Volunteering

The 3 R's of Volunteer Management
Recruitment
As you may already know, the 3 R's of Volunteer Management stand for - Recruitment, Retention, and Recognition.  These three aspects of managing our volunteer programs are crucial to our success.  Without them, volunteers won't come, they won't stay, and they won't come back.

February is the month to talk about retention.  Retention is not a task that you can perform, it is rather a result that you achieve.  If you recruit honestly, if your volunteers feel loved and appreciated, if they feel empowered and their work is meaningful, they will stay.

The Prayer Chaplain Program is specifically designed to retain your Prayer Chaplains if you follow the program.  If you train your Prayer Chaplains well so that they feel equipped, if you establish and maintain boundaries and guidelines that ensure everyone is treated equally, and if you continue to nurture and feed them with ongoing training your Prayer Chaplains will be happy, your program will be healthy, and your Prayer Chaplains will stay in service for as long as their life and schedules accommodate their service.

If you lead, others will follow and continue to follow.

Bentley
"And they called it puppy love...."

For the past several months, my husband, JB, and I have been raising our new little puppy.  His name is Bentley.  Don't let this face fool you.  Yes, he is a little angel and when he is awake.... That's a story for another time.

Having this little guy in our home has reminded me of some very important rules to live by and I'd like to share them with you.

1.  This very moment is all there is.

Bentley is fully present with every activity whether it is fetching a ball, playing with his favorite toy, sleeping or eating.  Life is full of moments.  And sometimes what we're experiencing has nothing to do with what's going on around us, it has to do with what's going on in our heads - the worries we have, the problem we think we need to fix, the people who have hurt us.  Being present with ourselves and others in this very moment is a choice we can make moment by moment.  Being present in every moment is the only way to experience the fullness and joy that life has to offer.

2.  Fall in love with everything and everyone you see.

As I've observed Bentley greet every visitor to our home with joy and enthusiasm or play with the leaf blowing across the ground, I am reminded that  when I recognize the Truth about everyone I encounter and everything that happens to me, I too can be in love.  The Truth is that God is always present in everyone and every situation regardless of the appearance.  By seeing through what may appear as the "human condition," I can see Truth.

3. If you leave your shoes on the floor, they will get chewed.

There are times when I do the same thing over and over again expecting different results, but guess what?  If I don't like the results then I need to change what I'm doing.  If I don't want Bentley to chew my shoes, then I need to put them where he can't reach them.  So it is with us.  When we are not experiencing the fullness of what life has to offer us, we only have to look at what we're doing and then do it differently.  Am I holding on to thoughts of lack and limitation?  Do I continue negative self talk?  Do I believe the glass is half empty or half full?  Only we can make the choice to change our course and create different results.

You are a beautiful individual expression of God!  The world needs you and the special gifts only you can give.

One With You In Love and Support,

Leadership

Conscious Communication

External Presence

Communication is such an important part of everything we do.  As leaders, it is a skill that we must learn to master.  One of the side-effects of our fast-paced and often technology-driven life is that we can easily operate on "autopilot."  Can you recall times when you were not fully present with others?  Have you ever missed key information in a presentation because your mind wandered?  Have you ever driven your child to school and missed out on the opportunity to connect because your mobile phone rang and became a higher priority?

If we learn to approach our communication more consciously, our effectiveness will be dramatically enhanced.  One of the ways we communicate more consciously is by expressing external presence

Presence is a quality of alert attention that allows you to connect deeply and authentically with yourself and others.  External presence, connecting with the thoughts and feelings of others, can dramatically improve your interpersonal communication and relationships.  Presence is useful for anyone, but for leaders it is especially important. I'd like to share with you four keys to external presence.

Attentiveness - The first key to external presence is attentiveness.  Giving your full focus and attention to what the other person is saying.  It is helpful to also engage physically in the conversation using eye contact, posture, and effective breathing.  Asking clarifying questions and occasionally checking in with the speaker helps ensure that you understand.

Mutuality (Talking At vs. Talking With) - To effectively talk with people is to look for underlying values and concerns beneath what they're saying.  That means inquiring with the aim to understand what's important to the other person - what drives them to want what they want or to see things the way they see.

Emotional Resonance - Being attuned to how other people are feeling - is a primary driver of external presence.  The key to emotional resonance is empathy.  The ability to sense what others feel without their saying so - we sense it through their tone of voice, facial expression, or other nonverbal signals.  Empathy is the ability to sense and correctly interpret these subtle forms of communication.  In the Prayer Chaplain Program, we refer to this as "being in our hearts."

Authenticity - The last key to external presence is authenticity.  In fact, authenticity - or lack thereof - is a primary way that people evaluate presence in others.  Authenticity is the foundation on which external presence rests.  Cultivating authenticity begins with the self-awareness that comes from frequent introspection and the "emotional intelligence" capacity to recognize thoughts and feelings in each moment as they arise.

Communication is such an important component in how we build relationships with others and ultimately create the influence needed to effectively lead.  Consider how practicing conscious communication and specifically external presence may enhance your level of effectiveness and deepen your connection with those you lead.

In Loving Service,

Jeri
