Featured Feline: Himmy (aka Hemmi)
Himmy was brought back to us because the family's baby was allergic to him. Himmy is a very happy cat who loves to be held and petted, especially on his belly and under his chin. He had a little trouble getting used to the family's cat and the baby, so it might be best if he were an only cat in a home with older children. He is a lovey-dovey boy, so we know that there's a perfect family for him. Maybe it's yours! |

Compatible Canine: Zeus
Zeus came into our care as a stray in mid-April. He is shy but very sweet when he warms up to you. He is still a puppy, but he seems to be past most of the destructive puppy behavior. Zeus is a very playful boy, but we do require that he go to a home without young children. Children older than 12 would be acceptable. |

Cedar Valley Humane Society PetFix is in Full Swing!
We've rolled out our low-cost, high-quality spay/neuter program for pets of owners on income assistance.
Word has definitely gotten out about Cedar Valley Humane Society PetFix, as we've already qualified 12 animals in the program's first month of operation. Interest has been high, confirming the need for this program in our communities. Cedar Valley Humane Society PetFix is just one way that our organization is working to solve the pet overpopulation problem in Linn County. The program is funded by the Community Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation and The Gerald T. Knox Donor-Advised Fund of The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.
If you know someone on income assistance who might qualify for Cedar Valley Humane Society PetFix, don't delay! The program is limited to 30 animals, so have them contact us today. |

We Asked, You Answered!
How does your pet react to wildlife that crosses his or her path? (Think frogs, moths, chipmunks, etc.)
Vanessa KarmaPolice Reed: My kitty hates other humans, but he loves other animals and bugs. He "caught" a mouse once... and he was nose to nose with it just sniffing it... it was cute.
Sabrena Schroeder: My dog so far has just stared at most wildlife, mesmerized, like squirrels and the geese at the park. But she gets a kick outta catching beetles and junebugs. And likes to run/prance after birds and fireflies. She's only 7 months so that may change. :-)
Camille AllStar Roth: A baby bird fell into my yard last night. My *vicious* pit bull was the only dog in the yard. He ran up to the frightened bird...& poked it with his nose. That's all. He does the same thing to baby bunnies. Not a vicious bone in his body.

Volunteer Spotlight: Lois Yoerger
Lois Yoerger is a real asset to our organization. She has only been volunteering for us for a few months, but she has jumped right in and done an amazing job!
Lois comes in every Thursday afternoon to assist the front desk with a variety of tasks. She also takes pets to Farmer's State Bank for us on a monthly basis. Lois brings spark and joy wherever she goes, and we're so happy she chose to volunteer for us. Thanks, Lois! Your lighthearted attitude makes work fun! |

Happy Tail: Cricket and Fidget Mend Broken Hearts
My husband and I never thought we would be cat lovers, but here we are!
Snickers, our beloved Cocker Spaniel, died this spring at the age of 15 1/2. Our hearts were broken, and my tears kept coming. And then I met Splish and Splash, 12-week-old kittens at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.
In the fall of 2009, we found a kitten alongside the highway. Dirty, hungry and scared. I fell in love with his little face. My husband has been allergic to cats his whole life, so we were only keeping him for a few days, until we could find someplace safe to take him. Almost two years later, I can't imagine our home without Ringo! Thankfully, my husband's allergies have disappeared, because he and Ringo are best buds.
But Ringo and the aging Snickers did not mix well: an energetic, hyper male kitten, and an old, near deaf, near blind, grumpy old lady. So we decided to find Ringo his own buddy to play with. But then Snickers died, and I didn't want to love again.
Enter Splish and Splash!! I met them and their brother Squirt at the Cedar Valley Humane Society. They were so cute and cuddly, and they smelled like cat food. Perfect kittens. I couldn't decide which one to pick, so I had my husband decide.
Now named Cricket and Fidget, they are a wonderful addition to our home. They love their big brother Ringo and they all play well. And Ringo loves them, too. He is playing like a real kitten. He has never had playmates before, so he is learning to be social. It's wonderful for him. I am glad we picked both of them. They keep each other company, play together, sleep together, even use the litter box together!
These cats bring us smiles and laughter every single day. Their antics are so worth everything.
Thank you Cedar Valley Humane Society!
Angel W. Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
