Featured Feline:
Handsome

Handsome the cat
How can you resist a cat named Handsome who actually winks at you? This good-looking boy came to us as a stray in mid-October. He is very vocal and will call out whenever he sees someone who might be willing to give him love. This kiddo loves to be held and cuddled--you could give him attention 24/7, and that would be perfectly fine with him! Handsome gets along well with other cats, so if you have a cat looking for a friend, Handsome might be your guy!
Compatible Canine:
Lafayette

Lafayette the dog
Lafayette came to us with Lucky, his older brother, because they were too much for their owner to handle together. Lafayette has a good relationship with his brother, but they can be adopted separately. This sweetie does not realize he is a big boy and will need basic training. He loves running laps around the fenced-in yard to help him burn off energy. Stop in and meet Lafayette today!

Greetings!

Bob with Romeo the cat If you haven't yet heard, the Cedar Valley Humane Society will be opening the Second Chance Thrift Store in Cedar Rapids at the end of April. All proceeds from this thrift store will help support the Cedar Valley Humane Society's mission.

The Second Chance Thrift Store is a winning proposition all the way around. It lets us give back to the community by offering a way to recycle gently used items; people will be able to purchase quality used goods at a very reasonable cost. The steady source of revenue furnished by the thrift store will allow our organization to continue to deliver--and even expand!--services that communities have come to expect from us, including our rescue and adoption services.

But, just like our organization, the thrift store can't be successful without you! We need you to clean out your closets and drop off items you no longer need! (Got clothing that your kids have outgrown? An extra toaster oven? A vase that doesn't go with your new sofa?) And once the store is open, we need you to come visit the store and get a great deal on something you DO need! Every little thing you do to support the Second Chance Thrift Store gives homeless animals a second chance.

Together, we can make a difference-

Accepting Items for New Thrift Store

Just in time for spring cleaning... the Cedar Valley Humane Society has a new venture: The Second Chance Thrift Store.

We are currently accepting items in good condition, including clothing, household goods, furniture, books and CDs, and other miscellaneous articles. Before you bring us an item, please call us at (319) 362-6288 to make sure that we can accept it (especially if it's large and bulky!)

Here are a few items that we will not accept:
  • Torn, stained, or broken items
  • Car seats for babies and children
  • Magazines and encyclopedias
  • Built-in appliances
  • Steel desks
  • Used carpeting and padding
  • Automotive parts
  • Plumbing fixtures
  • Firearms
  • Stoves/refrigerators/freezers
  • Used paints and other chemicals
  • Metal
  • Wire hangers
You may drop off your donations at the shelter at 7411 Mount Vernon Road. When you get here, please let us know before you begin to unload your vehicle so we can see what you have and decide where to store it.

When the Second Chance Thrift Store opens in late spring, we'll be rarin' to go with a wide assortment of items to satisfy any thrifty shopper!

All proceeds from The Second Chance Thrift Store will support our mission of helping animals in need.

We Asked, You Answered!
speech bubble

What is your pet sneaky about?

Brittany Nelson: Stealing socks. He'll put three in his mouth, hold his head down and slink to the corner of the room. He must think this makes him invisible. :)

Larry O'Brien: Sneaks around the barricades at the kitty area to dine on their litter box!!

Shannon Freeman Studt: The cats get on top of the counters when we are gone, and if we leave any food on top they take it and enjoy a non-kitty food supplement.

Virginia Balvanz-Krull: Getting into the garbage in the bathroom. Q-tips must be a dog delicacy.

Kimmy Johnson: King the cat loves to look away and creep his paw up and grab parts of my lunch and drag them off the plate and into his mouth.

Volunteer Spotlight: Gary Harrington

Gary gives one-on-one time during classGary Harrington is a certified trainer who has contributed countless hours to the animals in our care. He volunteers several evenings a week to provide basic training for our shelter dogs. Gary's patient, consistent, and positive training methods make a huge difference in their lives. The good doggie manners they learn from him help them get adopted just that much faster!

In addition, Gary teaches four basic obedience classes to the public each year, and he donates all proceeds from the classes to the shelter. Gary, we are incredibly grateful to you for sharing so much of your time and talent. Thank you thank you thank you!

Happy Tail: Spaz and Gage "Write" that They are Making Themselves at Home

Dear wonderful people who took care of us:

We asked if we could borrow the family computer to give you a look into our wonderful new lives! They said we could, as long as we didn't clog the keyboard with our beautiful long hair... so here we go!
Spaz and Gage
We've only been here just over a week, and we are already making ourselves at home! We always use one of the two litter boxes, are eating so well, and even have a dish of kitty grass just for us! They have a little white furball that they call a 'pup', but we think she's just an active, louder version of us. We've played with her a few times already, and she barks loud!

There's also this little red light that comes out of a thing they turn on for us, we like to chase it all around. Interesting how it just disappears sometimes, and only comes out for us when they are holding a little cylinder! We have many beds just for us, a catnip holder with a ball, and strings dangling with toys to bat at.

Well, it's dinner time... so we'll just be off to enjoy food with our new family. Thank you for picking this family for us! There's so much love on both sides!

Spaz and Gage

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
