Featured Feline: Elvis
Elvis came into our care as a stray in November. He is a big boy who would love to have a high lookout point. He is very independent and will just look at you with his big, beautiful eyes until you give him attention. Elvis loves to play with strings and would love to have a lap to call his own. Elvis is one of our Lonely Hearts cats, so his adoption fee is only $45! |

Compatible Canine: Simon
Simon came to us as a stray in the beginning of May. He has a lot of energy and loves to be part of everything going on! He has a friend here at the shelter that he plays peek-a-boo with, but he really wants a family he can call his own! Simon is truly a joy to be around, so come on in and meet him. Simon is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so his adoption fee is only $75. |

Greetings!
Well, it looks like the heat is here to stay.
Pets can really struggle in this hot weather, so keep them inside in the air conditioning if at all possible. Be sure to provide them with plenty of fresh water and shade when outside. Limit their activity, because overexertion can cause heatstroke; exercise your dogs in early morning or in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. Walk your dogs on the grass whenever possible, because roads and sidewalks can burn their paws.
And most importantly, never, EVER, leave your pet in a parked vehicle! Even with the windows cracked open, temperatures inside a vehicle can reach 120 degrees and cause irreversible harm to your beloved furry family member.
If you notice any sign of your pet suffering from the heat, move him into air conditioning, apply ice packs or cold towels to his head, neck, and chest. Let him drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. And get him to a veterinarian right away!
Together, we can make a difference-

Bring out the Best in Your Dog!
Our Dog Obedience Training Classes begin in mid-July and run for seven weeks. The class will cover focus, sit, down, stay, stand, walking on a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination. Cost is $85 if you pre-register; $95 if you pay on the first day of class. The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate. We highly encourage pre-registration because each session is limited to 10 participants. Our Tuesday class is full, but you can still register for the Wednesday class that begins July 11. Please bring the following items to your first class:
- A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
- Treats for your dog.
- Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his sixth year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or |

We Asked, You Answered!
When it comes to your pets, do you refer to yourself as "Mommy" or "Daddy"?
Sabrena Schroeder: Yep, I'm Lucy's Mommy. That's actually what I'm known as at the dog park... maybe two people know my real name... that's not on purpose just kinda what happened.
Jaclyn Keefer: Sure do! And proud of it! And my parents refer to themselves as "Grandma and Grandpa."
Steven Klemzak: Of course I refer to my dog as her dog daddy. Who doesn't refer to themselves as parents to their pet kids?
Sally Schick: Absolutely! And when I say to them, "Where's Daddy?!" they go running to find him.

Volunteer Spotlight: Kelli Kennon-Lane and Lena and Michael Posthuma
Kelli Kennon-Lane and Lena and Michael Posthuma have been rock stars in the past 30 days! All three have helped several newer volunteers learn the ropes on getting pets ready for adoption events and taking them to school/daycare visits. They also helped with the US Bank events. Kelli, Lena, and Michael, each one of you has been instrumental to our success! Thanks to you all from US Bank, the daycare kids, and us for your willingness to help others and step in where needed! |

Happy Tail: Bonnie (now Stella) Having Fun with Her New Family
Hello! My name is Stella! You might remember me as Bonnie the Beagle. I'm having a lot of fun at my new home! I like my backyard the best because it has lots of space for running, lots of interesting smells, and neighbor dogs to play with. My new home also has a guinea pig and two bunny friends.
My owners love me very much. They take me for lots of walks, and I get treats for being such a good girl. I haven't had a single accident since I moved in! I want to thank the Cedar Valley Humane Society volunteers for taking me to Old Navy where I met my new owners. We are such a perfect match for each other!
Stella, along with Joel, Krista, Cailin and Rachel D. Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
