Featured Feline:
Zion

Zion
Zion was found on our doorstep at the beginning of March. He is a very sociable cat and likes to meet people and animals! Zion is very curious of his surroundings--if something is new or has been moved, he has to investigate it. This sweet kiddo just can't seem to get enough attention! He is so ready to find a family he calls his own! Zion is a member our Lonely Hearts Club, which means you can bring him home for only $45!

Compatible Canine:
Sasha

Sasha
Sasha was brought to us with her housemate, Mack, due to a child in the home developing allergies in mid-August. Beautiful Sasha has a bounce in her step! She is a very laidback girl who would do well in a low-key family setting. We recommend she go to a home without children under 12, just because younger kids may be a little too rambunctious for her. Mack and Sasha will be able to adapt to separate homes, but if you would like them both, we'd be happy to send them home together as Bowwow Buddies for only $125!

Greetings!

It's the final two weeks of the Moolah-Paw-Looza raffle ticket sales!

You could win the $2,500 grand prize, or one of three $1,000 prizes. Moolah-Paw-Looza raffle tickets cost only $25, and all the proceeds go to support our spay/neuter program for homeless animals.

As you know, spaying and neutering is vital to decreasing the numbers of unwanted animals in our community. In 2011, the Cedar Valley Humane Society spayed or neutered more than 700 shelter animals; in the first six months of 2012, we spayed or neutered nearly 400.

We have a wonderful partnership with Anamosa Veterinary Clinic; they spay and neuter our shelter animals at a much-reduced rate. But 700+ animals a year still adds up!

So, please, if you haven't gotten your Moolah-Paw-Looza tickets yet, stop in to the shelter or the Second Chance Thrift Store to purchase them. Or, if it's closer, visit the Anamosa Veterinary Clinic.

Moolah-Paw-Looza is a chance for us ALL to win--the animals, the community, and YOU!

Together, we can make a difference-

Kirsten Eddins
President
Board of Directors

P.S. If $25 is more than you can afford, but you'd still like to help, please donate today. Any amount will help us help the animals in our care.

We Asked, You Answered!
speech bubble

What's the most obsessive/compulsive thing your pet does?

Bryan Giblin: My cat likes to look in the mirror a lot.

Chad Cooper: My collie, Chico, will only play with old pairs of denim jeans. He wants nothing to do with conventional dog toys. It's jeans and jeans only.

Lori Overman Pratt: One of my border collies has to "kill" a toy before he eats his food. The other one compulsively licks windows. When you are on the other side of the window it is hilarious because he will just sit there with his tongue up against the window, and it makes for some really funny faces. The one who "kills" his toy also sits and stares for long periods of time at our neighbor's house, waiting for the dogs to be let out.

Josh Sevart: My Lab has to have his food sit in his bowl all day before he will eat it, and he has OCD with playing fetch with his rubber frisbee from when we wake up to when we go to bed. lol

Julie Fisher: My blue heeler, Luke, grabs a shoe out of the shoe box every time he comes in the house after a potty break. He then runs upstairs with the shoe and puts it in my bed. Not the most sanitary OCD but if it makes the little guy happy, oh well. I guess we all have our own little idiosyncrasies.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jennifer Fuhrman

hand and pawJennifer Fuhrman is an outstanding volunteer! She has been coming in on Thursday mornings to give the dogs a little extra TLC since May. Jennifer is willing to help with anything, but really enjoys helping with the animals' medical needs. (This past week, she prepped vaccinations at our microchip and vaccination clinic!) We are so very happy to have Jennifer on board. Thank you, Jennifer, for your time and commitment. The dogs at the shelter cannot lick your face enough!

Happy Tail: Amputee Moses Loves Walking the Neighborhood

We finally got a good picture of Moses, the three-legged beagle we adopted from you almost two years ago!

MosesMoses has always been such a happy dog, but it took him a while to get really comfortable and relax with us. Some of that may have been because we heard he was adopted out and returned twice. It's hard to trust when you get your hopes up for a forever home, and then get taken back again.

You could visibly see the change when he became comfortable and relaxed. He has a couple other dogs to play with at my house, and he keeps up with them very well. Moses and I take a walk every night when the weather is good, and the walk is one of his favorite pastimes. He loves to get out and see the neighborhood.

We did have a few challenges when Moses first came to live with us, but I can't imagine ever taking him back or not having him as part of our family. We love him very much, and I appreciate all your shelter did for him until we had the opportunity to adopt him. You especially did a good job with his leg amputation. He was left with a stub that allows him equal balance when he lies on the floor, and I know he is more comfortable having that balance.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
