Featured Feline: Lilly
Lilly has been waiting for a forever home for more than a year now! She was brought to us in July 2010 because her owner could no longer afford her. She is a sweet and loving cat who enjoys being around people. She would do well in a household with children of any age and other cats. She likes to be held and petted and will occasionally come up onto your lap. She plays very gently, and her favorite toys are balls and fuzzy mice. She's also a catnip kinda girl! She's such a good girl, we can't believe she's been in our care for so long! Won't you come in and meet her? She might be exactly right for your family! |

Compatible Canine: Handsome
Handsome was a stray who came to us in early August. He is a strong, exuberant fellow who loves to play. This happy boy really enjoys attention. When he's not asking for love from you, or playing, he has his nose to the ground exploring! Stop in and meet this sweet boy today! |

Greetings!
I am delighted to be the new Executive Director of the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
Throughout the years, I have developed a great passion for animal welfare. After retiring from the military, I chose the field of animal welfare as my full-time career. Most recently I was the Executive Director for an all-feline shelter in Louisiana. Prior to that, I held leadership positions with Humane Societies in Mississippi and Georgia, as well as the Arizona Humane Society in Phoenix, where I was responsible for placing over 23,000 animals each year.
My wife, Debbie, and I, along with our dogs, Gunner and Ivy, are thrilled to be in Cedar Rapids. I look forward to working with our community and our wonderful staff and volunteers who are so dedicated to our lifesaving efforts.
Together we can make a difference-

We Asked, You Answered!
Where does your pet sleep at night?
Courtney McMurrin: All 5 of my dogs sleep in bed with me. And they are not small by any means. You could say my bed gets quite crowded.
Heather Simmons: My bunny sleeps on top of his pink house at night and my kitty snuggles in my bed with me.
Amy Overbey: We have three kitties - Bella is Miss Independent and goes where she wishes. Bristol is our newest little rescued kitten and sometimes sleeps with us and sometimes in the guest bedroom. Beau is our 7-year-old tabby, and he usually sleeps on my face.
Stephanie Learned: All three in my bed! We got a king-size bed so my boyfriend and I could have more room...nope, the dogs have more room. We have the same amount as we did with our queen! lol

Volunteer Spotlight: Lena and Michael Posthuma
Lena and Michael Posthuma are two extremely enthusiastic volunteers! They come in and clean the cat adoption rooms--nearly every day!--but they don't stop there. After the adoption rooms are clean, they turn their attention to nearly every room in the building, finding things that need to be done and doing them!
In addition, they recently assisted us by transporting two dogs to rescue. Their spirit of helpfulness, attentive care, and selfless dedication make them a joy to be around. Thanks, Lena and Michael, for taking such great care of our shelter animals! |

Happy Tail: Chloe (now Dazie) Captures Hearts
My husband and I were looking to adopt a Dachshund. His parents had always had Dachshunds, and he is quite partial to and knowledgeable about the breed.
When five-week-old Chloe, a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix, arrived at the Cedar Valley Humane Society, we agreed to foster her until she was old enough to be put up for adoption. One day was all it took for this adorable little bundle to capture our hearts and insert herself into our lives. Her name is now Dazie. We renamed her after just one day, as we knew she would have to be part of our lives from then on. The day she turned eight weeks old we signed the adoption papers and made her a part of our family. She is the center of our world. Our children are all grown, and she was EXACTLY what we needed. My husband, Tracy, is obviously her "person," but Dazie is more than willing to spend time with Momma, too.
We now host puppy parties and everyone has a good time, puppies and people alike. The puppies (and older dogs too) keep everyone in stitches with their antics!
Dazie is definitely a perfect fit for our family, and we are so grateful that we were lucky enough to have her come into our lives. We could NOT love her more!
Deb L.
Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
