 A Word About Unity

 Unity

We sometimes have conflicts with others in our ministries, communities, families, prayer chaplain Programs, workplaces, and in life.

As Rev. Lei Lanni and I (Jeri) just returned from our Unity People's Convention in Detroit we observed the places where we experience conflict - yes I said the word conflict - within our Unity movement.  Sometimes conflict and sometimes just disagreement about how we should be governed; whether we should contribute tithes or pay dues to the national organization, Unity Worldwide Ministries, that supports us; how we should be held accountable; and even how we should pray.

We talk about wanting Unity within Unity and yet the conflicts and disagreements we experience in our own communities, churches, and within our national movement, might make this goal feel hard to reach.

And then I came across this daily video message by John Maxwell on the word "Unity."  He expresses that conflicts and disagreements are part of life and in fact, make us stronger.  He expresses that as a leader he doesn't strive to have unity of the head, but that it is essential to have unity of the heart.  And I would add that with unity of heart, we can find our way to an understanding within our conflicts of the head that help move us forward in a unified direction.

I hope you enjoy this message as much as I did and will pass it along!

Let It Go, Let It Go, Let It Go!

What if in this very moment you could be free of past resentments, hurts, anger, or judgements?  What if you could reflect on a situation that had previously been very painful and instead of pain you feel love and understanding?

This is possible for us when we practice forgiveness.  And like any "practice," we have to work at it.  I'm not talking about the forgiveness that is situational - you know the kind you are willing to give because the hurt just wasn't that big and it's relatively easy?  I'm talking about the forgiveness we give when the pain and hurt is big and we forgive anyway.

In her book Building Your Field of Dreams, Mary Manin Morrissey says "Through forgiveness you find the power to build lasting dreams.  Without forgiveness, the negative emotions you carry leak toxic energy into every area of your life, stunting or entirely choking out your dreams.  Forgiveness is a process requiring great willingness and commitment if you are to be released from the bondage of your past."

What a powerful statement -  that forgiveness is not just nice but a necessity for us to keep moving in a forward direction.  To live the greatness we were created to live, we need to clear the way.  Mary gives us a process which I would like to share with you.

1.  "Learn to separate the being from the behavior.  You may never forgive some terrible act perpetrated upon you, but you can learn to forgive the perpetrator."  - This step gives us the freedom to detach, if you will, the action taken from the Child of God acting.  And it becomes possible for us to see the spark of divinity that is inherently within each one of us no matter what human condition may be appearing.

2.  "Recognize that you don't know the whole story."  Regardless of what we think we know about what is motivating another's behavior, WE DON'T KNOW THE WHOLE STORY.  Instead of creating the story in our head that slants toward the negative, what if we give the benefit of the doubt.  "From this greater perspective, the petty acts of an unhappy individual do not have to damage you."

3.  "Ask for help in removing the poison of resentment."  Include the process of forgiveness in your daily prayer life, meditations, and what a great opportunity to invite someone to join you in prayer.  Prayer partners can be a wonderful support for us in our practice of forgiveness.  "Forgiving is done with your entire heart.  Begin each day by asking the Holy Spirit, "What should I forgive?"

Dear friends, forgiveness is something we talk about a lot but can be tough to practice.  I am not proposing something to you that I have not struggled with myself.  And yet, I have experienced the incredible sense of freedom and release of creative energy that has washed over me when I have forgiven with my whole heart - even those things that seem unforgivable.

You, see "forgiving" is not about or for the person who has hurt us, it is about freeing ourselves from the bonds that hold us - it is about empowering ourselves.  This freedom and empowerment is not achieved overnight - it is achieved by willingness, commitment, and practice.  Say "yes" today to be willing to be willing to forgive with your whole heart!

Leadership

Calling all Learners!

"The illiterate of the future are not those who cannot read and write, but those that cannot learn, unlearn, and re-learn."  - Alvin Toffler

Organizational learning has become a buzzword in many organizations and communities as we strive to be "learning organizations."  As a result, we have popularized terms like experiential learning, action learning, collaborative learning, participatory learning, etc.  But what - if anything unites each of these approaches and what does "learning actually mean?

The aspiration to learn something implies that there is something desirable to do or understand that is not within our capability of doing or understanding.  In other words, the very desire to learn presupposes a gap between aspiration (what you desire to do) and ability (what you actually can do."  Therefore, the simplest definition of learning is "the process of closing the gap between our aspiration and our ability."

So, if we agree that learning is about filling in our knowledge gaps in order to do something new or to do the same things better, then how do we do that?  There are two fundamentally different approaches to increasing our capabilities and I believe we need to intentionally engage in both.

The first approach, acquired learning, occurs through training and experience that imparts new knowledge and skills.  Most organizational training and development programs are geared to deliver this type of learning.  Psychologists refer to acquired learning as "horizontal development" because it broadens our existing knowledge base and skill set and increases our ability to successfully execute tasks.  Acquired learning tends to be the type of learning we engage in most often because it is relatively easy and most readily available in the world around us.

The second approach, adaptive learning, is new to many of us.  Adaptive learning in a sense upgrades our "operating system" similarly to when we upgrade our computer's operating system, for example, from Windows 98 to Windows XP.  The new system includes the capabilities of the previous system (same data and applications), but transcends the old one by opening the door for additional, more expansive, capabilities that were simply impossible with the older system.

Research coming out of leading institutions, including Harvard University, indicates that human beings do have operating systems - referred to meaning-making systems.  These "Meaning-making systems," are essentially, a set of fundamental assumptions, beliefs, and ways of interpreting experience.  Our meaning-making systems come in different versions of increasing complexity and capability.

Barring a life crisis of some kind, developmental researchers have found that few adults ever upgrade their meaning-making systems.  We may successfully engage the horizontal acquisition of new skills and knowledge (acquired learning), becoming better at what we do, but we tend not to deliberately engage in the vertical adaption of new perspectives and capacities (adaptive learning) that might fundamentally shift how and why we do what we do.

Unlike acquired learning, which simply adds new knowledge and skill to an existing meaning-making system without changing any of the underlying fundamental assumptions or beliefs, adaptive learning transforms and expands the mind itself by helping it evolve to the next level of complexity.  Adaptive learning can cause us to feel out of sorts, disoriented, and uncomfortable, similar to how we in new thought might describe chemicalization, which is no wonder why few of us ever engage in this growth unless we literally have no other choice.

What I am suggesting is that we don't have to be limited to a life of acquired learning where the breadth of our knowledge gets wider and wider along with our ability to more successfully perform tasks.  While this type of learning is important, it limits us and most certainly needs to be balanced with adaptive learning which allows us to expand and deepen the way we make meaning out of life and step into the expression of greatness that we were all created to express.  With a Learner attitude, acquired learning is relatively easy, and adaptive learning - given sufficient time and effort - is well within reach.  However, with a Knower attitude, acquired learning is more difficult, and adaptive learning can be unlikely or even impossible.

I'd like to leave you with a quote from Jack Welch, former GE CEO, who said "Keep learning.  Don't be arrogant by assuming that you know it all, that you have a monopoly on the truth.  Always assume that you can learn something from someone else."

In loving service to you,

Jeri
