The 3 R's of Volunteer Management
As you may already know, the 3 R's of Volunteer Management stand for - Recruitment, Retention, and Recognition. These three aspects of managing our volunteer programs are crucial to our success. Without them, volunteers won't come, they won't stay, and they won't come back.
January is the month to talk about recruitment. Many of us have set New Year's resolutions and are thinking about what we may want to do to expand ourselves and give back. But it's up to you to make sure that members of your congregation have opportunities to hear and learn about the Prayer Chaplain Program.
Some ideas for "getting the word out" include:
- Have your PCP brochures available before and after service;
- Announce the PCP orientation dates from the platform;
- Publish an article or testimonial by a Prayer Chaplain in a newsletter or on your ministry's website.
There are so many ways to invite members of your congregation to be a part of your program, however, your strongest recruitment tool is the Program itself. Congregants who are touched by the Program - supported by their Prayer Chaplain during a wellness call, hospital visit, or praying after service - will feel called to step into this sacred service.
Happy recruiting!

2012 - Out of the Cocoon
The journey of the caterpillar making its transformation into a butterfly is all about transformation and becoming more of what it is destined to be. While this transformation is demonstrated so clearly in nature, it also has a deep spiritual meaning for us. Unlike the caterpillar that takes his journey only once, I believe this same transformational journey is happening for us continuously.
In conversations with God, Neale Donald Walsch says, "The purpose of life is to recreate yourself anew in the highest version of the grandest vision you ever had about yourself. Challenge your present way of thinking and move into a grander and larger experience of who you really are."
If we believe the basic premise that we are first and foremost spiritual beings living in the human experience, then the statement above would be profoundly true. We not only have the opportunity every day to be transformed, it is the reason we are here - to express more of our divinity. Our job then is to let it happen through us. In Romans 12:2 we read "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God - what is good and acceptable and perfect."
This transformation is a process and continues even as we leave our bodily form. It is not a destination that we arrive at but rather a process that we live day by day, moment by moment. And although it can sometimes be uncomfortable or even painful it can also be joyful and fun and it is as natural and constant as each breath we take or the ocean's waves lapping at the shore.
So, take a deep breath, relax, smile, and feel peace. Be transformed by the renewal of your mind day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute, moment by moment.

A Special Invitation to You!
By Jeri Royce
Last month we continued our series on conscious communication by exploring the idea of presence - specifically internal presence or mindfulness and the role it plays in creating healthy communication. My plan for this month was to continue that series with external presence.
However, I have decided to "hit the pause button" so to speak and will feature external presence and its principles in February. This month I want to extend an invitation to you to join me for the Leadership is Key webinar series beginning the first Saturday in February. This series will run for six consecutive Saturday mornings and will explore the important concepts in John Maxwell's book The 360 Degree Leader - Creating Influence from Anywhere in an Organization. You may attend any of the six webinars individually or register for the entire series.
In all the years that we have worked with Trainers and Prayer Chaplains, helped Trainers and ministers troubleshoot their programs, and delivered the Prayer Chaplain Program Trainers' Workshop, we have seen one consistent missing element - strong leadership. Prayer Chaplain Programs require strong leadership to become established in a ministry and to stay functioning in a healthy and vibrant way. And the need to be a strong leader is not limited to the Prayer Chaplain Program but is relevant to us in any role we play within our families, our relationships, our work life, our communities, and in our ministries. While being a strong leader is not always easy, the pathway to becoming a strong leader is always possible. Although we don't always express strong leadership, I believe we are inherently created with the capacity to become strong leaders!
In the first section of his book, John Maxwell says "You do not have to be held hostage to your circumstances or position. You do not have to be the CEO to lead effectively. And you can learn to make an impact through your leadership even if you report to someone who is not a good leader. What's the secret? You learn to develop your influence from wherever you are in the organization by becoming a 360-Degree Leader. You learn to lead up, lead across, and lead down. At this point, you may be saying, 'Leading in every direction - that's easier said than done!' That's true, but it's not impossible. In fact, becoming a 360-Degree Leader is within the reach of anyone who possesses average or better leadership skills and is willing to work at it. So even if you would rate yourself as only a five or six on a scale of one to ten, you can improve your leadership and develop influence with the people all around you in an organization - and you can do it from anywhere in the organization."
So, make an investment in your leadership development and plan to join me for this webinar. As you can imagine, this type of training takes a lot of resources to conduct. I've done my best to price it in a way that makes it accessible to everyone. However, it is my desire that anyone who wishes to attend is able, so please let me know if you'd like to make special arrangements regarding the registration fee. Click here for more information and to register. To participate in the webinar, you will need a computer with high-speed internet access and a telephone for the conference line. Light & Love Ministries will be hosting both the webinar and the phone conference fees.
In Loving Service,
Jeri
