Featured Feline:
Muffin

Muffin the cat
Muffin came into our care almost a year ago because her owner was moving and couldn't keep her. She is good with kids, but can be a little timid of younger ones because of their unpredictable behavior. She loves laps, and all the holding and petting that goes along with them! This affectionate little couch potato can be a little shy, so give her some time to get to know you! Muffin is one of our Lonely Hearts Cats, so you can adopt her for only $45!

Compatible Canine:
Mikey

Mikey the dog
Mikey is a very sweet girl who loves attention. She has a lot of energy, so she would really enjoy a fence-in backyard to play in. She knows how to sit, but she would benefit from some obedience training. With training, she could be an excellent jogging partner! She is very strong, so we recommend that there are no small children in the home. Stop in and meet her today!

Bob with Cocker Spaniel #10Fantastic news!

Twelve of the cocker spaniels rescued from Sac County are ready for adoption! It has been quite a journey for these dogs, and now they are ready for the final leg: to go to a forever home.

Starting tomorrow, the cocker spaniels will be in our adoption area, so we invite you to come in, meet the dogs, and see if one might be right for you. If you decide that you would like to adopt one of these sweeties, it is essential that you come to the cocker spaniel special adoption event this Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. In order to make it fair for everyone, we will not accept any adoption applications for the cocker spaniels before this event; if you like, though, you may take an application, fill it out, and bring it in with you Saturday evening.

I would like to take a moment once again to thank you for supporting us as we help these cocker spaniels recover from their ordeal. It is obvious to me that Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities are full of animal lovers, and we are very fortunate to have the support of wonderful, caring people like you.

Together, we can make a difference-

Cocker Spaniel Special Adoption Event

Now for the moment you've all been waiting for: the cocker spaniel special adoption event!

Marty the cocker spanielTwelve of the rescued cocker spaniels will be up for adoption on Saturday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m. at the shelter.

You MUST attend the event if you want a chance to adopt one of these cocker spaniels. You will be given up to 12 tickets, to be dropped into jars corresponding to each cocker spaniel. (No more than one ticket per household may be dropped into a jar.) Three tickets will be drawn from each jar; each of those parties will be asked to fill out an application.

The application from the first person drawn from each jar will be evaluated for fit by Cedar Valley Humane Society adoption Ben the cocker spanielcounselors. If that application is approved, that particular dog will go home with that family. If the first party is not a good match, then the second party's application will be evaluated; and then the third, if necessary.

Our plan is to send the dogs home with their new forever families that night, so we want to make sure that everyone interested in adopting one is prepared for that possibility! A care package consisting of a collar, leash, dog food, dog toy, and blanket will be sent home with each cocker spaniel.

You are required to bring the following to the special adoption event:
  • A copy of your lease if you are a renter.
  • A copy of the veterinary records for every animal in your home. All animals currently in the home must be up-to-date on their vaccinations or the adoption application will be denied.
  • If there are other dogs present in the home, you must bring the dogs to the adoption event so the cocker spaniel can meet your dogs in the presence of our staff behaviorist. If the staff behaviorist decides that the dogs' behavior indicates compatibility issues, then the application will be denied and the next in line will be considered.
Adoption applications submitted without the necessary supporting Reno the cocker spanieldocumentation will be denied. Applications may be completed in advance and brought to the adoption event. No applications will be accepted prior to the event. Applications are available at www.cvhumane.org, or you may stop in and pick up an application at the shelter.

The Wednesday before the event the cocker spaniels will be moved into the adoption area. We encourage you stop on in and get to know the dogs before the adoption event.

If you have any questions, please call (319) 362-6288 and talk to one of our adoption counselors.

How do your pets like to snuggle with you?

Nicole French: My two cats love to cuddle day and night! When I cuddle up with a book my kitties like to cuddle up right between me and my book...or even better, ON TOP of the book! They are very lovey boys.

John Wiedenheft: Our Lab likes to lay at our feet when we're on the couch. No big kid bed for him though! He'd take up all the room!

Julie Morris: I woke up one morning and my Frenchie had his front paws under my neck and his head on my neck. It was like having a big scarf on! Usually his favorite spot to snuggle is on top of my legs.

Sarah Schultz Dollmeyer: Under the covers by my feet.

Happy Tail: Olliver and Abigail Complete the Family

The day we went to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, my husband and I were anticipating adopting a kitten, but of course we were open to anything else. As I walked through the door, straight ahead of us were two 6-year-old overweight kitties, Olliver and Abigail (who we found out were brother and sister). Our heart instantly melted. I Olliver and Abigail napping with family member opened the cage, and Olliver instantly laid down on his back waiting for his belly to be rubbed. We knew we just had to have them. It was just meant to be!

I was expecting my children (Abigail and Olliver) to hide when we took them home for at least a couple days. My husband and I prepared for that and made a pact to make sure we gave them their space to warm up to our place. NOT THE CASE AT ALL!! They hid for maybe ten minutes tops! In 11 minutes, they were already coming up to us and rubbing their wet noses on us, begging for attention! To our relief, they instantly warmed up to us and felt right at home!

Ollie (Olliver) has, has, HAS to be in physical contact with us AT ALL TIMES if he is in the same room as us. He absolutely has to be sitting next to us, lying on our lap, or being petted if we are around. He loves to lie on his back and have his belly rubbed. When I walk to the bedroom, he darts past me and jumps on my bed; he instantly lies down on his back, belly exposed, ready to be petted. When I head back to the living room, again he darts to the couch and assumes the same position. You know how cats clean their faces off with their paws? Well, if you pet Olliver and give him your undivided attention, he starts getting so excited with being petted, he literally starts petting himself with his paw on his face like that! He really is the sweetest boy, and I bet their owner was absolutely heartbroken to have to put these guys up for adoption.

Abigail is perfect. Just perfect. She does this thing where she starts howling loud with a sock or toy in her mouth and when she finds us she will drop her "gift" at our feet! Sometimes they get so friendly that we have to unfortunately lock them out of our bedroom at night (not all the time though) and when we get up and open the door there will be a line of "presents" at the door! It's the cutest thing ever! I googled what this means, and it says that cats do that to their owners to show gratitude. So we know these guys are SO grateful to have us, as we are to have them! Abigail also does this thing where when she gets super-excited to see you, she literally does a somersault! She'll just stop in her tracks and tumble on to your feet. It's the cutest ever!

I now feel like these guys have completed our life. They are absolutely PERFECT, and everything we've ever wanted! They are our children for sure and we love them so much. Thank you Cedar Valley Humane Society for giving me the last puzzle piece to make our family complete! I can't imagine my life without them! Thank you so much for taking care of our children until we were able to find them and pick them up! Thank you thank you THANK YOU!

Jes and Adam D.
