woman aging gracefully

Join Consciousness Collaborative member, Dawn Lipinski, founder of Bodypeace, for a one day workshop to explore the many meanings of change during "the menopausal years."  Through movement, supportive discussion, humor, and shared experiences you will learn "traditional" and "alternative" approaches for achieving a sense of balance and well being, during this important life transition.

Dawn explains, "Our goal for the day will be to create a space for consciously living our lives and experiencing ourselves as healthy, harmonious, juicy, vibrant, loving women - before, during, and after our menopausal journey.  The methods offered will include a combination of western medical wisdom and homeopathic remedies, designed to support the whole of you.  I encourage women of any age to accept this invitation to share your experiences and curiosity about this challenging transition - with the intention of energizing your mind, body, and spirit."

FoodFocus
Food Focus: Oats
rolled oats

Oats are probably one of the world's most popular grains.  Half the farmland in Ireland and one-third in Scotland is devoted to growing them.  They are one the top sources of soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol levels, and may be purchased as the whole grain, "oat groats," or in one of many processed forms.  So many options!

Oatmeal: Whole grain oats that have been stripped of their outer coats. Some varieties are steamed and rolled flat before being thinly sliced. Others, like Scotch and Irish oats, are just sliced with thin steel blades.

Rolled Oats: There are three varieties of rolled oats: instant, quick-cooking, or 10-minute oats.  The quicker the cooking time, the more processed they are.  Go for the longer cooking ones!

Steel-Cut Oats: Firmer and nuttier than rolled oats, steel-cut oats make a creamier oatmeal but require a longer cooking time, up to 40 minutes.  Steel-cut oats have a lower glycemic index than rolled oats.

Oat Bran: The outer coating is often added to baked goods or cereal for additional fiber and nutrients.

Oat Flour: Flour made from husked oats can often be highly refined.  But most varieties are richer in fiber than white flour. Small amounts can be used to thicken sauces or in baked goods.

Oat Groats: Whole-oat kernels must be simmered for 30-45 minutes.  The nutty-flavored groats can also be toasted and added to baked goods.

Emotional Re-Education Workshop

This weekend retreat of self discovery and connection, lead by April Prita Manganiello,  provides a safe environment to explore old emotional hurts, decisions, and beliefs - cutting through the stuck places that inhibit your ability to live fully in yourself and to give and receive love.  "It is a process of recognizing, releasing, and re-framing," explains Prita.  "I am always touched and honored by the work people do in this space."

Many members of The Consciousness Collaborative contribute to this retreat through co-facilitation and support of the participants.  For further information about the Emotional Re-Education Workshop visit the Classes & Events page or complete the on-line application to participate.

curse of knowledge

Greetings!

How do you explain a puzzle when you take for granted the pieces that create it?  In Made to Stick, authors Dan and Chip Heath refer to this predicament as the "Curse of Knowledge."

Consider your area of expertise.  If you're a dentist, root canals and crowns make up your language of impact.  It likely doesn't occur to you that a patient may have no idea what those procedures involve.  If you're a real estate agent, and a home inspector finds radon or termites, you have experiential knowledge about what those conditions imply and the steps required to resolve the issues.  A new home buyer may have heard these terms, just as the dental patient had, but until it became personal, they held no real interest or meaning.

When I started an internship as a funeral director, my job description was "do whatever they tell you."  Okay, but what are they saying???  "Park the hearse at the point."  Do you know what that means?  I didn't.  The funeral home was located in Kenmore Square, positioned between Commonwealth Avenue and Beacon Street, where the streets meet - "the point."  Ah....easy when someone tells you, not so easy when you're a new, diligent employee and you wonder how you went through two years of school and missed "the point!"

The Consciousness Collaborative is currently faced with it's own curse of knowledge.  A defining criteria for membership is the ability to "be present" with each client and engage in "personal growth work" to foster this "presence."  Parenting Consultant, Beth Sutton calls this "in-house" language.  She's absolutely right!  Teasing apart the meaning of this shorthand, enables the public to understand how we are different - special - and uniquely talented.  I mentioned presence and personal growth work.  For fun, I'll break down the latter.

Personal growth work - the process of learning about one's "personal beliefs" - noticing where they came from, when they were learned, and asking if those beliefs still fit now?

Personal beliefs - the assumptions one makes about oneself and the way things are

For example, I used to believe that "eventually everyone gets dentures - someday I'll have them, too."

I thought this to be true because my grandmother always had them...she was old, and I figured that must be what happens to everyone eventually.  When I was about three, I remember seeing those fake teeth sitting in a murky glass of water and wondering when I'd be able to take my teeth out.  Combined with a lack of dental interest in my family (light on check-ups and cleanings), I had no other information to contradict my belief.

Does this belief still fit now?  No!  I've learned that dentures make it harder to eat, and impact the taste of food (which I remember my grandmother complaining about - although I never put it together with her teeth), and those are just the inconveniences.  I've learned of a raft of other implications that inspire me to reach for the floss a little more often.

Does this seem unimportant?  I'll admit,  I didn't choose the juiciest of examples, but the process is the same.  What are your assumptions about money, love, and success?  Exploring your own beliefs, noticing how they impact your life, and then becoming empowered to choose differently - if the shoe no longer fits - that's "personal growth work."

Consider multipying this one long diatribe by an entire "in-house" vocabulary.  Whew!  We've got our work cut out for us.  I'll tell you, though, we're dedicated to breaking down the concepts of "consciousness" into bite-sized pieces - not because you're not incredibly smart (we know you are!), but because if we don't explain the parts, you too, might miss "the point!"

With simplicity,

Effective Communication for
Comprehensive Care Dentistry
October 16th & 30th

Adrian Wilkins formalThe Consciousness Collaborative member, Adrian Wilkins of Wilkins Consulting will be leading a powerful workshop this fall - designed for dentists with a comprehensive care focus, who recognize the need for effective communication in achieving their goals.

"Most of the doctors I meet want to help people, they want a profession that affords them a better than average income, is challenging, and provides a valuable service to the world.  Almost all of them have invested thousands of hours and thousands of dollars above and beyond dental school to become better clinicians in an effort to provide the best comprehensive care dentistry possible to their patients.

These same dentists, however, often tell me of the challenges they face finding qualified candidates for comprehensive care treatment.  Further when they do find them it is often difficult to convey the value of this kind of dentistry to their patients.  Frustration sets in when they have worked hard at becoming the best dentist possible and then find themselves not having the opportunity to practice what they have learned.  This frustration typically results either in pushing patients who often do not accept treatment, or resigning themselves to a career of single tooth
dentistry.  More new patients, is not the answer!  As a practice consultant I see practices attempt to market themselves to success and not create the result they are striving to achieve.

Dr. Ratti HandaThe most successful and effective dentists I know are the ones who have learned how to communicate effectively, and the foundation of their practice rests on existing patients and internal referrals.

There is a solution and it is not high pressure sales!  This workshop provides a sound philosophical and practical foundation for the dentist who wants to practice better comprehensive care dentistry without driving away patients.  Utilizing the tools, systems, concepts, and techniques taught in this workshop you will foster positive relationships with patients who accept treatment, and just as importantly, with patients who do not accept treatment.

In a safe interactive coaching environment we will explore these tried and proven methods to allow the patients who will benefit from comprehensive care to accept treatment; and at the same time maintain a healthy patient base while satisfying the needs of all of your patients.  Learn how to communicate with patients and
manage your practice in a way that allows you to perform the type of dentistry you have trained for."

Adrian Wilkins is an international coach and consultant who has been working with dental practices for over ten years.  In addition to serving his local New England clients with a focus on Case Presentation and Treatment Planning for the general dentist interested in comprehensive care dentistry, he recently, presented to over 700 dentists on the subject of Practice Management at the 10th International Dental Conference of Yerevan, sponsored by ADA/AIDA.

For more information about this workshop or about Adrian Wilkins, visit the Classes & Events page.  This two-day workshop, will be co-facilitated by Dr. Ratti Handa, DMD and The Consciousness Collaborative founder, Joanne Lutz.

Satisfying Your Sweet Tooth

No willpower when it comes to sweets?  You are not alone!  We all crave sweet foods.  Here's why: our tongues have a large amount of sweet taste buds, and they demand to be satisfied.  So how can we satisfy a sweet tooth without resorting to Ding Dongs, Twinkies, or our old pals Ben and Jerry?

One strategy that works beautifully for my clients is adding naturally sweet foods to their diets every day.  Sweet taste buds become less demanding when they know they're getting their daily fix!  What are naturally sweet foods?  Fruit, certainly.  And root veggies like sweet potatoes and squashes.  But here's a surprise sweet food....grains!  Yep, whole grains.  The longer you chew whole grains, the sweeter they taste.  And that makes your taste buds very happy!

How else can we tame the sweet monster?  After you've added sweet foods to your daily diet, look for ways to add sweetness to your life.  We often settle for sweet foods when what we really want is a hug, a nap, a walk, or a laugh with a good friend.  This is particularly true at night.  If you find your sweet tooth consistently talking to you around 10pm, it may be rearing its head to cover up feelings of loneliness or anxiety.  Or it may become a habit to help you relax, or to reward yourself after a hard day.  The next time your 10pm craving hits, ask yourself what you really, truly need.  Then do your best to give it to yourself, and watch that sweet craving fade away!

To satisfy your sweet tooth with this month's food focus - oats - try this healthy, yummy recipe...

cat about to break out of the box
Breaking Out
of the Box

Once again I turn to Osho for meditative guidance.  This time, I share with you his notion of "breaking out of the box."

The idea is to boggle your mind!  Alter your response to a familiar feeling with an unexpected action.

In Osho's, Meditation for Busy People he suggests the following:

"For example, if you are feeling angry just take a few deep breaths.  Inhale deeply and exhale deeply, just for two minutes, and then see where your anger is.  You confuse the mind: it cannot correlate the two. 'Since when,' the mind starts asking, 'did anyone ever breathe deeply with anger?  What is going on?'

So do anything, but never repeat it; that's the point...Just go on puzzling the mind every time.  Be innovative, be imaginative.

Your partner says something and you feel angry.  Usually when this happens, you want to hit him or throw something at him.  This time, change: go and hug him!  Give him a big kiss and puzzle him as well!  Your mind will be puzzled and he will be puzzled.  Suddenly things are no longer the same.  Then you will see that the mind is a mechanism; that with the new, it is simply at a loss; it cannot cope with the new.

Open up the window and let a new breeze blow through."

The intention with all meditations is to allow you to connect with yourself.  To do this effectively often requires that the mind be distracted from it's familiar patterns and ways of being.  This meditation provides you with an opportunity to continually challenge yourself and allow space for the rich connection we all desire - the one with ourselves.
