Featured Feline:
Louscion

Louscion
Louscion and Leonardo came to us together at the end of March because their owner was no longer able to care for them. Louscion is a free spirit who usually does his own thing. He likes to run free, but when he wants lovin', he'll come to you for it. This boy likes his food, for sure! He likes to to be called Louie for short. Come meet him and Leonardo today! With our TwoFur Felines program, you can adopt Louscion for $90 and get Leonardo FREE!
Compatible Canine:
Wess

Wess
Wess came to us from another shelter at the end of September. He would make a great family dog, as he is awesome with kids and other dogs. This big galoot is very gentle and social. He has great manners, and knows how to sit and shake. Stop in and meet Wess today!

Greetings!

I've been in the Cedar Rapids area for just over a month, and I already appreciate how important a sense of commExecutive director Bob Citrullo and shelter cat Himmyunity is to local residents. It's important to us at the Cedar Valley Humane Society, too.

Part of our mission is to reach out and educate people about subjects involving companion animals, such as spaying and neutering to prevent pet overpopulation; pet safety for preschoolers and elementary-age children; and emergency first aid for pets.

As our organization grows, we plan to increase the amount of community outreach that we do. If you know of any opportunities, please let us know. We're always looking to further the cause.

Together we can make a difference-

Get Crazy and Creative for Pet-O-Ween!

Now's the time to get crazy and create a costume for your favorite furbaby! Theisen's 9th annual Pet-O-Ween is First Place 2010coming up fast--and it's bigger and better than ever before.

This year, Pet-O-Ween will be held at BOTH Theisen's locations in Cedar Rapids: 3111 16th Avenue SW and 1800 51st St. NE. Registration is at 10 a.m., and the contest itself begins at 1 p.m.

All pets are welcome--from kitschy kittens and decked-out dogs to princess-y ponies and glam hamsters! Celebrity judges will be on hand to choose the best costume.

Want some inspiration? Sneak a peek at last year's winners! We had some genuinely imaginative costumes in 2010, including a giant handbag, a tossed salad, and Oscar the Grouch. (And more...oh, SO much more!)

So, deck out your furry friend and join the fun! If you're not feeling particularly creative, just stop in for an eyeful of goofy. You'll be supporting a great cause, because--that's right!--all proceeds benefit the homeless animals at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

We Asked, You Answered!

What is your pet's worst habit?

James Michael Naylor: My cat Roo seems to think my shorts are a substitute litter box.

Susan Harthun: Jumping on my kitchen table and eating the food (or my son's just decorated birthday cake).

Abby Stewart: Licking! Arms, face, couch, bones, cats, windows, walls.... you get the point... till we MAKE him stop!

Amanda Marie Sorel: Farting when we have company....lol.

Kevin J Railsback: We taught Sasha, our little schnoodle rescue, to ring a bell when she wants to go outside. Little did we know she loves the outside, so every half hour we hear the bells ring on some days. If she doesn't get a response, she rings the bells louder. If still no response, you'd swear those bells were going to fall off the string, she bats them so hard.

Nicky Lerma: Our Jack Russell likes to bury all her treats and chewies. Not outside, but inside. I get tired of finding rawhides under my pillow and under the rug in the bathroom!

Jessica Fox : My dog can NOT stay out of the cat box... YUCK!!!!

Volunteer Spotlight: Gretchen Sealls and Phyllis Griswold

hand and pawGretchen Sealls and Phyllis Griswold are a dynamic duo! At first they volunteered to help clean our adoption cat rooms one to two mornings a week; then they expanded to three days. Gretchen and Phyllis have also recruited their husbands to come in and help from time to time, as well. Together they all care for the cats, organize, fold laundry...the works! Thanks, Phyllis and Gretchen, for being so giving! Our kitties' lives have been bettered because of you.

Happy Tail: Richy (and Richard's Memory) Still Going Strong

Richy was adopted from the Cedar Valley Humane Society in the fall of 2003. RichyI had recently lost a favorite cat and was quite disheartened. My ailing father, in his last months, insisted I get another pet. We both came to the Cedar Valley Humane Society and found this wonderful, calm, yet somewhat feisty, cat. We decided he would be a great fit for me, and I brought him home. I named the cat Richy in honor of my father, whose name was Richard.

All these years later, Richy is very healthy and happy. He is between 11 and 12 years old, but he still has plenty of energy. He receives good health reviews at his regular check-ups. He has been a treasured companion full of life, warmth, and still has some serious feistiness and playfulness to his personality. He is also a constant, wonderful memory of my father.

Remember, YOU can
