Featured Feline:
Lilo

 Lilo
Lilo was left on our doorstep in the middle of December. She is very shy and laidback, so it may take a little patience to get to know her. Lilo craves attention and likes nothing better than to curl up on a warm lap. She is very talkative and enjoys being brushed. Stop in to meet Lilo-you may just lose yourself in her gorgeous green eyes!
Compatible Canine:
Earl

 Earl
Earl was brought to us because his owner couldn't be home with him enough, and when Earl was left outside by himself, he barked, much to the neighbors' dismay. Well, Earl is only nine months old, so you'll have to expect some puppy behavior! He is a playful, rough-and-tumble pup who is used to a quiet household. He is a little skittish when it comes to loud noises, such as thunder.

SPECIAL ALERT!

Today's Gazette reported that we euthanize stray animals after a three-day holding period. This is NOT correct. By state law, after three business days the animal becomes the property of the Cedar Valley Humane Society. At that time the animal is evaluated for health and behavior and, if possible, made available for adoption. The online article has been corrected, and The Gazette will print a correction in the newspaper tomorrow.

Greetings!

I had hoped to be able to introduce you to my successor, but we are still seeking the right person for the job. As the search continues, Jan Clarke, our Communications Director, will serve as our Interim Executive Director.

Many of you already know Jan, as she has been with our organization since 2009. I am confident in her abilities to carry out the day-to-day operations until a new Executive Director comes on board.

Helping to change the lives of the animals that come through our doors has been the most rewarding work I have ever been involved with. I have grown to think of Cedar Rapids as my home, and I will miss this wonderful community of animal lovers. I wish all the best to each and every one of you. Stay in touch, and let me know if you're ever in Huntsville!

Sharing your love of animals-

Vote for the Cutest Pet, and We Could Get $500!

Help our shelter sweeties and have some fun along the way! TheGazette.com is running a Cutest Pet Photo Contest. Here's how it works!
Zeke, a contestant in the Cutest Pet Photo Contest
Step 1: Submit a photo of your adorable pet at TheGazette.com/petcontest. Photos will be accepted until June 12. (The pet does NOT have to be from the Cedar Valley Humane Society.) The pet with the most votes will win a fabulous prize! (See TheGazette.com for details.) If you don't want to submit a photo, skip to Step 2.

Step 2: VOTE for your favorite pet! Here's where helping our shelter sweeties comes in. For every 200 votes, TheGazette.com and the contest sponsor, Pawsitive Paws Academy, will donate $100 (up to $500) to the Cedar Valley Humane Society! So if we get 1,000 votes, we get $500! It doesn't matter which picture you vote for, as long as the total vote count reaches 1,000. You can vote three times a day until the contest ends on June 23.

So let's get this party started...and VOTE, VOTE, VOTE!

We Asked, You Answered!
speech bubble

How does your dog behave when you meet another dog on a walk?

Lisa Swanson: My 80-pound goldendoodle just about pulls my arm OFF to get to the other dog....sniff sniff...then moves on. The challenge is if I can't let him at the other dog ....then it is almost too much for him to stand, wanting to "say hi." I try to turn around or cross the street. We're working on obedience under exciting circumstances. (Hmm....it's not going well. Heh.)

Elizabeth Carnicle: She's kinda spoiled & possessive & not around other fur babies, so not well.... we're working on this as we would like to adopt another baby down the road. May have to do classes.

Mammadog Klemzak: I ask if we can say hi and if yes, they sniff butts and then go on her way. Not really a playful dog with other dogs. Oh well.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jenna Nagel

Whoa...look out! Jenna Nagel has arrived! Originally from Dunkerton, Iowa, Jenna comes to us from Coe College.

hand and pawVolunteering with us for just a few short months, she pulled out all the stops in April, volunteering 28 hours. She helped with everything! Dogs...cats...and the ever-so-exciting laundry! You name it, she's done it.

Jenna, thanks for being so giving of your time. Your willingness to jump in and do whatever it takes is greatly appreciated!

Happy Tail: Pearl (now Rosie) Learns about Being Part of a Family

Our Rosie (formerly known as Pearl) was one of the 19 Dachshunds given up by a former breeder, and I adopted her because she needed someone who could work with her "handicap." Rosie is severely vision impaired, but she is not blind. She functions quite well with her limitations.
Pearl, now known as Rosie
Rosie's coat has grown in gloriously, and she is the princess of the family. She loves playing with her "big" dogs and my grandchildren, and barking at and teasing the cats. She has learned that lovebirds bite little noses poked into their cages (ow!) and that she needs to be quiet when Mama turns out the lights. The only thing she doesn't like is a thunderstorm. Those are the nights she hides under my covers and whimpers, once I can get her to stop pacing and panting.

She is almost housebroken (that's been fun) and has learned the required obedience commands of sit and come. She walks happily on a leash, if she's going somewhere she wants to. Fortunately, she's small enough to carry when she doesn't want to go. She is such a little character and has won over the hearts of everyone she has met.

We are very glad that I followed my intuition and made that call when I saw the report of the surrender of those dogs. Our little Rosie is a wonderful addition to our big, noisy, happy family.

Sincerely,

Mumsy B.

Remember, YOU can
send us your Happy Tail, too!

In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him.
