Featured Feline:
Noah

Noah the cat
Noah came to us as a stray in December. He is a very curious boy who wants to check out everything before giving you attention. Noah knows his surroundings, and if something is out of place he needs to investigate it. He prefers not to be held, because he's sure he's missing out on something when he's in your arms. He has striking yellow eyes to match his lovely fur. He would be a great addition to any home, even one with other cats. Noah is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so you can bring him home for only $45!

Compatible Canine:
Charlie

Charlie the dog
Charlie came to us in the middle of April as the result of an eviction. He is very lovey and full of energy. He would do well where he had room to run and catch tennis balls! Charlie would benefit from basic training--we know he likes to dig, but we can help with advice to help manage that behavior. Because of Charlie's tendency to jump, we think he would fit best in a home without small children. (If your children are at least ten years old, that should be OK.) Charlie loves to talk, but he's not a big barker. He just wants to be part of all the action! Charlie is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so he can be adopted for only $75! Come meet this sweetie today!

Greetings!

Bob and MaggieThe Second Chance Thrift Store is going strong, and we're very excited about all the support we've seen from the community.

We've set a date for the Grand Opening, and I'd love to see you all there! We're planning a gigantic sidewalk sale, as well as plenty of fun activities.

KDAT will be broadcasting live, and Barb Jacobs will be on hand to draw pet and people caricatures. Kids of all ages will get a kick out of Sparkles the Clown and the face painting! We're even expecting a special appearance by the Cedar Rapids Police Department's K-9 unit.

For the pets, we'll have a mobile groomer available to bathe dogs and trim their nails. We'll also be holding a microchip and vaccination clinic.

So come on down, say "Hello!" and get some great deals for you and your pets. And remember--all proceeds go directly to helping animals in need.

Together, we can make a difference-

How do you pamper your pet(s)?

Robyn Cox: Fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, cooked meat, cooked eggs mixed in with their food now and then, homemade treats.

Marian Lyons: Brush them, walk them, teach them, keep them healthy, and much more!

Kenda Hernandez: Take them for walks, pet them and scratch under their ears, brush them, and give them goodies...and Juneau likes a carrot when the guinea pig gets one. Give them lots of love as they give us!

Collette Darden: Take Jamaica (cat) to Petsmart to walk around and be adored.

Volunteer Spotlight: Nancy Zmek

hand and pawNancy Zmek began volunteering in April and has done wonders. Nancy has been taking photos of our adoptable pets, and now will be coming in weekly to do so. She has also taken pictures at our cocker spaniel adoption events. (Fabulous!) Nancy's beautiful pictures really shine the spotlight on our cuties, helping them find forever homes just that much faster. We commend Nancy for sharing her time and talent, and for her commitment to the cause. Thanks, Nancy!

Happy Tail: Bensen: A Dog's Eye View

Hi...my name is Bensen. You might remember me, as I was a resident at your establishment for a while in 2011.

I will never forget the day I first met my lady human. It was August 17...she stood and stared at me, and I stared back. She took me out Bensento play, and then she left and I was confused. She came back the next day with a guy and they played in the yard with me. Then they left...I was heartbroken. BUT...on August 19 they came back, with a leash in hand, and took me to my forever home. It's been seven months since I left your care, so I thought I'd send you a note to let you know how I've been.

I love my lady and guy, and they love me! We play ball and rope tug and go for walks around the neighborhood and parks...there are SQUIRRELS at the parks! They love to snuggle so they let me on the furniture (bonus!). I think it's so I can snuggle more with them to keep them safe and warm. My lady takes me with her on her drives around town. I love riding in her truck, barking at any dog I see to let them know 'I'm riding in a truck...hahaha!' And, this is one of the best parts...our house has a fenced yard and trees and SQUIRRELS! It's great just basking in the sun, playing catch and chasing SQUIRRELS!

We also go to a place called Pawsitive Paws for all sorts of things my lady calls classes. One of the classes is called agility. I have to admit, Connie (the boss lady of the class) has turned my lady into a nicely agile human. My lady, however, is still a bit slow, and I often have to wait for her to catch up with me. But, that's okay...she's still learning. We have also gone to an obedience class. Gary (the boss guy of the class) has done a wonderful job with my lady's obedience as well. I sit, she gives me a treat; I lay down, she gives me a treat; I walk at her side (like where else would I walk?), she gives me a treat...this ROCKS! She also takes me there so I can play with other dogs. She calls it socialization, I call it FUN, FUN, FUN!

Well, that's about all the time I have today as we have an appointment with my doctor for a check-up.

Thank you for your hospitality during my stay with you. Rest assured I am happy, healthy, safe and loved.

Bensen

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!

My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to 99 cents a can. That's almost $7.00 in dog money.
