Featured Feline: Nadia
Nadia came to us as a stray at the end of May. This sweet snuggle-buddy loves to be petted. She'll come right up to you and ask for loving. When you hold her, she rubs on your chin and purrs like crazy! Nadia gets along well with other cats, so if you're looking for a feline friend for your cat, she might be the one! |
Compatible Canine: Bentley
Bentley's family was moving and couldn't keep him. He has been in our care since the end of December. Bentley is just the sweetest dog, and he would make a great family pet. He is social and well-mannered, but he still has a lot of puppy in him. (He tends to jump, but it's nothing a little training won't fix!) He loves squeaky toys and he's very food-motivated, so we think he would be a dream to train. (He already knows how to sit.) He gets along great with kids, cats, and other dogs. Come meet Bentley today. |
Please come visit me and my friends! Monday-Friday: 12pm-7pm Saturday and Sunday: 12pm-5pm

Greetings!
Every once in a while, we hear people remark about their "tax dollars at work" when they visit our shelter. I'd like to take a moment to shed some light on this misconception.
Your tax dollars do a lot of wonderful and necessary things, but they don't support this organization. The Cedar Valley Humane Society is a local nonprofit organization that does not receive any state or federal funding. And, even though we are a humane society, we don't receive any funding from the Humane Society of the United States or any other national organization.
That's why fundraising events-- and your donations!-- are very important to us. Without your support, we couldn't help Stella and Yoda and Pidgey and Muffin and Cricket and... well, the list goes on and on.
Nearly 2,000 animals come through our doors every year, and their care is not funded with your tax dollars. Their care is paid for by generous donations from the community. From people just like you.
Together, we can make a difference-
Bob Citrullo Executive Director P.S. If you are a donor, thank you for your generosity! If you haven't yet donated, perhaps because you didn't realize how important you are to the health and well-being of our homeless animals, please take a moment to donate now. |

Whacked: Deadline Extended!
We've extended the registration deadline for Whacked at da Wedding, our February fundraiser. The comedy whodunit dinner theatre takes place on Saturday, February 4, at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center, 525 33rd St. SW in Cedar Rapids. Registration has been extended to January 31. Cash bar opens at 6pm; dinner and show begin at 7pm. Tickets are $60, and guests will have their choice of roast beef or vegetarian lasagna. Here's da plan: Come to the Manicotti/Gelatto wedding, and you're sure to die of laughter! Will this union bring peace in da family? Does the bride's father, Tony "the Hair" Gelatto, really approve of the marriage of his daughter Gina? What secrets might Gina try to keep? Will the groom Rico's efforts to hide his true profession come back to bite him? Mama Mia is sure vocal about her feelings, but might she also be driven to murder? Nicco, the best man, can't be as innocent as he'd have us believe, can he? Marissa the Mouth has certainly played the field lately. Perhaps she's desperate for more than love? Perhaps one of the other "family members" will get Whacked at da Wedding! In lieu of wedding gifts, Gina and Rico are requesting guests bring an item from the Cedar Valley Humane Society wish list. Guests will have an opportunity to pose for a "wedding" photo with one of our adoptable animals. (A 4x6 photo is only $10!) We'll also offer valet parking for a minimum $5 donation, as well as a chance to purchase a ticket and win in our 50/50 raffle. Register today! To reserve a table for eight, or for more information, contact Jan Clarke at (319) 362-6288 or jan.clarke@cvhumane.org. All proceeds benefit homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. |
We Asked, You Answered!
How does your pet react to strangers?
Michael Lena Posthuma: Both our cats hide, but then after a while one by one they come out and start to act like themselves. :)
Nicole Christenson: She loves everyone. If she could go home with all of them, she would.
Erin Young-Surrett: The dog jumps, then gets scolded and occasionally pees on the floor or runs to his kennel. The rats reach their bodies out as far as they can to sniff the stranger. If they aren't impressed, they run up my arm to my neck.
David Morse: Arthur is tentative, will sniff you out, let you pet but still squirrely if you try to pick him up.

Volunteer Spotlight: Nicole and Ryan French
Nicole and Ryan French adopted a pair of cats from us not too long ago. After that, they decided to volunteer! They started by helping at the Tree of Hope event at PetCo. Recently, they picked up a shift at PetSmart cleaning our cat condos. They also come out to the shelter to help with animal care and dog walking. Thanks, Nicole and Ryan! Our adoptable animals benefit from your kindness! |
Happy Tail: Ellary Completes Puppy Kindergarten
We wanted to take this opportunity to send a picture of our happy family and tell you about how Ellary (formerly Gina) is doing. We adopted Ellary from your shelter in August 2011. Ironically, I also adopted my other dog, Eli (formerly Sparky), from your shelter in June 2001. Eli is turning 11 this year. Ellary is doing great! She is a very happy, affectionate, and well-behaved puppy. We already completed puppy kindergarten and are looking forward to taking more obedience and agility classes in the future.
We want to thank you for all you do for the animals in our area. Also, to thank you for giving me the opportunity to adopt such wonderful dogs. Eli and Ellary are the best dogs ever and I am so happy that I chose to adopt from your shelter!
Thanks! Stacie, Eli and Ellary M.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
