Featured Feline:
Pidgey

Pidgey the cat
Pidgey was left behind to fend for himself when his owner moved. He is a free spirit who loves to drink water right from the tap. He prefers laps to being held, so it may take a while to get to know him. Be patient, though, and you will be rewarded! He has long, soft, fluffy fur. He has been in our care since November 2010. Pidgey is one of our Lonely Hearts Cats, so you can adopt him for only $45. That's half off the regular adoption fee!

Compatible Canine:
Beauregard

Beauregard the dog
What can we say about Beauregard? He is a reserved boy, but still very social. Even though he is shy at first, he adjusts well to new situations. Beauregard is very strong on the leash, so we suggest obedience classes for him! He would do well with a low-key family that is committed to giving him plenty of exercise every day.

Twelve Cocker Spaniels Find Forever Homes!

Twelve of the rescued cocker spaniels were adopted on at our special adoption event on Saturday, March 3!

Willis going home Our lobby and adoption areas were packed with potential adopters, well-wishers, and the media. Thanks to our volunteers and staff, as well as all the potential adopters who really got into the spirit of the evening, the adoption event went very smoothly.

Amidst cheering and clapping, the cocker spaniels were sent home with their new families that night. It sure seemed like the dogs knew what was going on: for the first time in their lives, they were going to be DOGS, with families and chew toys and couches to curl up on and everything! Happy faces and lolling tongues were everywhere!

We would like to thank everyone who helped make the cocker spaniels' journey a Ben's new familysuccess: all the volunteers and groomers who answered the call and provided immediate care on the first night; community members who supported us with donations of money and supplies throughout the entire process; the media, who covered the cocker spaniels' journey from start to finish; and, finally, all the animal lovers who came to the adoption event, willing to open their hearts and homes to these splendid dogs.

We simply cannot thank you enough. You truly made a difference in the lives of these animals!

Accepting Items for New Thrift Store

Just in time for spring cleaning... the Cedar Valley Humane Society has a new venture: The Second Chance Thrift Store.

We are currently accepting items in good condition, including clothing, household goods, furniture, books and CDs, and other miscellaneous articles. Before you bring us an item, please call us at (319) 362-6288 to make sure that we can accept it (especially if it's large and bulky!) You may drop off your donations at the shelter at 7411 Mount Vernon Road. When you get here, please let us know before you begin to unload your vehicle so we can see what you have and decide where to store it.

When the Second Chance Thrift Store opens in late spring, we'll be rarin' to go with a wide assortment of items to satisfy any thrifty shopper!

All proceeds from The Second Chance Thrift Store will support our mission of helping animals in need.

We Asked, You Answered!

What does your pet think about vacuum cleaners? Are there other appliances or power tools your pet reacts to?

Leila Hennessey: My recently deceased calico hated the noise of the vacuum and taught my tabby to hightail it out of the room with her. On the other hand, use the can opener, and he is convinced you're opening a can of tuna!

John Wiedenheft: Our dogs have always been neutral about the vacuum cleaner. Our Westie would just walk around. Now our Lab is curious, but doesn't like to get close to it! Same with the snow blower, curious but don't get too close!

Tina Kelly: We have one dog that runs and ducks for cover, another that sleeps thru it, and the last dog will roll over and wait for his turn to be vacuumed!

Nicole French: I am the only female in a home full of males: my husband and two male kitties. They ALL avoid the vacuum like the plague BUT love playing with the TV remotes. :-)

Grace Calvert: Our cat Scratchy used to hiss at the vacuum cleaner and hit it five times with his paw. He was the only one brave enough to fight the vacuum cleaner. He always hit it five times!

Volunteer Spotlight: Ruth Fuessley, Buck Brown, Theresa Skvor, Tim Miller, and Phyllis and Jon Griswold

If you've been out to the shelter lately, you've probably noticed we've been getting a facelift!

Painter working in hallwayRuth Fuessley, Buck Brown, Theresa Skvor, Tim Miller, and Phyllis and Jon Griswold have been putting in countless hours to spruce up the place.

From priming and painting to caulking, replacing trim, and hanging photographs, these volunteers have been powerhouses! They have been giving us an extreme shelter makeover, from front to back, top to bottom, north to south, east to west. Nothing has escaped their attention!

The shelter is beginning to look totally put together, thanks to these dedicated, hard-working volunteers. So, Ruth and Buck, Theresa and Tim, Phyllis and Jon, we thank you!

Happy Tail: AJ (now Onyx) is Goofy, Ever-Curious Sweetheart

I was browsing the Cedar Valley Humane Society's website and came across a litter of gorgeous puppies. There was a particular one we had our sights set on, but he had already found a home by the time we arrived. Only one of the siblings was available, the only fawn one AJ, now Onyxof the otherwise black brindle bunch. He peeped at us with big brown googly eyes and a tennis ball in his mouth.

Who would've guessed this shy guy would turn out to be quite the character! All throughout our neighborhood, children and senior citizens alike ask to pet him or give him cookies on our long daily strolls. Our garbage man always makes a stop on his route to play! Perhaps our boy entices them with his good manners and lovely prance.

Onyx (formerly named "AJ") is very affectionate, showering us with hugs and kisses and has yet to find a person or even a fang-bearing stray cat he doesn't like. He is the epitome of the great potential in a pit bull: loving, sociable, and majestic. Despite his extreme (at times) energy and aspirations to become a canine garbage disposal (his only fault... blame puppyhood), I am overjoyed that we found each other. I have learned about many obstacles this breed faces in our society, whether prejudice, homelessness, exploitation, etc., and it is more the reason to adore them, educate ourselves about them, and fight for them!

My once shoe-sized companion is now comparable to a baby elephant in stature, but he is still a goofy, ever-curious sweetheart who still attempts to scramble his big furry bum into my lap. He was originally named for the gemstone for his beautiful black mask, and he has turned out to be strong as a rock!

Whenever appropriate, I voice my opinion on considering adoption first, as well as pit bull advocacy. Whether due to poor circumstances, ignorance, or just sheer unawareness of the requirements to be a pit parent, it seems that this type of dog is quite populous in some shelters. Regardless, every animal there is a uniquely precious gem, just like Onyx.

Palka P.
