Starlight

Starlight the cat
Starlight was returned to us in mid-March. She loves attention...just give her some loving and you'll discover what a loud motor-box she has! She would do well with any type of family, but we know she will need time to adjust to her new home, so be patient. Our staff can give you tips on how to introduce Starlight into her new environment, so come on in and meet this sweet girl today!
Compatible Canine:
Bandit

Bandit the dog
Bandit came to us as a transfer at the beginning of April. He is full of energy, so he will need a fenced-in backyard with room to run. Bandit does bark, so an apartment would not be a good fit for him. He loves chewy bones and playing tug. Bandit knows sit, stay, and shake. He tends to get nervous around children, so we recommend he go to a home without children under ten years old. He also needs to be the only dog in the home. Bandit is a member of our Lonely Hearts Club, so he can be adopted for only $75! Come meet this sweetie today!

Greetings!

A huge thanks to everyone who came out for Woof Walk!

Executive Director Bob Citrullo Yes, Woof Walk was a successful fundraiser...but it was really so much more. It was an opportunity for residents to come out and enjoy the company of other dog lovers. It was also an occasion for people to show others how much their canine companions enrich their lives. And it was a chance for people to strengthen the bond between themselves and their furry family members. Experiencing that sense of community was genuinely joyful on such a beautiful morning.

Yes, Woof Walk was a great success. It did raise funds so that we can continue to fulfill our mission of helping animals in Eastern Iowa. But, in a more deep-seated sense, it was a success not only because it raised funds, but because the nature of the event itself fulfilled a core part of our mission: building healthy relationships between people and animals.

And that, my friend, is the true meaning of success.

Together, we can make a difference-

Cocker Spaniel Puppy Special Adoption Event: The Final Four!

The final four cocker spaniel puppies will be up for adoption at a Cocker Spaniel Puppy Special Adoption Event on Friday, May 25, at 6:00 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
cocker spaniel puppy
Featured at the adoption event will be three female puppies--Cadence, Cherry, and Truly--and one male puppy named Ace. They are the offspring of Penelope, one of the rescued Sac County cocker spaniels. The puppies were born on March 16, 2012.

Potential adopters must attend the event. Each party will be given two tickets: one for a male puppy, the other for a female puppy. The tickets will be dropped into jars corresponding to the cocker spaniels' genders. (No more than one ticket per household may be dropped into a jar.) Tickets will be drawn from each jar according to the number of puppies of each gender.

Adoption applications will be collected from the parties whose names were drawn. Cedar Valley Humane Society adoption counselors will evaluate applications for fit in the order the names were drawn for each gender. If that application is approved, a puppy of that gender will cocker spaniel puppygo home with that family. If the first party is not a good match, then the second party's application will be evaluated; and so on, until all puppies are adopted. Extra tickets will be drawn as necessary to ensure the puppies are adopted to households that are a good fit.

Our plan is to send the puppies home with their new forever families that day, so we need to make sure that everyone interested in adopting one of these cocker spaniels has puppy-proofed their home and is prepared to welcome a puppy into their lives. A care package consisting of a collar, leash, puppy food, dog toy, and blanket will be sent home with each cocker spaniel puppy.

Potential adopters are required to bring the following with them to the special adoption event:
  • A copy of their lease if they are renters.
  • A copy of the veterinary records for every animal in the home. All animals currently in the home must be vaccinated or the adoption application will be denied.
Adoption applications submitted without the necessary supporting documentation will be denied. Applications may be completed in advance and brought to the adoption event. No applications will be accepted prior to the event. Applications are available at www.cvhumane.org, or you may stop in and pick up an application at the shelter.

On Wednesday, May 23, the cocker spaniel puppies will be moved into the adoption area. We encourage you stop on in and get to know them before the adoption event.

If you have any questions, please call (319) 362-6288 and talk to one of our adoption counselors.

Some things never get old. What does your pet do that cracks you up every time?

Sabrena Schroeder: My dog is a beagle so she has pretty long ears. When she shakes her head, one of her ears ends up flipping and resting on the top of her head. So I have a beagle walking around wth one long ear and one that's all twisted up... pretty hilarious... probably have to see it to get how funny it looks.

Dea Jo Aldrich: My cat, Fred, takes small objects like Lego pieces or twist ties, carries them upstairs to the bathroom, and hides them underneath the bathmat. It's like Christmas every morning to see what treasures he's hidden for us under there.

Denise Janssens: Watching my weiner dog take off running figure eights around the house.

Stephen Pratt: Playing fetch with my cat Pounce. Just watching her bring the ball or stick back with her little prance and smile is just priceless.

Volunteer Spotlight: Christina Welbes and Tony Shumaker

hand and pawChristina Welbes and Tony Shumaker have been volunteering with us for a couple of years now. They help with community outreach, attending adoption events at PetSmart and the Tractor Supply Store, as well as fundraisers such as Woof Walk. Tony woke up extremely early to set up for Woof Walk at 6:00 a.m., and they both stayed until everything was packed up and put away afterwards. Now that's commitment! Thanks, Christina and Tony, for giving us a hand at event after event. Having great volunteers we can count on year after year is essential to our mission...and you two are right there, helping us make it happen!

Happy Tail: A Letter to Tuffy's Adopter

Dear proud new owner of Tuffy,

Back in early December, my neighbors and I noticed that there was a stray dog in our rural neighborhood. The poor little thing looked injured, and so bedraggled, and she was dragging a leash. We tuffy beforespeculated that someone might have dumped her out of a car. Since she was so scraped up, much to our horror, the car could even have been moving when she was pushed out.

She took refuge on my front step. I put food and water out for her, and a rug for her to curl up on. Whenever I would try to approach her, she would shy away. After a few days, my neighbor saw her in my yard, so he followed her a ways and got close enough that he could grab her leash. He agreed to take her home and make a nice warm, safe place for her in his barn. Whew, what a relief that she could at least be warm and dry and fed in the meantime.

Lo and behold, she was back on my front step in the morning! I don't know what the big attraction of my step was, but it made me feel good that she felt close to me. Out of the goodness of this same neighbor's heart, he brought his extra doghouse, all lined with straw, over for her. We had to go out of town the following weekend. I put the doghouse in my garage so she would have a safe haven while we were gone, and another neighbor agreed to make sure her food and water were replenished.

The day of reckoning was approaching when I had to decide what to do with our little boarder. Shortly after she arrived, I started calling her Tuffy since she had been through so much and was enduring her hardship like a trooper. I knew that I couldn't possibly keep her even though I had become so attached to her. Yet another neighbor came forth and volunteered to help me out by driving us to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, where we knew she would have continued care and, hopefully, a new home.

Obviously, by this time, I had gained her trust and was able to pet her and restore her trust in the human race. I sat with her in the backseat on the way to the Humane Society, and she licked my hand as we rode along. That brought tears to my eyes.

As soon as we got in the door at the Humane Society, there were several staff members right there to assist us and usher me through the surrender process. By that time I was really crying, knowing that I soon had to say goodbye to Tuffy and to wish her the very best in whatever life had in store for her. The woman at the counter was so understanding and helpful and reassuring that I was doing the right thing.

I wanted you to know that there was such a story to tell about Tuffy before we even brought her in. She touched the hearts of my neighbors and me. It took a "village" of compassionate people in our neighborhood to get her to this point where even more compassionate people took over to give her all the intense treatment and tender care that she needed to survive.

A big thank you to everyone who took mercy on her to get her to the happy ending of being the "poster girl" for the Paw Print Quarterly, and, most of all, to you for adopting Tuffy. When I saw her smiling face on the cover, I just could hardly believe my eyes! All of us who knew her out here were so thrilled. Thank you for welcoming her into your home and for giving her the opportunity to be loved and cared for always.

Sincerely,

Tuffy's temporary caregiver, and the neighbors who helped with her rescue

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
