Featured Feline:
Louie Luna

Louie Luna
Louie Luna came to us at the end of May as an owner surrender. He enjoys cuddle time and being loved on. If you come and meet Louie Luna, you can see why we say he loves his treats! He may be a little older, but we are sure he feels young at heart! If you give him a chance, Louie Luna will charm you with his antics.
Compatible Canine:
Vinny

Vinny
Vinny's not a dog...he's a horse! (OK...he's really a dog.) This confident boy is very strong and will need a firm, loving person who can show him in a positive way how to behave like a good boy. Small kids would probably be knocked over, so we recommend he go to a home without 'em. Vinny also would do best in a home without cats or small dogs. (He may do all right with a larger dog. Our animal behaviorists would have to observe their first meeting.) Vinny is a big playful galoot, so he needs a fenced-in backyard with plenty of room to run without knocking things over. Vinny transferred in from another shelter in early July. Stop in and meet this lovable guy!

Greetings!

I've been a member of the Cedar Valley Humane Society's board of directors for three years. In that time, we've seen a lot of changes in our organization, and we're in the midst of another transition right now.

If you haven't heard, Bob Citrullo, our executive director, has been called away to take care of family matters in Georgia. Unfortunately, he will not be returning to Cedar Rapids.

Bob has helped us make a lot of positive changes in the time he was here. He brought to our organization an unparalleled depth of knowledge and leadership experience. He did indeed take our organization to the next level, as we hoped he would. The Second Chance Thrift Store is a fine example of how he has positioned us for a successful future.

Finding an executive director of Bob's caliber will be challenging, but we have already identified a few highly qualified candidates. We are certain that we will be able to make this transition smooth, so that we may begin another new, exciting chapter.

I personally am committed to this organization's future and invested in its mission and its success. I know you are, too, and we can count on your continued support. Like Bob always said, "Together, we can make a difference." It's never been more true, so I'll say it as well.

Together, we can make a difference-

Kirsten Eddins
President
Board of Directors

Volunteer Spotlight: Emily Halbur

hand and pawEmily Halbur was a fabulous intern for us this summer! Previously, Emily had volunteered with us, and she came back to do an internship. Emily volunteered over 200 hours in the month of June alone. She helped with anything and everything--from animal care to assisting with the Second Chance Thrift Store to helping the front desk staff. We cannot thank Emily enough for all of her hard work last month!

Happy Tail: Daxie is Perfect Addition to Family

We adopted Daxie on July 13, 2012. The first few days she was really shy and stressed, which was completely understandable. My husband and daughter laid beside her on the Daxiefloor, and that seemed to help make her feel relaxed. The only time she actually would move around was when we took her outside to go potty. She would run around, play and find shady spots to lie in.

Fast forward to now: Daxie is now a very lively and energetic girl. I don't think she ever sleeps! She is a very curious puppy and gets into absolutely everything. She and my youngest daughter have teamed up against me! She has only had two accidents in the house and insists on going potty in our flower bed outside. Silly puppy!

Every morning I take her out, and she insists on playing fetch before coming inside and, being the polite girl she is, she waits for me to go up the stairs before she will go up. She runs and pounces, like a cat, around the living room, playing with our daughters and stealing their toys. (Oh yes! She is a chewer!) She hasn't quite got the hang of "drop/drop it" but she learned "sit" and "lay down" in minutes. She is extremely smart!

She is so gentle! She has captured the hearts of all of us. With her gentle nature and lively attitude she is the perfect addition to our family, and I am not sure how we went this long without her.

I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to adopt her. She is perfect in every way!

Kendra T.
