Five Favorite Decorating Tips
Have you ever watched a decorating show and wondered what
a designer would say if he/she came into
your home to work with you? The
decorating shows can be pretty intimidating.
Sometimes they really make the homeowner look like - well, they can't
decorate! But with just a few insider
tips, you might be surprised at what you can do!
Tip #1 - Start Over..
I know, I know, this sounds like a biggie, but the best way to see the
possibilities that a room has is by taking everything out and starting
over. But if that seems too
overwhelming, start small.
Remove all of the accessories on a shelf and re-place and
re-do them - it will feel totally refreshed!
Tip #2 - Get Rid of "Stuff." "Stuff" is another great way to
date a room - so many of us just push something over and add another piece, and
soon your room isn't decorated as much as it is a place where stuff goes. So when you remove your things to start over
- don't use them all!
Tip #3 - Lighting, Lighting, Lighting! Almost without fail - virtually every home I
work in does not have enough lighting.
Mood lighting isn't just for bedrooms and low lighting - it is not easy
to stay upbeat, cheerful and enthusiastic when you are straining to see what
you are working on or doing. So go ahead
- add a lamp - or two!

Tip #4 - Update Your Fabrics. Your furniture might be perfectly fine, but
since it makes up the majority of the feel of a room, your fabric plays a major
role. If it looks or feels dated, there
is a quick fix - slipcovers! Fresh throw pillows, or just a throw can freshen up your look.
Wow, what a difference the little things will make.
Tip #5 - Don't Forget Your Windows! - Yes, sometimes a
window shouldn't be dressed - when it is so architecturally inspiring on its
own or if you are a minimalist in the truest sense of the word - otherwise,
those windows are naked! Get some fabric
up there, softening the room and making it all the more inviting.
Take a look around your room and put some of these
tips to use - and don't forget you can always call me if you need some help - I
promise not to be like those designers on tv!
