Featured Feline:
Kristen

Kristen
Kristen came to us as a stray in August. She is very independent and will come to you when she is ready for affection. She probably would do best in a home where she is the only cat. Her big round eyes don't miss anything of what's going on around her. Kristen is a member of the Lonely Hearts Club, which means her adoption fee is only $45!

Jasper

Jasper
Jasper came to us as a stray in the middle of April. He is very easygoing and would do well in any home setting. Jasper loves walks but would benefit from some basic training. We do know he cannot be in a home with cats, but he may do well with other dogs. Jasper is very playful and would benefit from a fenced-in backyard. He loves to chase toys and tennis balls, so get your throwing arm ready!

Greetings!

We're very excited that Woof Walk is almost here!

Woof Walk will be a great time for the whole family! Join us for agility and training demonstrations by Pawsitive Paws Executive Director Bob CitrulloAcademy and the Cedar Rapids Police Department's K9 Unit. Stop and chat with local owners of pet-related businesses. Enter your pet in one of our silly pet contests, like "Best Lap Dog" and "Best Woof!" (All that...and a dog walk, too!)

It's also your opportunity to meet some of the Sac County cocker spaniels. We've invited the families that adopted the rescued dogs to be the Woof Walk Ambassadors, so be sure to say "Hello!"

Plus, we'll be launching our Moolah-Paw-Looza raffle. Purchase a raffle ticket for $25, and you'll have a chance to win the $2,500 grand prize! You could also win one of three $1,000 prizes.

So, what are you waiting for? Visit www.cvhumane.org to register, download the pledge sheets, and start getting pledges from neighbors, family, coworkers, and friends!

Together, we can make a difference-

Leash 'Em Up and Lace 'Em Up!

Woof Walk logo The Cedar Valley Humane Society's second annual Woof Walk ~ Dog Walk and Fun Fest is Sunday, May 20, from 9 a.m. to noon at Noelridge Park (just north of the Noelridge pool parking lot) in Cedar Rapids.

You can walk as an individual or get together with family members, friends, or co-workers and walk as a team! A team of four or more qualifies as a Dog Pack.

Register in advance, and you pay only $30 (or $25 per walker for Dog Pack members). If you sign up the day of the walk, you'll pay $35 per individual or $30 per Dog Pack member. Pets walk free! (Must have up-to-date vaccinations.) The registration fee includes a T-shirt. You also must sign and hand in our liability waiver on the day of the walk. (The liability waiver doubles as an entry form, so you may also use it to register by mail.)

Download a pledge sheet and start collecting pledges right away!

No pet? No problem! You can walk without a dog. And don't forget the Fun Fest, where you'll enjoy demonstrations, vendors, fun contests, and, of course, hanging out with people who love dogs! All proceeds benefit the nearly 2,000 animals the Cedar Valley Humane Society helps each year.

We Asked, You Answered!

How does your pet wake you up in the morning?

Lacie Jae Pfeiffer: She wakes me up by eating a bone in her kennel, letting me know she's up and ready to go out to go potty -- the funny thing my puppy does, when I take her outside right after waking up is that she'll lay down and pick her butt up just enough to go potty. So funny and cute.

Paige Junge: Wake me up? I have to wake her up! She's like a teenager, she'll sleep until 10am if you let her!

Celeste Hussli-Poole: I get a wet nose in my face. Then I open my eyes to a smooshed-up white-fur bed-headed funny face. At least I get a smile from this every single morning. I then say "Outside," which wakes up my other pooch who then bounds off the bed and runs downstairs. Hmmm, for not being a morning person I guess I have pretty good mornings.

Angela Albert: Mine do the stretch and yawn, and then I feel a stare, open my eyes, and see two faces staring at me like "Good morning! Can I go outside?!"

Volunteer Spotlight: Robert Lane

hand and pawRobert Lane has been volunteering with us for just over a year now. This past month, he did a tremendous amount of work at the Second Chance Thrift Store. Robert helped build a wall and a dressing room; he painted the floor; and helped with fixtures and displays, loading and unloading donations, etc. You name it...Robert had a hand in it. He still had time to assist with events, volunteer orientation, and dog walking. Robert always has a smile on his face, and his good-natured attitude is contagious. Thank you, Robert for the hours and hours of time you've put in at the Cedar Valley Humane Society and the Second Chance Thrift Store. You truly make a difference!

Happy Tail: Johnny Brightens Lives of New Family and Students

On December 29 I adopted Johnny, a border collie mix, from the Cedar Valley Humane Society. I had just lost my dog due to the end of a relationship, and I was feeling very sad. Johnny and Mitra

I am a university professor, and Johnny has come to school to give "doggie time" to stressed-out students. It is a blast to take him into the computer lab late at night and let the students pet him. Some of my regular students jog with him and also request "dog time" when they are feeling overwhelmed. Johnny is so calm and just loves to be petted--in fact, he insists on being petted! (That's how we met--he came up to me and stuck his nose in my armpit.) I'm thinking about taking him to training to be a therapy dog. He really is wonderful.

Johnny is such an amazing dog, and he has brightened my life immeasurably. I am very sorry for the family that lost him, but so grateful that he is my pal now. Thank you for the work you do in taking care of animals like Johnny when circumstances beyond their control put them in difficult situations.

Mitra S.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
