Featured Feline: Khan
Khan came to us at the end of January because his owner was no longer able to care for him. Most of the time he is a quiet boy who stretches when petted. At times he can be quite playful and very fun-loving. He is very curious about new noises and all the activity around him. Stop in and meet him today! |
|
Compatible Canine: Sophie
Sophie came to us in mid-March. Due to a lifestyle change, her family could no longer give her the attention she deserved. Sophie is a good family dog who still has a lot of puppy in her. She does well with kids, but she would benefit from a little obedience training, just so she could learn better doggie manners. This happy-go-lucky girl likes to follow her nose! (What can we say? She's part hound!) Sophie is so ready to find a family to love and call her own. Come meet her today! |

Greetings!
Spring is in full swing, and with the change of seasons comes a full calendar! We're looking forward to a lot of great events--some brand new this year!
Woof Walk is coming up fast on May 20. The Dog Walk and Fun Fest will be a fun time for the whole family! Join us for agility demonstrations, vendors, silly pet contests, and, of course, the dog walk. Woof Walk is a walkathon-style fundraiser, so go ahead and start getting pledges from neighbors, family, coworkers, and friends!
Woof Walk will also launch our raffle, which is something new. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $25, and if you win the grand prize, you get $2,500. There will also be three chances to win $1,000. All proceeds go to support our spay/neuter program for homeless animals.
We'll be running the Doggy Hydration Station at the North Liberty Blues and BBQ Festival on May 26, and we'll be microchipping pets at the Linn County Fair. Both of these are new opportunities for us to connect with the members of our communities and have an impact on the lives of animals.
So be sure to look for us at local farmers' markets, festivals, and parades this spring and throughout the summer. See you there!
Together, we can make a difference-
Bob Citrullo Executive Director P.S. If you'd like to support our efforts to help animals in Linn County and beyond, please take a moment to donate now! |

Bring Out the Best in Your Dog!
Our Dog Obedience Training Classes begin in early May and run for seven weeks. The class will cover focus, sit, down, stay, stand, walking o n a loose leash, heel, and recall. Your dog must be at least five months old with a current rabies vaccination. Cost is $85 if you pre-register; $95 if you pay on the first day of class. The class fee includes a Martingale training collar and a graduation certificate. We highly encourage pre-registration because each session is limited to 10 participants. There are two sessions:
Please bring the following items to your first class:
- A copy of your dog's current shot records (must have an up-to-date rabies vaccination).
- Treats for your dog.
- Phone number you can be reached at in the evenings in case we need to cancel class due to bad weather.
Classes will be taught by Gary Harrington, an Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer and AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Gary also is certified in Pet First Aid through the American Red Cross. This will be his sixth year teaching at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. For more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org. |

We Asked, You Answered!
How does your pet "help" you with the chores, like yard work or spring cleaning?
Kris Herber: If getting under my feet while I am carrying lots of stuff counts... you betcha they love to help.... :) One of my kitties even loves to lick the glass windowpanes, for some reason... so I get to wash the windows more often too... sure do love 'em!
Leila Hennessey: My cat likes to try to help fold laundry and chases the dust mop.
Erin Blockhus: If consistently dropping the ball on me while I'm pulling weeds out and staring at me equals helping...then yes, that is how my dog helps. :)
Jeanne Hall: My foster dog carried wood for me. lol!

Volunteer Spotlight: Kelli Kennon-Lane
Kelli Kennon-Lane has been an outstanding addition to our merry band of volunteers! She helps the animal care staff clean the cat adoption rooms on the weekends. In addition, Kelli attends fundraising events and takes pets to our adoption events, among other things. She even adopted a puppy! Kelli is an all-around great person who works hard and is always very nice and friendly to everyone. Thanks, Kelly! We are lucky to have you! |

Happy Tail: Lufina Brings Joy and Laughter to Family
We wanted to thank you and give you an update on Lufina, the black lab/hound mix that we adopted from you back in November of 2007. She had been returned by two others and found her forever home with us.
She is such a treasure in our lives, and we are overjoyed to have her in our life. She has brought us such joy and laughter--just what we needed after losing both our dogs to old age in '07.
We take her everywhere, and she even comes to work with me on Fridays. I work as office manager at our church and work a half day. I only wear jeans on Fridays, and as soon as I pull out my jeans, she knows it's her day to work, and she gets excited! It's so adorable. Everyone loves her--most especially us! We now live in Alexandria, MN, but still love Cedar Rapids!
Thank you for all you do! Sincerely, Mark and Tracey A. Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
