Featured Feline: Theison
Theison was brought to us at the end of September because he wasn't getting along with the other cats in the household. He seems to get along fine with the cats here, but we still recommend that he be the only pet in the home. This sweetie loves to be picked up -- you can tell because his purr-motor gets going. It's loud and doesn't stop! He loves his tummy rubs, too. Come meet him. Maybe he's the kiddo you've been looking for! |

Compatible Canine: Binx
Binx came into our care in mid-January because his family just couldn't keep him. He is a funny, lovable Cockapoo who is great with children. He is both laidback and playful -- he loves to fetch balls! (Won't necessarily give them back to you, though!) This sweet boy is crate-trained and well-mannered. He's not too sure about other dogs, though. He would make a great apartment pet -- he's just the right size and has just the right personality! |

Greetings!
Eliminating cruelty, abuse and overpopulation of animals.
It's what we do.
So when a sister animal welfare organization reached out to us and asked if we would accept 15 Cocker Spaniels from an 88-dog rescue operation they were conducting in Sac County, we didn't hesitate to say "Absolutely!"
It's what we do.
Needless to say, it's been a hectic week. The Cocker Spaniels are on the mend, but they have a long journey ahead. Ear, eye, skin, and gum infections. Tumors, cysts, and decaying teeth. And even after we treat their medical conditions, they will have a long way to go before they can be adopted...after all, these dogs have never known what it's like to be part of a loving family.
They've never snuggled with a child in front of the TV. They've never walked in a city park, sniffing the crisp air and romping in snow. They've never waited patiently under a dining room table, waiting for the inevitable pea or cooked carrot.
They have no idea how to be part of a family.
It's our job to help them learn. It's what we do. And we couldn't do it without you.
When I say "Together, we can make a difference," I mean it. It's only with your support that this organization can fulfill its mission and help dogs like Reno (aka Cocker Spaniel number 9) and all of the animals in need in Linn County and beyond.
Together, we can make a difference-
Bob Citrullo Executive Director P.S. If you've already donated toward the Sac County Cocker Spaniels' medical care, we thank you! If you haven't, we want you to know that even $5 would help us buy antibiotics to treat their infections. Please take a moment to donate now. |

Last Day to Register for W(h)acky Wedding!
Reserve your spot at Whacked at da Wedding, our February fundraiser! (Today is the final day you can register!) The comedy whodunit dinner theatre takes place this Saturday, February 4, at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center, 525 33rd St. SW in Cedar Rapids. Cash bar opens at 6pm; dinner and show begin at 7pm. Tickets are $60, and guests will have their choice of roast beef or vegetarian lasagna. Here's da plan: Come to the Manicotti/Gelatto wedding, and you're sure to die of laughter! Will this union bring peace in da family? Does the bride's father, Tony "the Hair" Gelatto, really approve of the marriage of his daughter Gina? What secrets might Gina try to keep? Will the groom Rico's efforts to hide his true profession come back to bite him? Mama Mia is sure vocal about her feelings, but might she also be driven to murder? Nicco, the best man, can't be as innocent as he'd have us believe, can he? Marissa the Mouth has certainly played the field lately. Perhaps she's desperate for more than love? Perhaps one of the other "family members" will get Whacked at da Wedding! In lieu of wedding gifts, Gina and Rico are requesting guests bring an item from the Cedar Valley Humane Society wish list. Guests will have an opportunity to pose for a "wedding" photo with one of our adoptable animals. (A 4x6 photo is only $10!) We'll also offer valet parking for a minimum $5 donation, as well as a chance to purchase a ticket and win in our 50/50 raffle. Register now! To reserve a table for eight, or for more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org. All proceeds benefit the nearly 2,000 homeless, neglected, and abused animals -- including the Sac County Cocker Spaniels -- that seek refuge at the Cedar Valley Humane Society each year. |

We Asked, You Answered!
How do you define "responsible pet owner"?
Rochelle Lynn Sparks: We have pets to enrich our lives, give us companionship, help calm us, so like any great relationship we give back what they desire, the same.
Roxanne Joy Balvanz: Someone who does not let their animal live outside. Animal adoption is about adding a member to your family...not about a furry lawn ornament. The whole "he/she is an outside dog" is a myth. Of all of the breeds out there, only a very small select few do actually like to live outside! Put yourselves in their paws, would you wanna be stuck outside looking in only to see all the fun you're missing out on?
Stacey L Rogers: Treats their pets as they would wish to be treated themselves. And don't forget to spay/neuter!

Volunteer Spotlight: Corey Ulferts and Mackenzie Yarringten
Corey Ulferts and Mackenzie Yarringten have been coming to the shelter roughly twice a week to help our dogs burn off some of that pent-up energy! The snow hasn't slowed these two down a bit! No matter the weather or temperature, they stop by and take dogs outside for playtime. Thanks, you two. We love seeing you come out so often to help our little (and big!) woofers get outside, get some lovin', and have some fun. It's volunteers like you who make a dog's stay with us just that much more enjoyable! |

Happy Tail: Lexi Snuggles with Stuffed Friend
I've been meaning to write a cat tale about our yellow tabby, Lexi, who we adopted from the Cedar Valley Humane Society in May of 2005.
We'd been without an animal friend around our house for nine months after the death of our 16-year-old Lab, and I decided it was time to remedy that. Since we'd always had dogs through the years I decided maybe we should try getting a cat for a house pet this time, so I started visiting the cat room at CVHS.
There were so many lovely fur-balls who'd poke their paw through their cages, wanting to be friends with me. I had to touch every paw extended, and I spent time holding many of them. There were so many choices, but there was one little cat who never poked her paw through at me. She turned her back to everything going on in the room and slept. This bothered me. I read her cage log; she'd come in 3 months earlier with two siblings--both of them had since been adopted.
I worried that her spirit was broken, a thought that was unacceptable to me. She'd purr when I reached in and pet her, though, and I made several trips back to the shelter to sit and rock with her. She'd snuggle against my shoulder willingly--and purr. She was an expert purr-er, and I knew I'd found the cat I'd take home.
The shelter had nicknamed her Acorn. My husband and I renamed her Lexi.
Over the past 6 years Lexi has gotten her spirit back. She plays like a wild kitty when we roll her mouse toys in "kitty marijuana" as we call it (cat nip, of course!). She lives for her bird watching duties from her perch by the kitchen window, and she loves to be outside with us (on her leash, of course) when we enjoy porch time. She is entirely too good at eating grass and hissing at the neighbor's cat who comes over wanting to be her friend.
Lexi loves to take her naps on top of many of the stuffed animal friends in the spare bedrooms, and insists on TV-watching lap time with either my husband or me every evening.
She was meant to come into our lives.
Rebecca and Wayne G.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
