Heritage Conservancy's 3rd Annual Barley Sheaf Benefit Dinner

On Sunday, May 20th at The Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm in New Hope, PA, we held our Third Annual Barley Sheaf Benefit Dinner. Now a signature bed and breakfast and gourmet restaurant in Bucks County, the farm was originally constructed in 1740, and sits on over thirty acres of rolling hills and agricultural fields. This special event was courtesy of Christine and Noel Figueroa, owners of The Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm. 100% of proceeds benefitted our mission of protecting open space for future generations to enjoy.
Gracious hosts Christine & Noel Figueroa with their children.
"As a mother of four young children, Heritage Conservancy's mission is especially close to my heart," said Christine Figueroa, owner of The Inn at Barley Sheaf Farm and Heritage Conservancy board member. "For over fifty years, this organization has been protecting and caring for the land and history we want our children to experience and enjoy. It is truly a pleasure to host this annual event."

Guests at the event enjoyed mouthwatering local food served in an elegant, outdoor setting. Guests bid on four items during a live auction, including two vacation homes, and were then invited to purchase "Buses for Bristol." In total, our supporters funded 11.5 school buses that were used to transport students from Bristol Borough Middle School and Neil Armstrong Middle School to the Bristol Marsh for educational programming on May 22nd to 25th at the Bristol Marsh Preserve.

Connecting Kids to Nature in the Bristol Marsh

We've been working as a local partner with The Nature Conservancy and Bristol Borough to promote the ecological restoration and stewardship of the Bristol Marsh Preserve, located in Bristol Borough in Bucks County, PA. The Preserve lies along the main stem of the Delaware River and includes a freshwater tidal marsh, a special type of wetland habitat found in coastal areas, but rare in Pennsylvania.

We held our second annual "Future Stewards of the Bristol Marsh" educational field trip program from May 22nd to 25th at the Bristol Marsh Preserve, where nearly 200 students from Bristol Borough Middle School and Neil Armstrong Middle School were in attendance. Working with 7th grade science teachers and educators from the Silver Lake Nature Center and Bucks County Conservation District, the program combined in-class presentations and field trips that touched on topics like tidal and non-tidal marshes, invasive plants, and different ways plants and animals adapt in a wetland area. We are grateful to our funding partners including the PA DEP Coastal Zone Management Program, TD Charitable Foundation and The Schiel Family Foundation.

"This is a unique opportunity for students to learn about different ecosystems," said Susan Myerov, Senior Planner at Heritage Conservancy. "Through direct connection with nature, we hope the kids will learn to appreciate this great natural resource in their own community!"

Thomas Hebel of Bucks Country Gardens Honored at
Our Annual Business Member Reception

We held our annual Business Member Reception on Thursday, April 19th at our headquarters in historic Aldie Mansion in Doylestown, PA, where Mr. Thomas Hebel of Bucks Country Gardens was presented the 2012 Business Leader Conservation Award.

With attendees that included many of our valued business members, as well as U.S. Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick and members of our staff and Board of Directors, the event showcased Mr. Hebel's significant and profound contributions to conservation. Founder of Bucks Country Gardens, the company encompasses many facets of environmentally sustainable business practices, including recycling drop boxes on the property for used planters, and holding informational seminars on using native plants to create natural wildlife habitats. In 2011, Mr. Hebel cut the ribbon to Bucks Country Garden's own one-acre solar field, which produces enough energy to help run the facility.

"Bucks Country Gardens is a fine example of a local business that is committed to green business practices," said Linda Cacossa, Heritage Conservancy's Chief Operating Officer. "As a long standing business member and supporter of Heritage Conservancy, we are pleased to recognize Mr. Thomas Hebel with this award."

The reception also honored the many business members who continue to promote our mission through their advocacy and generosity. For more information and to become a business member, click HERE or contact Maggie Uliano at (215) 345-7020 x 107.

Herons of the Quakertown Swamp

Located in Upper Bucks County, PA, Quakertown Swamp is a 518-acre wetland, which is recognized as significant by the Pennsylvania Natural Diversity Inventory because it is a haven for a variety of wildlife species, including beaver and waterfowl. The area has been listed as a first priority site in the Bucks County Natural Areas Inventory (NAI) and is categorized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an all important wetland area. More than 74 bird species nest in the swamp. In fact, it is home to what may be the largest Great Blue Heron rookery in eastern Pennsylvania.

On Saturday, April 14th we held our annual Heron Walk Event, where experts from Bucks County Audubon Society and Heritage Conservancy presented an informative program about the lives and habits of Quakertown Swamp's great blue herons and the importance of protecting their vital wetland habitat. Attendees enjoyed a slide program followed by a visit to a heron rookery on a preserved property in Upper Bucks County, where they had the rare opportunity to observe these magnificent birds and their young as they nest in the Quakertown Swamp.
