Morrison Child and Family Services

Greetings!

Since 2004, the Parent Mentor Program has provided peer mentoring to parents impacted by addiction who are involved in the DHS-Child Welfare System. Parents in the program are matched with a Mentor who has faced and conquered similar challenges

Program Spotlight

Parent Mentor

Parent Mentor NeCola Henderson was recently featured in an article in The Oregonian.

The Parent Mentor program was created in 2004 with the goal of reducing the length of time children remain in foster care because of parental substance abuse and to help parents successfully complete treatment and be reunited with their children.

What is a parent mentor?

  • A parent who has also experienced challenges in his/her parenting and has successfully navigated the DHS system.
  • A parent who can empathize and support parents entering treatment, maintaining sobriety and reuniting with their children.
  • A parent who is familiar with many roads to recovery and who can support parents through all stages of recovery.

How do parent mentors support parents?

  • Accompany parents to court hearings, Family Decision Meetings and Team Decision Meetings.
  • Maintain contact with parents during treatment or incarceration.
  • Introduce parents to 12 step meetings or any other recovery based meetings.
  • Assist parents with access to community resources.
  • Guide parents through the stress of parenting in recovery.
  • Help parents learn to advocate for themselves and their children.
  • Provide encouragement and support throughout the length of the parent's involvement with the child welfare system.
