Greetings!
Do you matter? I know, what a silly question! Of course the answer is a resounding, "yes!" - right? As Jamie Thurber and I prepare for the 2010 What's Next?! Workshop series, I'm increasingly aware of how brilliant and courageous it is when people behave as if they matter. Imagine taking the time to give yourself what you need. To make yourself a priority, carving out time for exploring who you are, allowing what you want, and accepting support in your journey. When Bunny Duhl co-facilitated the Emotional Re-Education Workshop, she lead the group with a very simple statement, "I'm here for me, and I'm here for you." The phrase has carried on, long after Bunny's retirement as a facilitator. Amazingly, this statement flies in the face of what many of us learned. Maybe you heard it from your mom, "Don't be selfish - Think of someone else first." If you are a person of faith, you may have learned to "Put God above all else." As a member of the military, protecting the safety and integrity of the unit matters most. So, why, then would anyone ever utter the phrase, "I'm here for me, and I'm here for you?" My personal truth is this: I cannot be present for someone else, if I am not present for myself first. I liken it to the plane safety instructions, "place the oxygen mask on yourself first, and then help the person seated next to you." So, I ask, do you matter enough to come first? If you're a parent, it may feel quite difficult to imagine putting your own needs and wants before that of your child. But what happens when you don't get enough sleep? Or if you've gotten the kids fed, homework done, bathed, and into bed, and you still haven't eaten dinner? I don't know about you, but I know I get cranky when I'm tired and hungry! Jamie ducks when hunger strikes me during a meeting, because, as he says, "we've entered the cartoon world" and I view him like a nice roasted chicken! Without my most basic needs met, I am miserable. My clipped speech and unforgiving manner are telltale signs that I haven't heeded the "here for me, here for you" creed. Consciousness Collaborative member, Lysa Wilkins, considers her time with Cini (her horse friend - pictured above) to be some of the most important time of her day. I know this because she rides Cini at 5:30 every morning - before she does anything else - even throughout the winter! For Lysa, the relationship between horse and human fuels the soul. In this way, Lysa shows up for herself first, and then extends her energetic warmth and enthusiasm to people in her life. Consider what matters most to you. What do you feel nourishes your life force? Allow yourself to notice where that, which energizes you, falls on your priority list. If writing feeds you, start your day with it! If painting fills you with a sense of joy, don't let the laundry, the errands, and raking the leaves keep you from your own passion. And if you find yourself struggling with being first, allow support, discover why it's hard, and create an opening for something new. Because when you show up for yourself first, there is no sense of deprivation. Your fullness then extends freely to others, supporting them, as it has supported you. My Wisest Guide: Intuition
Inner-knowing is what I have come to live by. It serves me well. Professionally, I work with intuition for others' discernment. There is a feeling to it, a quality that let's me know when I am "out of my mind" which, in this case, is a good thing. This "no-thought" state of being allows information to flow as unfiltered as possible.
We are born with different degrees and expressions of intuition, and our lives are enhanced the more connected we are to our core and this flow of information. Developing this innate guidance system has been one of the most supportive, influential acts of my life; and I love to teach what I have learned from my experiences. Many peoples' lives have been touched with intuition in remarkable, healing, beneficial ways.
It is not easy to describe this "knowing." That instantaneous, no-thought, moment where words flow and something in the other person visibly shifts.
Tears come as I write this and connect to the beauty of this gift we have all been given. How beautiful that we can use this guidance for ourselves and, when appropriate, others.
Michael was a recent caller in my CoachingNow(tm) group (download to listen). Upon hearing his name I felt the words "Real Estate" in bold, capital letters, above his head. I greeted him with "Why am I getting real estate all around you?" "Oh my goodness," he gasped.
Every cell in my body, in vibrational resonance with his inner truth, knew that he innately made the right decision for himself when, in spite of criticism, he chose a career in real estate. In my minds eye, I began to see people standing up, one by one, lining up around his innovative ideas and new ways of doing commercial real estate. I could see by the dollar signs that were in the picture by now, how highly impacted peoples lives would be, so positively and profitably.
After I shared what I intuitively saw, heard, and felt, Michael put forth a resounding, knowing, "Yes!" The 'yes' in recognition of his own truth that he heard in the words that flowed from inner knowing, which he had given me permission to share. Now I can only imagine the inspired changes he is implementing with his team. Despite the economy, and his critics, Michael is putting his heart into co-creating a real estate environment guided by his own intuition.
In these unsure yet wondrous times what I want for all of us is to be: · connected to our core, allowing presence to lead; · clear in our values that we compassionately live; and · willing to share our lives and gifts from the deep knowing that we are here for each other.
Now, more than ever, we need to listen to the inner authority: our wisest guide, intuition.

Did you know that just two teaspoons of sugar can decrease the effectiveness of your T-cells (white blood cells that fight infection) by 50%, and that the effect can last for four hours? The more sugar you eat, the more compromised the T-cells, and the longer the impact. And, of course, it's that time of year again. From that leftover bag of Halloween candy you might have sitting on your counter, to the apple crisp and pumpkin pie to come, it's no wonder we all start to get sick around this time of year. Don't be fooled by the marketing geniuses who package all of those brightly colored, crinkly wrapped, foods. Sugar suppresses the immune system, providing a ripe opportunity for viruses to attack. Excess sugar contributes to obesity, hyperactivity, diabetes, and more. So, how do you avoid standing out as the bad guy? It's easy to feel trapped. You know you don't want to spend your hard-earned money on foods that put you and your family at risk for disease and discomfort. But, if you say no, you all might feel deprived and left out. So what's a concerned parent to do? There are many healthy and delicious alternatives to those wrapped in cellophane. This month, I offer a quick, easy, and sweet treat that suits the holiday mood, and may also be fun to make as a fast family project (click here for recipe). Afterall, who doesn't like to get their hands covered with something gooey and delicious? For more recipes and ideas for happy parents and healthy kids, contact Nathalie here. |

Meditation and the Real World
When I began meditating each day, I started with ten minutes and soft music; it felt like a vitamin I was supposed to take, and I didn't like it. Now it is a gift, and in the toughest times, a dear friend. This past week I had a medical scare and experienced a few, very frightening yet abundantly revealing, days while I wondered if cancer was a possibility. I'm relieved to share that all is well, but when the doctor told me of her concerns and the testing required, I began an immediate night of research on the web, engaged in heartfelt talks with my wife and good friends, and reviewed what is important to me. It's amazing, a threat to a life I so take for granted, became a gift. I learned: I want to see my kids grow up. I like where my relationship is going with my wife. I am very jazzed about supporting people in their growth. And meditation is key for me to keep returning to the grounded, open-hearted essence of who I am. I sit for a half hour to an hour each morning, and lately have been drawn to Osho's " Four Levels of Relaxing" meditation. As he states, ". . . it helps build a loving connection, to create a rapport between yourself and your bodymind." In it, he suggests relaxing first the body, then next the mind; if the body listens, then the mind will also. Next, relax the heart and the emotions, and once these three steps are complete, relax the whole being. Over this past week, I found through each step, I could feel the stress I had built up through my entire system, and was able to let go, in that moment, of the tight clenching that permeated my being. During the day, when things became heated, I was able to stop myself, breathe, and remember the peacefulness that is more our natural state. I could then feel my emotions, allow them, and not lose me in the process. Because meditation has been such a gift to me, once a month, I share this gift by leading meditations in Arlington, MA. I would welcome your presence, whether you have never tried meditating before or you've practiced for years. The next two meditation dates are: November 18th & December 16th from 7:30 - 8:30 PM.
Please email me if you are interested in attending.

They Say It's Your Birthday

Hoping for something special this year to celebrate your birthday? The Consciousness Collaborative founder, Joanne Lutz, celebrates a birthday this month, and rather than receiving gifts, she's giving them!
"I'm not a birthday person... well, that's not true, I really enjoy other people's birthdays! So, I decided to think about how to make the most of mine and I came up with...as they say, a gift that keeps on giving..."
To mark Joanne's 42nd year, if you are among the first 42 people to respond to this offer, you will receive a complimentary one-hour phone coaching session with Joanne - during YOUR birthday month between November 2009 and October 2010.
"It's really the best of both worlds for me. I've found a way to celebrate my birthday, by helping you to celebrate yours!"
Simply complete this form and if you are among the first 42 responses, Joanne will contact you to arrange a time to "meet" on the phone. For further details, visit the News & Special Offers page.

Meditation of the Month
 Dance, Dance, Dance
For me, there's nothing better to get out of my head and into my body than dancing. My husband and I have a deal that we take turns making dinner...and while what I prepare is generally edible, cooking is not my thing. The best part for me is blasting my iPod and dancing around the kitchen while I'm getting things ready. Sometimes the cats (I have four), run for cover, but other times they'll leap on my shoulders and dance along. It feeds me in a way that dinner never can.
For Parenting Consultant, Beth Sutton, early morning dancing on the beach is her version of Lysa's early morning ride with Cini. Regardless of the weather, she'll drive in the dark for 45 minutes to a favorite beach where she'll pop her headphones on and dance to the music of her teens while the sun rises, the waves crash, and the wind blows (even if it's blowing snow at her!). This is refueling time.
This month, I encourage you to allow music to fill your body and express it in dance. Wherever you listen to music, allow it to seep in and notice the sensations in your body. You might notice that your foot starts tapping or your head bobs up and down, perhaps a bit of sway takes over and...was that spin? This is not about how you look or even how long you dance, it's just about allowing yourself to be fully in tune...with the music, your spirit, your physicality, with all of you.
