The Power Of Our Words

Reflecting on the beauty of the flowers in May, I am reminded of the words of the Prophet Isaiah.  "For as the rain and snow come down from heaven, and return not thither but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and prosper in the thing for which I sent it."  (Isaiah 55,10-11).  The relationship between the power of the seed and the power of the word creates a meaningful metaphor for exploration.

Flowers can serve as a gentle reminder to each one of us that power resides in every seed just as it does in the very words we speak.  Like the petals of a flower, our words can create beauty that bless and enhance our life.  Words can also be limiting, lack-filled, misdirected, and represent less than who we are.

However, we have a choice.  As we read in the scripture from Isaiah, our words do go forth to accomplish that which we purpose.  We have the ability to form words into affirmations, which become living words, words of life, words of power.  Words we speak, either silently or out-loud, are alive and are life-giving.

I invite you to create a mental "pause button" that gives you the opportunity to think about the words you speak.  Imagine a world where we all come together and speak one truth, "what power would be released if thousands could be united in speaking one thought!...When we come together in the Spirit, we are all one in the true place of the Most High.  Our words become charged with great healing power."  (How to Let God Help You, by Myrtle Fillmore)

This idea was the basis that Silent Unity prayer was built on and continues today.  As we open up and begin the practice of being aware of our words, speaking only words of faith and truth become as natural as a planted seed unfolding.  May you too see the beauty springing forth in the flowers and in your very words!

Leadership

Are You a Learner or a Knower?

"Learning is almost synonymous with life itself.  The learning process is the process by which we grow and transform ourselves from who we are to who we want to be."  David Kolb

A key factor in our success as a leader is our attitude toward learning and the attitude we cultivate and reward within our teams about learning.

Let's begin with us!  Are we learners - do we embrace the learning gap with the attitude of a "learner" a willingness to admit that we don't know, approach new situations with an open mind and a sense of ease and enjoyment as we learn new ways of understanding and doing things.  Or conversely,  do we approach the learning gap with the attitude of a "knower" - a closed mind, assuming that we already have the answers.   As knowers we don't want to risk exposing our learning gap and we strive to preserve the appearance of competence.

Although we can think of Knowers and Learners as two distinct types of people in reality, most people hold an attitude toward learning that falls somewhere on the continuum between the two extremes and people's attitudes toward learning vary with different circumstances, learning contexts, and even the feedback they receive in a given learning situation.

Like most of our characteristics that are deeply imbedded, research suggests that people who have a predominant Knower attitude were often praised as children for being smart or getting the right answer rather than for their willingness to make an effort and persevere with a difficult task or problem. Therefore, as adults Knowers have a sense that their very identity and self-worth are on the line every time they are attempting a task at which they might not quickly succeed.

People who adopt a Learner attitude tend to equate effort with improvement and assume that, in time, they will learn to succeed at the tasks with which they currently struggle.  Therefore, they view "doing badly" - and the inevitable frustration that comes with it - as normal and to be expected.  Learners don't regard setbacks as failures but as the inevitable twists and turns along the path to increased ability.

The important thing for us as leaders is to create an awareness around these two attitudes towards learning both for ourselves and others.  As  we create an awareness for ourselves and begin to observe our own reactions/thought processes in the situations we encounter, we can choose to transform our attitude from being a Knower to a Learner.  As John Maxwell says in The 360 Degree Leader, "Becoming a good leader is a lifelong learning process."

This awareness also applies to the culture we create within our teams around learning opportunities - the ones that we create and the ones that are naturally created as part of life's experiences.  Allowing members of our team to struggle and work to resolve their own problems rather than swooping in and rescuing creates natural learning.  Accepting mistakes as learning opportunities and facilitating healthy feedback rather than striving for perfection, encourages our team members to embrace an attitude of a Learner and creates a safe space for learning to occur.

Next month we will explore two kinds of learning - acquired learning and adaptive learning.  Both of these are important aspects of and important to our overall growth and development.

Until next time...choose learning!

In loving service to you and your ongoing development,

Jeri
