Featured Feline:
Penguin

Black and white cat named Penguin
Penguin was found wandering around near Highway 13. All four paws are declawed, so we know he was someone's pet at one time, but no one has claimed him. Penguin is just good company. He likes attention, but he's not too clingy. If you're looking for a steady companion without a lot of drama, Penguin is your kinda guy!
Compatible Canine:
Oliver

Black dog named Oliver
Oliver was brought to us because his family decided that he was not a good fit--he liked to chase their chickens and ducks! Oliver is good with children and dogs, but he tends to chase cats. He's very playful and would make a great pet for the right family. That is...a family without chickens. Or ducks.

Greetings!

We put out a call on Facebook for 100 two-pocket folders to be donated to us by January 17. Even though we didn't quite reach our goal, we'd like to thank those who brought us folders this weekend. (We're pretty sure the snowstorm kept people away yesterday.) If you didn't get your folders to us, no worries! We'd still love to have them. Just drop them off during regular office hours. No folders? No problem! If you'd prefer, you can simply donate nowThanks for your generous support!

Microchip Clinic Scheduled

Have you ever worried about losing your pet? Increase the chance of a safe return by getting your furry pal microchipped.

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, and it's implanted between your pet's shoulder blades. The procedure is relatively fingers holding microchippainless, similar to receiving a shot. If your pet is lost, the person who finds him can bring him to any vet clinic or shelter to be scanned. The unique microchip number will be traced back to you, and you will be happily reunited.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society is holding a microchip clinic on February 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the shelter, 7411 Mount Vernon Road SE, Cedar Rapids. The price is right--just $35. There's no appointment necessary as the clinic is on a first come, first served basis. For more information, contact Zach Melton at (319) 362-6288 or zach.melton@cvhumane.org.

We Asked, You Answered!

What adorable thing does your furry friend do to get your attention and a little love when you're busy doing other things?

Elizabeth Carnicle: If I'm sitting she grabs the side of my hand tries to pull me up. If I'm standing she jumps up and hits me in the butt or leg. If I'm on the computer she bats at my hand so I can't do anything. Love her soooo much!

Darla Golden: Buddy will come and put his nose under my hand and flip it. Belle will come and sit beside me and give me "the paw." Not too obvious, are they? Hey, they're Labs and they know what they want.

Mallory Cole: Our big lab Hunter will sit down and give us the stare-down for several minutes, if we're sitting on the couch without him. When we finally say something to him, he stands up, backs up, then slowly climbs on TOP of both of us (not on the unused parts of the couch). Then he fully lays across us and sighs really loud (as though he's saying it's about time we gave him permission). Our puppy Emme will just wag her tail like crazy, then jump up. She'll perch herself up on a pillow (she thinks she's a princess). If Hunter wants to play, he'll get his trusty Kong ball and drop it on us. And nudge it several times until we pick it up. :) We love our babies!

Volunteer Spotlight: James Naylor

hand and pawJames Naylor began volunteering for the Cedar Valley Humane Society in November. James is very giving with his time, coming in to the shelter three days a week to help with the cat adoption rooms. He has put in countless hours over the past two months. James, the Cedar Valley Humane Society thanks you for everything. We couldn't do fulfill our mission without dedicated volunteers like you!

Happy Tail: Yadi and Colbie

My family and I adopted Peanut (now Yadi) and Renee (now Colbie) from the shelter on October 4. The kittens have settled in Young woman with catsnicely with us, and we now can't imagine them not being with us.

After losing our beloved Noel to feline leukemia, we really missed her companionship. We never considered adopting two, but when faced with the two most adorable littermates, we couldn't split them up and I'm so glad we adopted both. Their loving and playful interactions convinced us that they couldn't have made it without the other.

Thank you, thank you for the good work you do to care for animals in need and connect them with loving homes! We are so thankful for the kind and compassionate staff and the clean conditions you keep at the shelter. Shelter animals are the way to go and we will recommend CVHS to everyone we know!

With kind regards from
The McChristy family

Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!

The indifference, callousness and contempt that so many people exhibit toward animals is evil first because it results in great suffering in animals, and second because it results in an incalculably great impoverishment of the human spirit.
