Trapper John
trapper.john
Trapper John came to us in July as a stray from the streets. He was found stuck and injured in a trap, hence his name. He is poly-dactyl, which means he has extra toes. We think this makes him extra special and unique! Our veterinarians estimate Trapper John to be around 1 year of age as he seems to display the qualities found
in a younger cat. Come meet Trapper John today!

Compatible Canines:
Pumpkin and Patch
pumpkin.dog
Pumpkin and Patch are two small Terriers who were found alone and hungry as strays. We can only assume they are brother and sister based on their identical looks and strong bond. These two are clowns and will need a home that can give them the time and attention they deserve. Come make Pumpkin and Patch part of your family just in time for Halloween!

speech bubbleWe Asked, You Answered!
Why do you think cats out-number dogs in shelters about 3 to 1 in general? How can we help reduce the high volume of homeless cats?

John Braumann: There is a misconception that the aloof nature and independence of cats allow them to survive better in the wild. For some reason more people do not like cats. Those who feel animals are property, not family, turn on cats much faster than dogs. There needs to be much, much more education at all levels, especially children. Education about the number of animals that are euthanized, breeders, good pet stewardship, etc.
Karen Whiteside: Allergies, not understanding what it takes to litter train, therefore causing frustration and messes. Also as said about people having indoor/outdoor cats that aren't spayed or neutered.
Denise Gisvold: We need more awareness out there about spay/neuter programs and more communication from our local shelters would go a long way to help that. Also, more communication/events to help get these cats into forever homes which will help with the overcrowding at the shelter.

Sponsor Spotlight: Invisible Fence
A new effort, called Project Breathe™, is underway to equip every fire station in America and Canada with the equipment to give pets life-saving oxygen if they are rescued from a fire.  An estimated 40,000 to 150,000 pets die in fires each year, most succumbing to smoke inhalation. In most states, emergency responders are unequipped to deal with the crisis. The loss is terrible for the family, heart wrenching for firefighters.oxygen.mask

Invisible Fence Brand, the brand vets recommend most for dog safety and freedom, has been quietly equipping stations for over three years. This year, the company took the effort nationwide and to Canada, and called on others to help. The company has set up a website www.InvisibleFence.com/O2, where people or companies can support the effort. To date, Invisible Fence Brand has donated more than 5,000 pet oxygen masks that have been used by the fire departments to save a reported 25 pets thus far in the campaign.

In this area, recent donations by the local Invisible Fence of Cedar Rapids have been made to the Hiawatha Fire Department as well as the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.  One pet has already been saved as a result of the donations. The company is in the business of saving pets lives and strongly believes in programs that not only help keep pets safe in their yards, but safe from other hazards like house fires.

Invisible Fence Brand is dedicated to initiatives that help pets, from Project Breathe donations to local support of the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Thank you for your support, Invisible Fence!
Volunteer Spotlight: Noel Wilbur
Having Noel Wilbhand and pawur as a volunteer is like getting two for the price of one!  Noel works for Verizon who will award CVHS a $750.00 donation once Noel contributes fifty hours of volunteer time to the shelter.  Noel has helped with our adoption dogs at events such as the 5K Run, Pet-O-Ween, etc.  He also walks the dogs at the shelter in his spare time.  Noel jumped right in and rounded up a group to play at the our Drives for Lives golf tournament, too.  Noel doesn't stop at only helping our animal shelter.  He also volunteers as a little league coach.  Thank you, Noel, for everything you do for the Cedar Valley Humane Society, as well as the community in general!

If you want to volunteer or intern, just ask us how!
Happy Tail: Jack

Dear Cedar Valley Humane Society,

Randy and I were always "puppy people" when it came to getting a new dog. We only wanted female puppies, as well. But, one day this summer when Randy came to the shelter looking for a dog for our friend he ended up falling in love with Jack, a sweet male dog. Not a puppy. Not a female. jack.happytailRandy and Jack are very good pals. Jack goes with Randy to the farm every day to visit our horses. Jack follows Randy everywhere and wants to do everything with him (as you can see from the picture!).

Jack interacts well with all people and animals alike. Everyone who meets Jack cannot believe that we got him from a humane society as an adult dog. Because is so intelligent and eager to please, training him was no problem. Now we tell anyone considering adding a dog to their family to consider adopting a dog before getting a puppy.

It will be many years before we look for another dog but we will definitely be adopting again rather than buying a puppy.

Thank you again!

Randy Kay & Jack Coghlan

Remember, YOU can send us your happy tail, too!
