Patches

Patches
Patches is a very mellow cat who has been in our care for more than a year. She is very tidy and looks after herself as if she knows how pretty she is! She likes to be petted and would make a perfect companion for someone who lives in a quiet home. Patches is one of our Lonely Hearts Cats, so you can bring her into your home for only $45!

Caramel

Caramel
Caramel came to us as a stray in early January. She can be very lovey, but also kind of shy, so take your time to get to know her. She has a lot of energy, so a fenced-in backyard would be a big plus! She does tend to jump, so plan on a little obedience training. (Rewarding good behavior goes a long way!) She also needs to be the only pet in the home. Stop in and meet this gorgeous girl today

Bob with Cocker Spaniel #10Happy Valentine's Day!

February is the month of love, and I want to take a minute to thank all of you who have shown us the love over the past few weeks!

So much has happened in that time. We offered refuge to 15 cocker spaniels that had been kept in stacked crates in filthy conditions, part of an 88-dog rescue operation in Sac County. The dogs have been in our care since January 25.

This past Friday, we had a huge success: the former commercial breeder signed ownership of the dogs over to us. We can now provide more in-depth medical care for the dogs and prepare them for adoption. These dogs will NEVER be forced to live like that again!

Another happy event: on Sunday, one of the rescued cocker spaniels had six puppies! Momma and pups are all doing fine. (It will be at least eight weeks before the pups and their mom can be adopted into a loving home.)

From the moment they came into the world, these puppies have been cared for as if they were family. These puppies will know only love. They will NEVER be forced to suffer like their momma was--matted with feces, confined, and made to breed continuously.

Yes, February IS the month of love, and there's a lot of it to go around. All the cocker spaniels are now being showered with the love and care they deserve. And as soon as they are ready, they will begin the next phase of their lives with loving families.

Together, we can make a difference-

P.S. If you haven't had a chance yet to help us with the medical expenses for the Sac County cocker spaniels, please take a moment to show us some love! If you've already donated, thanks for helping us make a huge difference in these dogs' lives. We couldn't do it without you!

Get Your Pet Microchipped

fingers holding microchipNow is a great time to get your furry pal microchipped!

We're holding a microchip clinic at PetCo, 1450 Twixt Town Road in Marion, on February 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The price is right--just $35.

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, and it's implanted between your pet's shoulder blades. The procedure is relatively painless, similar to receiving a shot. If your pet is lost, the person who finds him can bring him to any vet clinic or shelter to be scanned. The unique microchip number will be traced back to you, and you can be happily reunited.

There's no appointment necessary as the clinic is on a first come, first served basis. So stop in at PetCo this Saturday and get it done!

It's Almost Time for Whine & Wags!

We Asked, You Answered!

Word has it that Americans will spend $17.5 billion on Valentine's Day gifts! Are you spending any of that on your pets?

CountryGirl Ashley: Every year before my dog passed away I would buy him a giant bone and a new collar for V-Day. This is the first V-Day without him that I can remember. RIP Spazzy :'( ♥

Michael Albee: I bought her a big bag of Beggin' Strips and put a big red ribbon on it.... Then I went to the refrigerator and took out some bacon (the maple kind)... then, I ate it! (awwwwwh) Seriously, she's a dog...she has no concept of V-Day, B-Day or any other day. She just wants to hang out and do whatever she can to be a part of our lives. And that's what makes her happy.

Sally Schick: My fur babies are more spoiled than my husband. =)

Volunteer Spotlight: Chris Sedar

hand and paw Cornell College student Chris Sedar came to us to do an internship. Over the past few months, Chris put in more than 165 hours at the shelter. He worked very hard and was always willing to help with anything and everything!

Even though Chris has completed his internship, he still pops in every now and then to help out. In fact, Chris gave us a hand the night the cocker spaniels arrived from Sac County. Hats off to you, Chris! The time you have given our shelter sweeties was invaluable, and we appreciate that you are still willing to come out and pitch in!

Happy Tail: Eight-Year-Old FiFi Makes Loving Pet

FiFi joined my household last fall. She had been surrendered by her elderly owner who could no longer care for her. FiFi had been at the Eight-year-old FiFiCedar Valley Humane Society for many months. Why? Was it because she was eight years old? As you can see by her picture, she is one beautiful girl, so I don't know why she was passed up.

I became the lucky one. FiFi is loving and a total joy to have around. I'm sure that FiFi and I will have many wonderful years together. Please consider "mature" cats when thinking about adoption. They can make a great addition to your family!

I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive.
