when you cover yourself. Especially if your neighbour assumed nothing would happen to them and decided  not to cover themselves. Businesses in central London had to evacuate their premises recently for exactly that reason.

Top Tip: You probably don't have the time to develop a business continuity document - even though it could be as small as one A4 page. So keep a list of equipment that is critical to your business off site so you don't have to rely on your memory. Remember what happened on "snow day" and focus on what didn't work in your business that day. They're probably your weak points

Improving Worker Involment on Construction Sites

The new guide, 'Short guide to improving health and safety on construction sites through effective worker involvement' put together by the HSE and UCATT will help reduce accidents and improve worker involvement on construction sites.

The guide has been designed to provide practical information for employers and workers on how by working together they can improve site safety and reduce accidents. This will guide employers on how to manage worker engagement and to provide leadership.

Don't treat your clients better than you would treat yourselves. Ensure that the pressure your best client may occasionally place on you doesn't put your staff in a position where their sense of loyalty overtakes their level of training and therefore place your company in a dangerous position risking accidents and possible litigation resulting in severe fines and possible custodial sentences for management and staff. Ensure they are adequately trained in their respective roles.
