Compatible Canine: Edward

Edward came to us as a stray when some kind citizens brought him in after finding him wandering on the side of the highway. We estimate he is a 9-10 month old Yellow Lab. He is a bit shy at first in his new surroundings, but once he warms up he will try to climb in your lap like a 5 lb. puppy! He loves to play fetch and has a big smile on his face when he gets to run around like the puppy he is at heart. Come meet this handsome boy, he would be the perfect addition to any family!

Kernels in the Courtyard a Success

The Cedar
Valley Humane Society and the Cedar Rapids Kernel's teamed up for a Meet &
Greet this past Thursday, the 15th. Two players, John Hellweg and Mike Kenney,
both pitchers, came out to the shelter Thursday morning to play with some dogs
and cats, and sign autographs for baseball fans and animal lovers alike. They
played fetch and wrestled with Lucca, a 4-year-old Pitt mix, and Edward, a
10-month-old yellow lab. They also took a liking to some 6-week-old kittens
just up for adoption. Both players have pets at home, and enjoyed being able to
spend some time with our animals as well as meet some loyal fans. Thank you, Cedar Rapids Kernels! |

Fourteen Dogs Taken in by Cedar Valley Humane Society
The Cedar Valley Humane Society recently assisted the Linn
County Sheriff's Department by taking custody of fourteen dogs - including 7
newborn puppies, voluntarily surrendered by their owner after the Sheriff's
Department became involved.
The staff and volunteers at the Cedar Valley Humane Society
are currently caring for the dogs; basset hounds and mixed breeds. Six of the dogs are currently available for
adoption. A volunteer foster care
family is caring for a mother and her seven puppies until the puppies are old
enough to be adopted into new, permanent homes. People who are interested in adopting a dog may come to the Cedar
Valley Humane Society shelter at 7411 Mt Vernon Rd SE in Cedar Rapids during
our regular adoption hours (Mon, Thu, Fri 11-6, Sat 10-4, and Sun 12-4) to meet
them and complete an adoption application.
"We're glad these dogs will now have a second chance at a
happy life. The owner did the right
thing by turning the dogs over for adoption after recognizing that he wasn't
able to give them the care they needed." said Cedar Valley Humane Society
Executive Director Zach Melton."Taking in this many dogs in one day from one location;
including young puppies needing extra care; in addition to the animals Cedar
Valley Humane Society normally receives each week, places an extra strain on
our resources. We're grateful for the
support of the community that allows Cedar Valley Humane Society to help these
dogs and other homeless and neglected animals in our community." Melton said.
Donations to help care for these and the other
animals are always needed. Donations of
good quality dry food, treats, blankets, paper towels, and cleaning supplies
can dropped off at Cedar Valley Humane Society at 7411 Mt Vernon Rd SE, Cedar
Rapids, IA 52403. Monetary donations
are also needed and can be dropped off, mailed to the above address, or made
online at www.cvhumane.org.

Save a Life, Foster a Pet
With summer in full swing, we are busy, busy, busy! We are in need of foster homes, especially for cats and kittens. Many kittens come to the shelter too young to be put up for adoption, and need a place to stay and grow until they are old enough to find a forever home - that's where you come in!
Fostering is a great way to help animals in need, and all it requires is some space at home, a little bit of time, and some love and attention! Cedar Valley Humane Society will provide you with everything you will need, including food, blankets, toys, and medical attention for your little sweetheart! If you're interested and able, please contact us at (319) 362-6288, or come fill out a foster application at our facility.

Happy Tail Sherie Moose shared with us the story of her new companion, Lily: "It has been six months since we adopted Lily from the Humane Society. She has been such a joy. And continues to make us proud. Her favorite game to play is frisbee. She also enjoys "herding" the neighborhood children. She runs in and around them as they run and play and try to catch her. This last winter Lily went skiing with me. She loves the snow and stays right in my tracks. When I fall, which I do often, she comes to my rescue. She has been so easy to train. In fact I feel we have done very little to train her. It just comes natural to her. I think she knows how much we love her. She just wants to be part of the family.Thank you again for allowing us to adopt this beautiful dog. We support you and all the wonderful work you all do."
Remember, YOU can send us your happy tail, too! |
We Asked, You Answered! "What is your pet's funniest quirk?"
Karen Pelletier: Scooter the beagle will lay outside in the sun in 110 degree weather until she nearly dies of heat stroke and then proceed to come into the house and lay right on top of the air conditioning vent in the kitchen floor ... wait 10 minutes then flip to cool the other side! :)Patrick Albrecht: Cheeseburger, our Golden Retriever, watches Dogs 101 on Animal Planet, and barks and growls at the screen when the other dogs run towards the screen. He almost leapt right into the TV one afternoon. Mounted it on the wall the next day.
Tune in next time for more responses to give you a chuckle!
