Featured Feline:
Orra
Orra the cat

Orra came to the Cedar Valley Humane Society in June. She is a sweetie who loves to be loved and will let you pet her for as long as you like! She is front-declawed and quite talkative. She doesn't mind being held, so she would do fine with kids. She would prefer to be an only cat. She can be a little reserved, so come on in and take the time to get to know her.
Compatible Canine:
Penny
Penny the dog

Penny is a shy but sweet girl who really wants to be a lap dog. She tends to be a little anxious, so her new family should not have any children under 12. She would do best in a home where there's someone home more often than not. If Penny sounds like the girl for you, stop in and meet her.

Greetings!

Happy New Year! Have you made your resolutions for 2011? Here's a possibility: Resolve this year to do whatever you can for homeless animals in Linn County. Can you bring a(nother) companion animal into your life? Adopt a shelter sweetie. Can you spare a couple of hours a week? Volunteer at the shelter. Can you donate regularly? Join our Loyal Supporters Club to set up a monthly charge to your credit card. (You may also donate now if you'd like!)  If you're already doing all you can, we thank you for your support. Have a happy and prosperous new year!

Exciting Happenings in 2011

We're excited to advance our mission in 2011! We will be out and about in the community, such as at adoption events, the Freedom Maggie and Boo at DAFestival, and Kernels games, to name a few. We'll also be hosting fundraisers, like our Whine and Wags tasting event; Putts for Pets and Drives for Lives golf outings; and Draws for Paws Hawkeye football party.

Our volunteers will continue to provide humane Astro at DAeducation programs and offer pet therapy to the residents of retirement homes. And we're gearing up for new programs, so stay tuned!

As the only open-admission non-profit animal welfare organization in Linn County, we have a unique and vital role to play in working for the humane treatment of animals. We hope that you will continue to be an active, passionate, and dedicated part of the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

We Asked, You Answered!
speech bubble

Wayne Pacelle of the HSUS takes the stance that Michael Vick deserves another chance at owning an animal. What stance do you take? What do you think of Wayne's view?

Larissa Boeck: Uh, no. He lost that right. I don't care if he's "seen the error of his ways" or not. He lost his chance.
Missa Robertson: wish we could ask the animal if he wants to go back to the human. we all know what the animal would want to say!
Jaime Daub: Absolutely not! Never again should anyone allow innocent animals to suffer by the hands of this man! To me he can never earn that trust back.
Alyssa Rosendahl: No. Besides the obvious reasons why he should not own a dog, the language Vick used to describe why he wanted a dog sounded as if he views dog ownership primarily as a way to further rehabilitate his image.

Volunteer Spotlight: Dan Meyer

hand and pawDan Meyer started volunteering with the Cedar Valley Humane Society near the end of October, helping the staff with the cats. Dan volunteers at the shelter several days each week, sometimes up to ten hours a day! Thanks, Dan, for giving so much of your time to the Cedar Valley Humane Society. We couldn't do it without you!

Happy Tail: Josie

Dear Cedar Valley Humane Society,

Thank you so much for the positive experience we had adopting our Josienew family member. You know her as Dotti; however, we renamed her Josie.

Josie has adjusted very well. She has been easy to housetrain, is very sweet and loving...and loads of fun! Josie LOVES to run around her fenced backyard. In fact, she has created her own agility course that she runs at an unbelievable speed! She also loves her babies (stuffed toys). She carries them with her everywhere and never goes in her house (kennel) at bedtime without them.

Josie has had a couple of playdates with other dogs: our neighbor's son has a Puggle who Josie loved playing with, and we took her to Camp Bow Wow yesterday. We will also be introducing her to her niece, Molly (a Fox Terrier), soon. She gets along very well with others!

Thanks again,

Bob, Wendy & Josie B.

Remember, YOU can send us your Happy Tail, too!
