Boots

Boots is a young cat between ages one and two with a spunky personality. He came to us as a stray in June and hasn't lost any of his spirit. If you walk near him he will bounce around from tier to tier in his kennel trying to catch your attention. We think Boots is the equivalent to your classic class clown. He is also ready and willing to give love and affection, which makes him the perfect combination for a family companion. Meet him today!

Moses
moses
Moses is a Beagle with the saddest of stories. A local Sheriff found him abandoned in the middle of a storm in a lonely parking lot. His leg was so badly mangled by the time we took him into our care that the veterinary staff at Cedar Valley Humane Society had no choice but to amputate it. Moses has been a trooper and adjusted well to the surgery. He has a great spirit and is eager to please. A few weeks ago he was adopted out to a family. However, he was returned to the shelter-by no fault of his own-because the couple decided to proceed with a divorce. Now Moses is waiting in his kennel for a family willing to give him the lifetime of love he deserves. Help turn his tragic story into a happy ending!

breeding stock at a commercial breeding operation. The dogs ranged from three to seven years of age.  The dogs were voluntarily surrendered to the Cedar Valley Humane Society by their owner after a complaint was called in to the shelter to spark an investigation.

The staff alittlemannd volunteers at the Cedar Valley Humane Society are currently caring for the dogs who haven't been adopted yet. "After evaluating their health, we were able to determine which dogs were healthy enough to be adopted immediately," said Cedar Valley Humane Society Executive Director Zach Melton.  "At least six of the dogs had some health issues, ranging from tumors, heart murmurs, joint issues or blindness and have required some specialized care. Additionally, a network of dedicated rescue groups have helped to care for and place five of the 19 taken in," Melton said.

Heartwarming Update: Meowzer, Kitty in the City

Maybe you followed long-time shelter favorite, Meowzer on his trek from small-kennel Iowa to big city lights in Manhattan. Or, maybe you're tuning in for the first time. Either way, this update on Meowzer, our dubbed "city kitty" will warm your heart.

Meowzer held true to his name the first few days away from the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Whether taking in the scenery from inside the NY-bound Penske truck or resting up in a hotel over night, he meowed repeatedly in despair for the great change in his environment. He slept and ate very little and could not seem to get comfortable.

After Carolyn, his new companion, gave him a little time and extra TLC, Meowzer finally began to warm up. First, he started becoming comfortable enough to drink straight from her water glass. Next, he insisted on sitting on the ledge of the shower as she bathed. Below, you can see his full-out transformation in the form of pressing keys on his master's Blackberry to stretching out like a beach bum.

Like many other shelter pets, Meowzer was housed in a kennel for months on end. We do our best at the Cedar Valley Humane Society to socialize and give the necessary attention to all of our beloved animals. No matter what we do here, though, nothing compares to a life of freedom in a forever home. Be sensitive to shelter sweeties coming into new environmemeowzer.3nts, and give them time to warm up and adjust to their new settings. A little extra TLC never hurt anyone, either!

Black Dog Society Event: A Great Time for a Great Cause!Black dog society
Our first annual Black Dog Society event was a sweet success! Our volunteer certified trainer, Gary Harrington, supervised a meet-n-greet for the dogs and facilitated exciting activities for them, too. Everyone left with a goody bag full of dog toys and treats and our signature "Black Dog Coffee." Our crusade continues to raise awareness for black dogs and their overwhelming presence in shelters across the U.S.! It's not too late to join the Black Dog Society: just e-mail Sarah with your info and your dog's info.

How does your pet react to rain and storms?

Sage Skogman Roby: they love to cuddle and sleep
Brandy Ann: My cats aren't thrilled about thunder, but they handle it pretty well. No hiding under the bed or anything :-)
Amee Bee: My Golden hides in the basement :-((
Amber Haufle: My Chesapeake Bay Retriever sits at the back door whining to go out. He LOVES the rain and likes to run through all the puddles in the back yard and drink the rain water coming out of the drain spout on the side of the house!!!! Goofy boy!!!!
Elizabeth Carnicle: Gets as close as she can to mommy & hides her face when there's thunder! Doesn't mind the rain though...

hand and pawVolunteer Spotlight: Chris and Kim Diamond
Chris and Kim Diamond recently relocated from Washington D.C. to Cedar Rapids--and we're glad they did!  Full of energy, these two jumped right in at the Cedar Valley Humane Society.  They've been helping with the cat houses and dog kennels in the morning, and they attend many events as well.  When these two walk in a room, everyone else's faces light up and you can feel the positive energy.  The Diamonds have a true passion for animals.  Cedar Valley Humane Society is blessed to have them involved in our mission, and we thank them for all their hard work!

Happy Tail: Pepper
pepperRemember Pepper, a former resident of the Cedar Valley Humane Society only a couple of months ago? Her new best friend, Angie Buchhop Elm, reports on how well she is doing in her new home! She was spayed a few weeks ago and now weighs almost 12 pounds.  It took her a little while to warm up to "The Daddy" in their house, which has led them to suspect she may have been abused by a man previously.  With his patience, however, she has really come around!  She has done well house-breaking by method of crate training, and she loves going out to the barn on their property, as well as hiking on the nature trail. When she sees her pink harness, she actually tries to put it on herself!

Here is a better look at Pepper in her forever home!

Remember, YOU can send us your happy tail, too!
