Featured Feline:
Scott

Scott the cat
Scott came to us as a stray in the middle of March. We know he was previously owned because he is front declawed. Scott is very independent at times, and at other times he is a little kitty in your lap. He does enjoy attention and loves to be petted on his head and back. We think he would do well with other animals and kids. Scott is so ready for his forever home! Maybe it's yours!
Compatible Canine:
Caeser

Caeser the Akita mix
Caeser came to us as a stray in the middle of April. He is a very unique-looking Akita mix, with one brown eye and one glacier blue. Caeser has really good manners, but would still benefit from basic training, as he is still young and has a lot of energy. He loves being petted and being around all the excitement. He also loves treat time, and he will start to drool to let you know he just can't wait! Stop in and meet Caeser today!

Greetings!

Executive Director Bob Citrullo Great news! Lola's puppies are ready to go home!

Lola was one of 88 dogs rescued from deplorable conditions on a Sac County property. Fifteen of the cocker spaniels came into our care at the end of January. As it turned out, Lola and Penelope were pregnant, so we entrusted them to the excellent and compassionate care of Kirkwood Commmunity College's Veterinary Tech program.

And now, Lola's puppies are ready to go home!

If you're interested in adopting one of these six adorable cocker spaniels, I encourage you to come in and meet them. They will be in our adoption area starting tomorrow at noon. Then, come to our Cocker Spaniel Puppy Special Adoption Event on Saturday at 10am. We look forward to seeing you!

Together, we can make a difference-

Cocker Spaniel Puppy Special Adoption Event

Six cocker spaniel puppies will be up for adoption at a special adoption event this Saturday, April 28, at 10:00 a.m. at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

cocker spaniel puppyFeatured at the adoption event will be four male puppies--Riley, Ransom, Rigby, and Rosco--and two female puppies: Rainy and Marge. They are the offspring of Lola, one of the rescued Sac County cocker spaniels. The puppies were born on February 12, 2012. (They have grown up quite a bit since these photos were taken, but they are just as adorable!)

Potential adopters MUST attend the event. Each party will be given two tickets: one for a male puppy, the other for a female puppy. The tickets will be dropped into jars corresponding to the cocker spaniels' genders. (No more than one ticket per household may be dropped into a cocker spaniel puppyjar.) Tickets will be drawn from each jar according to the number of puppies of each gender.

Adoption applications will be collected from the parties whose names were drawn. Cedar Valley Humane Society adoption counselors will evaluate applications for fit in the order the names were drawn for each gender. If that application is approved, a puppy of that gender will go home with that family. If the first party is not a good match, then the second party's application will be evaluated; cocker spaniel puppyand so on, until all puppies are adopted. Extra tickets will be drawn as necessary to ensure the puppies are adopted to households that are a good fit.

Our plan is to send the puppies home with their new forever families that day, so we need to make sure that everyone interested in adopting one of these cocker spaniels has puppy-proofed their home and is prepared to welcome a puppy into their lives. A care package consisting of a collar, leash, puppy food, dog toy, and blanket will be sent home with each cocker spaniel puppy.

Potential adopters are required to bring the following with them to the special adoption event:
  • A copy of their lease if they are renters.
  • A copy of the veterinary records for every animal in the home. (All animals currently in the home must be up-to-date on their vaccinations or the adoption application will be denied.)
Adoption applications submitted without the necessary supporting documentation will be denied. Applications may be completed in advance and brought to the adoption event. No applications will be accepted prior to the event. Applications are available at www.cvhumane.org, or you may stop in and pick up an application at the shelter.

The Wednesday before the event the cocker spaniel puppies will be moved into the adoption area. We encourage you stop on in and get to know them before the adoption event.

If you have any questions, please call (319) 362-6288 and talk to one of our adoption counselors.

What's the scariest medical emergency your pet has ever had? (And we're hoping there was a happy ending...)

Dawn A Roth: When my rat terrier was about 8 months old, she tried to swallow a bee and was stung in her throat. She swelled shut, turned blue and stopped breathing. Fortunately, my vet is just down the street, and I was able to rush her there. She recovered with no ill effects. I have to keep Benedryl on hand in case she has a reaction again, but I haven't had to use it.

Diane Stefani: Eating sugar free gum. Did you know the ingredients in sugar free gum are toxic to dogs?

Andrea Hilby: My Weimaraner Hailee was caught in a barbed-wire fence about 5 years ago. We couldn't find her for around 4 hours. I thought for sure she was gone. I was heartbroken and told my parents I wasn't going to bed until I knew where she was. We had people looking everywhere... around the area in ditches, on the interstate... everywhere. Finally she got out somehow, all tore up and bleeding. We took her right away to the emergency pet hospital where they did surgery, and we took her home that night. That was a very scary night!

Angela Warren: Two emergency surgeries due to bowel obstructions. He can't seem to keep from eating everything... he is half beagle, go figure. But doing great and recovered well.

Volunteer Spotlight: Spencer Ruch

hand and pawSpencer Ruch joined our volunteer staff in August, and he comes in at least twice a month to help out. He assists the front desk staff with customers and answering phones. Spencer also walks dogs and helps potential adopters get to know the dogs better. Recently, Spencer has been helping track volunteer hours and enter data. He is open to doing anything to help and always is in good spirits every time he comes in. Thank you, Spencer, for stepping in wherever needed. The Cedar Valley Humane Society is a better place because of you!

Happy Tail: How Mandy Chose Her New Family

It was February 2005 when I decided my male cat, Bud, needed a feline companion. I went to the Cedar Valley Humane Society to meet the kitties. I spent about an hour and a half in the kitty room while other people came, picked out a cat and left. This is a big decision that I Mandy in gardendidn't want to rush as I like to get a feel for their personalities. I talked to the kitties and brought them out to get a closer look. When I put them back in their cages, they turned around to eat or wash, just generally ignoring me at that point. Except for Mandy, the black and white kitty in the bottom cage. She sat at the front of her cage and watched me the whole time I was there. I decided I better give her another look so I took her out again. "MANDY, arrived in September." When I held her she was soft and purry and so happy, but it was her curiosity and the way she watched everything with such interest that convinced me she was the one.

The front desk staff said she was picked up as a stray. They knew her owner and contacted them, but said they didn't want her anymore. I will never understand that.

Mandy moved right in and became part of the family. Our other cat Bud loves her, and Mandy even helped us raise our black Lab puppy! They still play together. Mandy mostly lives indoors, but in the summer, she loves to head outside to the garden with me where she naps all day behind the flowers. During the long winters we both watch out the windows waiting for the days to get longer and warmer to get back outside to the garden.

I enjoy sharing the story of how Mandy chose me to take her home that day in February.

send us your Happy Tail, too!
