Featured Feline:
Mia

Mia
Mia came into our care in mid-June because her family could no longer care for her. She gets along well with other cats and will curl up with them for a snooze. She likes to be held, but it may take a little while for her to warm up to you because she gets a little skittish when she's moved from place to place. Patience is the key! Mia has the most lovely liquid gold eyes that we have ever seen.
Compatible Canine:
Mufasa

Mufasa the dog
When Mufasa came into our care as a stray in mid-November, he was very thin. We have put some meat on his bones, and he is still gaining weight nicely. Mufasa has a very sunny disposition and a lot of love to give. He is very people-oriented, and he craves attention. This happy-go-lucky fellow will greet you at the door when you come home. How could you resist his unconditional love?

Greetings!

I'm excited to invite you to our Holiday Open House!

Kira Layli will be on hand, drawing caricatures of you, your kids, your pets...whatever you would like! She can draw from photos or Shepherd caricature by Kira Layli"real life," so feel free to bring your pet to the shelter for a one-of-a-kind, personalized holiday gift. (Black and white caricatures are $5, and color renderings are $10.) She can draw your pet "as is," or deck him out with holiday embellishments--a Santa hat, a candy cane, gift wrap--your choice! Kira is a very talented local artist, and we're happy to have her join us for this special event.

If you haven't had a chance to sit for a holiday photo yet, not to worry! Photographer Heidi Hansen will be available to take holiday photos of you with your pet. A 5x7 photo will cost $10, and it's sure to be a joyful memory of the season.

It all happens this Sunday from 2 to 5pm! So stop on in and have a cookie and cup of good cheer! I can't wait to meet you!

Wishing you and yours a safe and warm holiday-

Donate at PETCO's Tree of Hope

PETCO storefrontShop for your furry, scaly, and finny friends at PETCO in Marion this holiday season, and round up your purchase to donate to the Cedar Valley Humane Society!

You can round up to the nearest dollar...or keep rounding up, up, up! PETCO has fun stars that you can purchase for $5, $10, or $20 and post in their doorway to show your support for our shelter sweeties. It's an easy way to be a superstar and make a big difference in the lives of homeless animals in Linn County.

Donation stars at PETCOYou can also meet a few of our adoptable animals between 10am-1pm every weekend. Our volunteers are at the store with different animals and fun activities every Saturday and Sunday, so stop by and visit with them.

FYI, when you pay for your purchase with your VISA card, VISA will match your donation. (The match money goes to the PETCO Foundation, not directly to us, but the PETCO Foundation offers grants to help shelters around the nation--including us--and that's a very good thing!)

PETCO's Tree of Hope continues through January 1, 2012, so you can donate early and donate often!

A HUGE thanks to PETCO for choosing us as their Tree of Hope recipient this year. And a HUGE thanks to you for your support!

Does your pet have a BFF outside of your home?

Michael Albee: My dog has 3 doggie bff's and 4 human bff's. She goes into a "happy dance" everytime she sees them!

Kim Daub: My dog has a couple of BFF's. One is my nephew Gryphon. They like to play video games and run. Last week when my friends Wendy and Kobe were in Colorado for a visit she ditched me for them -- over a cheesy puff!!!

Denise Gisvold: My Cannon absolutely adores his Grandma and Grandpa....he is ecstatic when he gets to go there or they come to my house.

Volunteer Spotlight: Gidget and Katie Hagmeier

hand and pawGidget and Katie Hagmeier have been helping the Cedar Valley Humane Society with the Tree of Hope, a month-and-a-half-long donation event at PETCO. The last time they were at the store, they helped to get one of our kitties adopted! They also walked around the store selling raffle tickets to customers, coming back with donation after donation. This mother/daughter team does a fabulous job, and we are lucky to have them. Thank you, Gidget and Katie, for jumping in where needed, and doing a wonderful job doing it!

Happy Tail: Gizmo (now Sassy) Helps Heal Family

My son and I are wondering, "Who rescued who?"

Gizmo (now named Sassy...by my son, who did not care that the cat was a boy!) is the most wonderful gift we could've given ourselves. We call him the "catdog." Sassy is very affectionate, friendly, clean, and healthy.
Gizmo, now Sassy
We are pet people. After the death of my husband, we recently sold our home with a yard and went condo. Empty without a pet. After several trips to the Cedar Valley Humane Society to visit the pets, we waited to choose the right one. I guess Sassy chose us.

After chatting with the volunteer who was sitting petting the cats one day said, "There is your sign," we left and came back another day and adopted "our sign." I knew that I had fallen in love with this cat when one day when I was crying, he came up to me, wrapped his paws around my neck, and licked my tears away, letting me know he was here and it was going to be okay. Or maybe he was thanking me. Needless to say, I am sorry for the person who found no time for such a loving creature, and happy that we found him. My four-year-old son always says, "Mom, Sassy loves me!"

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!
