Compatible Canine: Max
Black Dog Max
Max is an 8 month old lab mix who came to us when his previous family had to give him up. He is a happy, go-lucky, typical "lab" like puppy with lots of energy and love to give! He would rather be running out in the yard with his squeaky toys in tow than most things. If you're looking for a companion or a family pet, come see if Max could be your perfect match!

US Bank Corridor Non-profit Organizations Fair a Success!

nonprofitfairkernels

Cedar Valley Humane Society joined other local non-profits for a night at the Kernel's Stadium dedicated to bringing awareness to the different organizations. Two kittens and a long time canine resident of the shelter were available for meet and greet and received much love and attention. Thank you to all who stopped by to learn more about the shelter and for everyone who donated to help the animals!

In the Know: Black Dog and Cat Syndrome
Black kittiesYou might know that Labrador Retrievers are the most popular dog in the US. But, did you know that black Labrador Retrievers are consistently the most prevalent dog in animal shelters across the country?

Black Dog and Cat Syndrome is defined as "the low adoption and high owner surrender rate of black dogs and cats in shelters. Black dogs and cats are often the last to be adopted from shelters."

Those in animal welfare have hypothesized that people may consider them too "plain", think they are menacing, or simply don't notice them because their dark color makes them disappear in their kennels.
BlaineSo, the next time you're checking out available dogs or cats on the Web or walking through the adoption areas at Cedar Valley Humane Society, think twice before skimming over the critters who may be swallowed up in the shadows. Let's work together to bring all homeless pets into the light to find homes.

Volunteer Spotlight: Pam Benesthand and paw
Pam Benest has been a wonderful volunteer
for the Cedar Valley Humane Society for years.  Pam facilitates pet therapy, takes dogs to Wal-Mart on a monthly basis, and jumps in at events when help is needed.  Furthermore, she is always there in a pinch, when needed.  She has substituted for other volunteers when they are unable to make their pet therapy appointments.  Pam has done other odds and ends last minute as well.  Thanks, Pam, for always being there when needed and helping with all of our pet services that help get our pets socialized and find forever homes!

Happy Tail
Sammi (Carfrae Kitten)The Carfrae Family spotted their soon-to-be kitten at the "Until They All Find a Home" tasting event at Daniel Arthur's and knew he was to be theirs. Holly Carfrae was excited to share that in his new home, "Little Sammy the kitten trucks around with our toddler Charli all day. In her baby crib, baby car seat, baby stroller, grocery cart.. everywhere! He just loves the girls! He purrs all day long and is very frisky and playful. It's great because my kids are too! we just love him!!" The Carfrae family found their perfect fit, and you can too. We have many other kittens at the shelter waiting to begin their Happy Tail.
"The dog represents all that is best in man."
